My Heart
**Kael**
Despite Enrico making it clear that he doesn't agree with my past choices, I don't regret sharing this story with him. What matters right now is Sarah's well-being. While I want her back and he's my rival in the competition for her heart, everything must be transparent. Honesty is now paramount.
No more hiding secrets or telling lies. It was precisely this lack of clarity that led to all this confusion and the situation Sarah finds herself in, lying in a hospital bed with a real possibility of not walking again.
"Did you manage to talk to Rachel?" Maira asks when we're back in the waiting room.
"I was informed that she's still in Monaco. But she's not answering our calls, and honestly? Sarah is better off without her toxic presence," I clarify. "Has she been asking for her sister?"
"Not really. Sarah hasn't been asking for anyone. She's been very introspective and bitter since she woke up, and that's not a good sign, considering everything that's coming," Maira explains.
"You're right," I agree. "I'll head back to the hotel, then. I have a teleconference in an hour."
"And I need to get back to the room," Maira looked at the small watch on her wrist. "Visiting hours are ending."
We were preparing to part ways when a nurse appeared, calling for Maira and requesting her presence in Sarah's room. I immediately felt concerned wash over me, and all my other responsibilities were forgotten as I followed them down the hallway to the room where Sarah was being treated.
"You should wait here, sir," the nurse says when she realizes I've followed them as well.
Time seemed to pass slowly, and I felt restless, pacing back and forth in the hallway as if I were on the brink of insanity. Finally, after what felt like an eternity of waiting, Maira appeared in the doorway of the room, and her devastated look told me that the news was not good.
"How did she find out?" I ask, fearing the answer.
"Lorenzo let it slip," she confirms what I already suspected.
"There's no need to even ask how she's doing," I say, resigned, as I sit on the bench near the hallway entrance. "I need to see her."
Maira sits down next to me, her face revealing her sadness as she's also helpless in the face of her sister's suffering.
"If Sarah didn't want to see you before, it's even more unlikely that she'll accept now, Kael."
Despite the negativity in her words, I shared the same feeling, feeling defeated.
"The doctor had to sedate her again because her sudden movements could harm her recovery and further decrease her chances of walking again."
Hearing this devastates me even more.
"I need to be by her side now, Maira!" I exclaim, feeling restless. "I feel completely useless out here, just witnessing Sarah's suffering from a distance. All because I was a fool consumed by senseless revenge when the true culprits are no longer here to pay for their mistakes."
I covered my face with my hands, trying to contain the tumultuous emotions that overwhelmed me, but a tear escaped.
"Men cry too, Kael. When the pain is unbearable, we need to let it out somehow."
"I just need to be by her side, nothing else matters," I confess, struggling to hold back more tears, keeping the sobbing and loss of control in check.
I wiped my face with the collar of my shirt, not caring about the people passing by, including the nurse who informed us that Maira needed to return to Sarah's room.
"I would at least like to see her, Maira."
"I think you should go back to the hotel, brother," Maira suggested with sorrow.
Despite my reluctance, I accepted Maira's advice, feeling extremely powerless. Fortunately, Maira continued to keep me informed, and when Sarah finally woke up after the medication wore off, she let me know.
Maira: She doesn't want to talk to anyone.
Maira: She doesn't even say thank you.
Kael: Does she seem sad? Upset?
Kael: Angry maybe?
Maira: I'd say she's angry.
Kael: Angry at someone?
Maira: Angry at the universe.
While Maira tends to exaggerate, I clearly understood what she meant about the universe, and it wasn't fair to judge Sarah. The possibility of her being truly paralyzed exists, and anyone in her situation would probably react the same way.
After another sleepless night, instead of attempting to deal with business matters in Seattle, I was already back at the hospital, even though I couldn't enter Sarah's room. Nothing could stop me from waiting in the waiting room, and Maira would eventually come out to update me on Sarah's mood for the day. It was better than nothing.
"Why are you here again?" Maira asked immediately, even before greeting me. "You look terrible, Kael. You need to rest!"
"Thanks for the concern, dear sister," I sarcastically thanked. "But you don't seem to be doing well either."
Despite my attempt to lighten the mood, she didn't smile.
"I was about to call you. However, you were quicker than I thought."
"What do you mean by that?" I inquired, raising an eyebrow.
"Sarah just told me she wants to see you."
Maira's words took me completely by surprise, and I felt my heart race with the unexpected news.
"Well, let's go then," I called to her, quickening my pace toward the corridor. "I can't risk her changing her mind."
With my heart beating faster with anticipation and nervousness, I followed Maira down the hospital corridor. Each step seemed like an eternity as I approached the room where Sarah was staying.
