A Trap
Ryan
I still couldn't believe that Jensen Thompson was planning to escape right under our noses! He proved to be truly despicable, and his word was worthless. Although initially agreed to meet us at Mitchell in the morning, it became clear he had no intention of keeping his word.
We offered him a favorable deal where he had everything to gain by avoiding police intervention. However, it seemed Thompson preferred to complicate things. An hour before the appointed time, the investigator monitoring his every move informed us he didn't head to the company as agreed.
A few minutes later, it was clear Thompson was heading towards the airport. If that's the choice of that scoundrel, so be it. We'll grant his wish.
"He can't leave the country!" Kael exclaimed angrily. "We can't allow him to escape so easily."
"The police are already on their way," I tried to calm my brother's explosive temper. "They won't let him board that plane."
At least that's what I believed, relying on the known efficiency of the American police, which gave me hope that today wouldn't be an exception. To my relief, as we reached the runway where Thompson was already climbing the stairs of the aircraft, the police were approaching swiftly, and I promptly pointed out the criminal attempting to flee.
"Hands up, Jensen Thompson!" the sheriff announced over the loudspeaker. "You're under arrest."
Thompson's shocked look made it clear he hadn't expected us to locate him so quickly, let alone prevent his escape. We had contacted the police the day before, although we hadn't wanted to resolve the situation this way.
As the police detained Thompson, another person watched the scene as if in a trance, which was understandable. After all, Madison had made a choice and must have been feeling lost, completely disoriented. It took me a while too to believe everything that was happening in my life. It's hard to accept that we're being betrayed by the person we love.
"This isn't over!" Thompson dared to shout. "You haven't won!"
"And you haven't seen the last of us, you bastard!" Kael retorted in the same tone.
My brother was visibly upset. After all, we had all been made fools by that despicable being, and for someone like Kael, that was truly hard to swallow.
"Call our lawyers," Kael said, noticeably trying to contain his anger. "Let's meet at the police station."
With that said, Kael hurried towards the airport parking lot where Paolo, his driver, was waiting for us. But I didn't follow him immediately because there was something I needed to say to my now ex-fiancée, who stood next to the aircraft with a man at least twenty years older than her.
"I hope you don't regret the things you've done, Madison," I said, approaching her a few steps.
"Why do you say that?" she asked after swallowing hard.
I tried to smile at her obvious cluelessness, but it came out as a humorless grunt.
"Because regret that comes too late isn't worth much."
I didn't wait for a response from her, nor did I believe she had anything to say in return for my words. But it was crucial to make it clear that I wouldn't forgive her at all. What Madison did make it very clear that she lacks any character, let alone any deeper feelings for me. It was necessary to accept the reality and move forward from now on.
Even though I didn't look back, I could feel her gaze burning into my back, and something told me that she already regretted everything she had done. It was a pity because I couldn't let my guard down and give her a second chance to betray me again.

We spent the entire morning at the police station, dealing with the charges against Thompson and presenting evidence of his fraud against Sarah and Rachel, as well as the theft from my sister and me when we were newborn babies. However, on that matter, we didn't have as much concrete evidence, only the recording of what Thompson confessed the previous afternoon. He had a moment of honesty while boasting about deceiving everyone for so many years, especially our father, his brother-in-law. However, something indicated that there was still more dirt to be uncovered, but that would be revealed in due time. Now, things would be easier, as Thompson was at the mercy of justice.
After leaving the police station, Kael chose not to even briefly stop by his company. He just wanted to go home and share everything that had happened with Sarah and our mother.
Meanwhile, as peculiar as it might seem, I desired to go to Enrico's father's house and share the truth with Rachel. However, upon further reflection, I realized that perhaps I wasn't thinking about Rachel, but rather her loyal friend, Lindsay. Besides being strange, this was unsettling.
I would never confess this to anyone, but the truth is that the previous night, instead of lamenting Madison's betrayal and the fact that she chose to stay with Thompson after they were caught together, all I could think about were Lindsay's beautiful eyes and how she always seemed to face life as if nothing could truly bring her down. This contrasted greatly with my sister Rachel, who, by a strange twist of fate, became her best friend.
After last night's dinner, where I saw her in a blue dress that matched the color of her eyes, accentuating her stunning beauty even more, I couldn't get her out of my mind for a single minute. Now, I felt anxious to go to Joseph's house again and catch another glimpse of her.
So, as Paolo drove down the street where Joseph's house was located, I asked him to stop because I was getting out.
"Where are you going?" Kael asked, clearly curious, as he noticed we were in front of Rachel's current house. "Decided to visit Rachel again? Couldn't you just make a call?"
"We'll talk more later," I said with an awkward smile. "See you later."
I didn't go into details or offer any extensive explanations; I just needed to see Lindsay now. The fact that Lindsay was the one to greet me made me even happier. The day was improving with every moment.
Or at least that's what I thought until I entered the living room and found Bruno, Enrico's Brazilian pilot teammate, who, from what I could gather, was alone talking to Lindsay.
"Am I interrupting something?" I couldn't help but ask, which sounded much ruder than I intended.
However, they didn't have a chance to answer my question because, at that moment, Enrico and Rachel entered the living room. Upon seeing me standing there, she hurried over to me.
"So? How did the conversation with Thompson go?"
It seemed like I didn't have an answer, and the atmosphere in the room between the two indicated that I had almost walked into another trap.
