Beautiful Couple

The next day, when I descended to the lower floor, my mother and Maira were waiting for me, both seemed ready to go out, and I was puzzled by the development.

"Can I know where you two intend to go, or is it a secret?" I asked, smiling.

It was gratifying to see my mother so well, regardless of anything else. Maira was staying at our house and seemed like a centered woman, willing to build bonds with her biological mother, which was reassuring given the situation.

I knew that in cases of adoption, some people developed anger and even hatred for their biological parents, but this was a completely different situation. My mother hadn't chosen not to raise her children, nor had she felt compelled to give them up for adoption. Still, she could have developed trauma from being deprived of the truth for so many years.

"We're going to meet Ryan," Mom explained. "I want to hug my son after so long of living with him without knowing he was one of my lost babies."

"I'm here," Ryan said, entering the living room where we were gathered.

My mom was already emotional just talking about it, and when she heard Ryan's voice, tears began to flow from her eyes.

"Darling!" she said, going to him and hugging him affectionately. "I'm so happy to know you're my son."

I was sure that my mother's words were not just a way of saying she was happy to have found him, but rather that it was "him," Ryan, her son. Despite being reluctant to admit it, I had always had great affection for my assistant since the moment I met him in my company and chose him as my assistant.

"Me too, Mom," Ryan said, and it was clear that he was also emotionally affected.

Maira, on the other hand, seemed eager for the moment to hug her twin brother even more, and she did so once my mother stepped back a bit from Ryan.

Even I was touched by the emotional moment and genuinely happy to know that Ryan was part of our family. However, I was still upset for the same reason: he had several opportunities to tell the truth before and chose to withhold it from all of us, his own family.

I knew I needed to find a way to deal with this mix of emotions because Ryan's presence in my life was something I valued, but the betrayal I felt due to his omission also hurt me. It was a complicated dilemma that would require time to resolve.

"Where 's Rachel?" I asked Ryan after we were all seated and chatting.

"I left her at my apartment not long ago," he explained. "I thought it would be best, after all, she's my sister, and we need her to help us in the coming days."

Despite not being entirely satisfied with the discovery, it was a truth we needed to deal with from now on. Maira, surprised by the situation, asked if Rachel was helping with the investigation.

"Let's say she is," I replied vaguely.

I preferred not to reveal how much I was paying Rachel to assist in the investigation because my mother probably wouldn't approve of my actions.

"We hope to find out as soon as possible everything that happened that day and how we were stolen and handed over to other people," Ryan said, appearing quite affected by the situation.

"I know you won't all agree with me, but I'm still going to say it," Mary said, looking quite determined. "The most important thing I already have, which is you three here with me, is my children. Wouldn't it be better to put all this aside and move on with our lives?"

A silence filled the room after her words, and everyone seemed to be pondering the proposal. I wasn't willing to give up on the investigation because I believed that those involved should be held accountable for their actions. However, to please my mother and maintain peace in the family, I considered keeping the investigation a secret, at least for now.

"I need answers, Mom," Ryan said. "I can't live without knowing everything about what happened to me and my sister and why we were denied the right to grow up with our true family."

"I need those answers too," Maira agreed with her twin brother.

Mom sighed, resigned to the situation, and then said, "Alright then. If that's what you want, I hope we can now clarify everything as quickly as possible."

We wasted no more time and proceeded with our initial plan. That same afternoon, Ryan and I met Rachel at the storage unit where she kept her belongings, searching for personal items that belonged to Guilhermina Graham. Rachel carried a suitcase with her mother's belongings as we walked toward the exit of the storage unit, with Ryan and me following closely behind. When we reached the identification counter, Rachel placed the key on it.

The man in charge of access control to the facility, who had been engrossed in watching TV since we arrived almost an hour ago, remained inattentive, unaware of our approach or Rachel's outstretched hand, ready to return the key.

"Hey, pay attention to your job!" Rachel snapped rudely.

"I'm sorry, miss," he apologized, flustered. "I didn't see you there."

"Of course, watching TV during working hours."

She then glanced at the TV, pointing at it, and her expression changed drastically, catching my attention as well to see what was being broadcast.

"What a circus is this!?" she suddenly exclaimed, looking genuinely outraged.

On the TV, Sarah and Enrico Bianchi had just exchanged a kiss, in what appeared to be a moment of celebration for his victory in the race in question.

The scene was being replayed over and over, as if they were narrating something about it, in the sensationalist style used by gossip media.

"They make a cute couple, don't they?" The man looked more closely at Rachel. "You look a lot like the pilot's girlfriend. Is she your sister?"

Rachel stared at the TV, her expression a mixture of various emotions.

"No, she's not my sister. And this is just ridiculous. They're turning everything into a spectacle."

Rachel was right. A grand spectacle for everyone to see. However, it was difficult to control the anger at seeing Sarah moving on so quickly. Even more difficult to accept that she was with Enrico Bianchi again after what happened at the London nightclub.
