Declarations
Kael
I was already opening the car door when I heard my name being called and turned towards the voice, which I recognized as Sarah's. I closed the door again, seeking a modicum of privacy, and waited for her to come to where I was.
Given the situation, where emotions were running high within me and the tension between us, following the situation involving the Formula One driver - or maybe I should say the two drivers - I considered Ryan's interruption very welcome. I wasn't sure if I could control my temper at this moment.
"We were just coming out of a meeting when my boss decided he needed to make an important visit," Ryan explained, taking the opportunity to tease me.
"So you can go on your way, and your boss will stay here," Sarah said decisively. "We have a lot to talk about!"
I looked at her in surprise at her attitude, but it was Ryan who commented on it.
"I like girls who are so determined!" he congratulated her.
Sarah smiled upon hearing what he said and hooked her hand onto my arm, which was slightly bent as my hand was in my pocket.
"So, Kael, can I go?" Another provocation from my assistant.
"Yes," I agreed. "I need to have a very important conversation with Sarah, and when necessary, I'll call a taxi to get back to the hotel."
I sincerely hoped it wouldn't be necessary later that night because I needed to return to the United States the following day, right after lunch, and this was my last chance to clarify things between Sarah and me.
"Alright, boss!" Ryan agreed, making a salute-like gesture as if responding to some higher authority.
"Off you go!" I dismissed him once again, somewhat exasperated by his childish behavior.
He agreed and, after giving Sarah one more hug, got into the car muttering something I couldn't quite understand. I looked at her with a question in my eyes.
"What did he say?"
"Something about you being worse than a dictator," Sarah replied with a beautiful and surprising smile.
"When we get back to Seattle, I'll show him what it's like to have a dictator as a boss!" I threatened, watching the car drive away.
"Now, after seeing you two together, I realize that you like Ryan a lot," Sarah commented, looking at me analytically. "You seem to have a great relationship."
"You're mistaken," I denied. "He's just a good employee."
At least, that's what I always told myself when I thought about it. Of course, I genuinely liked Ryan, but I preferred to keep that from spreading like wildfire.
"If you say so," she accepted.
I decided to return to the topic that mattered at that moment.
"What do you think about taking a taxi to a hotel?" I suggested. "We can have dinner and talk more."
"I just need a few minutes before we go."
I didn't like the idea of Sarah going back into the apartment, as Fiori hadn't left yet. But that was soon resolved because as we were about to walk to the building's door, Hillary and Fiori came out together, looking surprised to see us on the sidewalk.
"You're still here," Sarah's friend commented with admiration. "We're going out for some drinks..."
Hillary seemed uncomfortable with the situation, and I deduced that she was unsure about inviting us to join them, perhaps just out of politeness. But Sarah anticipated it, seemingly realizing the same as I did.
"Have fun!" She wished us with apparent sincerity. Hillary thanked her, while Fiori didn't even acknowledge us, staying at a certain distance and then opening the car door for her to get in.
\---
The conversation between Sarah and me wasn't easy; there were several question marks, and I had many secrets to keep. Surely Sarah wouldn't be happy to find out that I had collaborated in Patrick's bankruptcy. Still, I want her by my side, and I hope everything that happened stays in the past and doesn't come back to affect our lives. Something difficult when you have someone like Rachel around, I thought with dismay.
"So, Fiori believes he's in love with you and broke up with Rachel," I commented when we were having coffee after a full dinner.
"I also believed I was attracted to him," Sarah made a point of repeating.
The confession irritated me, and instinctively, I pointed out something I suspected had happened earlier.
"I believe now he'll jump into bed with Hillary since yours is already occupied."
"I don't like the way you put things, Kael," she agreed.
"But looking at the other side of the story, Rachel also jumped from Fiori's bed to Bianchi's, her biggest rival, who, by the way, was also her sister's boyfriend. Maybe he was just trying to get back at her."
I didn't like to remember that Sarah was dating another man, but what Rachel did once again proved her selfishness and how little she cared about other people's feelings, not even when that "other" was her sister.
"And her sister jumped right into your bed, didn't she, Kael?" Sarah pointed out, surprising me with the way she said that.
"It's completely different!"
"It's the same, Kael," she protested. "None of us can judge the other. We're all in the same situation."
I looked at her, reluctantly agreeing, but at that moment, I realized we were wasting time arguing about things that didn't matter when we could be simply enjoying our time together. Or rather, I was wasting precious time when I could be convincing her of my feelings and that the best thing to do was to be together. In Seattle, of course.
Her stance had become defensive now, and I sighed, trying to calm down a bit and get rid of any thoughts that weren't just about us, which was the most important thing.
"Why are we fighting about other people?" I asked.
She seemed to think for a moment, and I believe by her expression, she must have reached the same conclusion as me.
"Because we're both idiots, Kael."
I held her hand gently, admiring how beautiful she was and feeling my whole body tingle with just that simple touch.
"We can be very happy together, Sarah," I said. "We just need to keep all the other people out of our relationship."
"I don't want to live a relationship separate from everyone else, Kael," she said. "I want it all!"
Once again, that topic, and if I were to dwell on what she was saying, we would argue once again.
"I just need time, Sarah. And you'll have everything you want."
"You'll have all the time you need," she granted, and I almost sighed with relief, but then she concluded, "You in Seattle, and me in London."
I didn't feel secure leaving Sarah so far away from me. That's the only truth, and I need to admit it, at least to myself. The distance is also painful. Not being able to be with her whenever I want is not easy for me.
"And what about Bianchi?"
"Enrico is an amazing person and a great friend, but I realized that what I feel for him is not the same as what I feel for you. I was confused, but now I have clarity about my feelings."
"And if he comes back and says he still wants you? That he made a mistake getting involved with Rachel?"
"Believe me, Kael," Sarah spoke with great conviction in her voice. "There's nothing between Enrico and me anymore. And you shouldn't worry about Lorenzo either."
I pondered those words for a moment, and they brought immense relief to me.
"I love you, Sarah. And I'm willing to make this happen."
"I love you too, Kael. My heart belongs to you, and only you."
