Lost Son

When Mary shared her story, several questions flooded my mind. Among them, what led her to seek out Maira, my twin sister, of whom I did not know until that moment? Another question was how Maira and I were separated not only from our parents but also from each other.

These questions joined others, and I hesitated to reveal to everyone that I was the other lost twin, although I was sure there would be no more suitable moment to do so. However, before making any decision, I needed to hear the rest of that crazy story, draw conclusions, and assess whether I should tell the truth to everyone, at least the part of the story I already knew, or if it was better to remain incognito, distance myself from them, and seek to live without this bond between us.

"How did you find out that your twins were alive after all this time?" I asked the question that was screaming for an answer inside my head.

"Rachel told me," Mary said once again, causing a commotion among us.

"I knew Rachel had something to do with this whole story," Kael said, clenching his fist as if consumed by anger.

"I don't understand how Rachel could know such information, considering she wasn't even born when all of this happened," I pointed out.

Kael explained who Rachel was, and only now did he realize that she was Maira's sister, which meant she was also his sister.

"What a mess!" he concluded, running his hand through his hair and tousling it all.

And he still doesn't know that I'm the other lost twin, I thought with irony.

"And how was this meeting with my sister, Rachel?" Maira asked the crucial question. "From what I understand, she didn't accept the fact that our father had an affair with you."

Mary once again showed great sadness but gathered the strength to continue and relate what happened.

"She approached me for a very serious conversation and demanded that I leave Patrick because her mother was ill, and I was causing great suffering to her family. What a joke! My mother suffered much more in this story because she missed the opportunity to raise her children."

"I told her I wouldn't separate from Patrick again because I had already done that twice," Mary recounted. "Then she said that if I distanced myself from her father, she would tell me a big secret, something about my twin children."

Although it became quite clear to me at that moment, Mary continued the story. She said she did what Rachel asked, but my sister only provided fragmented information. When her mother passed away, Rachel simply didn't reveal anything more about what she knew.

The information left an air of mystery, and I knew I needed to better understand the situation before making any decisions about telling the truth to the people involved.

"So, I hired an investigator to try to locate where my children were," Mary concluded. "But so far, I've only managed to locate Maíra."

"You distanced yourself from Patrick because of Rachel and her mother's selfishness and wickedness, because only now do I understand where she inherited all her badness from," Kael commented, agitated.

I agreed with my brother because if Guilhermina was capable of separating a mother from her children, and paying people to take them away, it showed not only a lack of character but also extreme cruelty. The situation was heart-wrenching, and I could feel anger and indignation flowing in our words.

"I know this is a tense moment, but I believe your father, my grandfather, was also involved in all of this," Maira wisely pointed out.

I had also come to the same conclusion but didn't want to bring it up.

"All the individuals involved in this scheme are no longer here, but Rachel should have known the truth for years and yet only revealed it to use as blackmail against you, Mom," Kael emphasized, appearing increasingly enraged.

"But without her, I would have never even suspected anything, and it was only after you brought her here, Kael, that I was able to truly locate Maira with the help of the investigator. She gave me the right clues!" Mary added.

Despite Mary's defense, I agreed with Kael, and even though Rachel was my sister, I wasn't sure if I could forgive her for keeping such an important secret and using it for her benefit.

"What about Sarah?" Kael suddenly asked. "Did she know about this?"

That question could change a lot, and my heart raced in my chest. Everything I thought about Sarah and whether she was like her twin sister, mean and petty, depended on the answer. Suspense hung in the air as we awaited Mary's response.

"Guilhermina told her two daughters about what she did, claiming to be very remorseful but also very afraid of what might happen to her if the truth came out."

So, Sarah knew about everything, and even though she seemed to be a fair and upright person, she chose to protect someone she loved, even in such a serious situation, especially when it involved her siblings. Discovering this deeply shook me, and I'm not sure if I can continue to treat my sister the same way now that I know she could have helped me find my true family earlier.

"Why do you seem so deeply affected now?" Mary asked Kael, and only then did I notice the sad expression on his face. "Is there something between you and Sarah?"

Kael firmly denied:

"No. I could never get involved with someone who condones something like what they did to you, separating you from your children like that," Kael replied.

Mary didn't grasp all the implicit nuances in Kael's response, but I understood the magnitude of what he was saying. From now on, there was no more Sarah and Kael. Relationships would change, and trust between them would be deeply affected. The discovery of dark secrets could change everything forever, and it was inevitable that things would never be the same between them.
