eeling the Same Pain
Sarah
We received a call from Ryan that morning, informing us of the results of Rachel's ultrasound. I still couldn't believe that Rachel had lost one of her babies. It was very painful news, and it was hard to accept that someone, especially Rachel, had to go through such a devastating tragedy.
"I know you're trying to hide how much this affects you, Sarah, but it's clear to anyone who sees you now that you're struggling with this news," Kael commented, gently holding my hand.
"Is it that obvious?" I tried to joke, forcing a smile.
"Yes, it's evident to all of us," Kael agreed, climbing onto the bed wearing just white briefs and embracing me affectionately. "But there's something very important I want to tell you, my love."
Although Kael usually managed to divert my attention from problems or unpleasant things in our lives, prioritizing my full recovery, that night he wouldn't be able to do so. The situation was too painful to be ignored, even with his nearly naked body next to mine, as attractive as my fiancé is.
"And what would that important thing be?"
"You don't have to be strong all the time, Sarah," Kael whispered in my ear and kissed my neck provocatively. "We all have our weaknesses, and what Rachel did says more about her than about you, my love. I've made terrible mistakes in the past too, of which I'm deeply ashamed today."
"Regardless of what she's done, these are my nephews, and the loss of one of them is affecting me deeply," I confessed, wiping tears from my eyes with the back of my hand. "And I can't even imagine what Rachel is going through."
As reluctant as I was to admit it, Kael was right about what he had just mentioned. I was grieving the loss of my twin sister's baby, but I was pretending to be strong so that no one would see that, beneath all the anger I felt towards Rachel, there still existed the strong and powerful fraternal feeling that had always led me to forgive her for her antics since we were just children.
Our family had extensively discussed the situation, from the tragedy of my father's death in a car accident to how to handle Rachel. The biggest question looming was whether we should try to help Rachel in any way, and if so, how, without falling into another one of her traps.
"It's understandable that you feel this way. You're a good person who has always tried to help everyone, even those who didn't deserve your kindness," Kael observed wisely. "However, we must also consider that everyone deserves a second chance, just as you, with your extreme kindness, did for me. Perhaps it's time to unite our family like never before. Let's set aside the investigation into our siblings' kidnapping; they are already with us, and I believe the culprit is no longer among us."
I turned in Kael's arms and faced him directly, lying on his body, trying to understand this complex man.
"Why are you looking at me like that?" Kael asked with a smile, and for the first time, I saw him embarrassed under my attentive gaze. "Did I say something foolish? Stupid?"
"No, you're not being foolish," I corrected, smiling. "I just found it surprising that the powerful Kael Graham has finally understood that revenge and malice never bring anything good into our lives."
"No, they really didn't bring us anything good, and I don't believe they will now," he agreed, embracing me tightly again, our bodies fully touching. "I'm so glad we're on the same page, without bitterness or resentment towards what happened to us. However, I admit I still have some unanswered questions that bother me..."
"Like what, for example?" I asked, noticing the curiosity in his voice.
"It's not important, something that wouldn't change anything for me," I tried to steer away from the topic, regretting touching on something so delicate for us. "It would be better to leave that for another time. Today I'm feeling very vulnerable with the loss of my nephew, and it won't be productive to address this now."
I felt Kael tense under my body, and his breathing indicated he was about to insist on the matter, but he quickly backed off. This made me feel insecure and suspicious, leading to yet another question.
"I'd love to hear all the 'nonsense' that goes through that beautiful and fragrant little head of yours," Kael said, trying to lighten the mood again. "But you're right, this isn't the appropriate moment."
Since Rachel had been hospitalized the previous day, I had been pondering a lot about my father. This had been occurring frequently ever since I overheard a whispered conversation between Ryan and Kael in the library. Approaching the slightly ajar door, I sensed an air of secrecy between my brother and Kael as they discussed Patrick Mitchell.
"So, you think Mitchell didn't spend that money because he didn't know of its existence, is that it?" Kael asked in a low tone, but I could clearly understand.
"Exactly," Ryan confirmed. "And the investigators found out that someone has been moving funds from Guilhermina, which should be under Rachel's and Sarah's control as the rightful heirs."
"And did the investigator manage to find out who's behind this?"
"We still don't have names," Ryan said with evident frustration. "But it's someone within Mitchell, with access to all the family's personal documents, allowing them to cover up the story and keep my sisters away from the money that rightfully belongs to them."
"From what you're telling me, though, something is quite clear."
"What's that?" Ryan asked with the same anticipation I felt at that moment.
"The family lawyer is deeply involved in this dirty scheme!"
Dr. Gonçalves!? Of course, he must be involved in the 'theft' of our money. However, I couldn't continue listening as I felt someone approaching down the corridor. I decided to announce my arrival, taking a few silent and uncertain steps back before walking noisily towards the door and knocking on it.
"Hello, gentlemen," I greeted the two men, trying to stay calm and disguise that I had overheard part of their conversation. "What are you discussing? May I know?"
Kael quickly recovered from the surprise of my sudden arrival, but his smile didn't reach his eyes as he responded to my question.
"Unpleasant matters involving a lot of money, things you really wouldn't want to know..."
Though he didn't tell me the truth, Kael's words carried a high degree of sincerity, which raised another question in my mind.
"And when will I be able to learn about this unpleasant matter?"
"Soon, sister," Ryan replied, stepping in. "Very soon we'll have a conversation about several important matters. For now, the most important thing is for you to fully recover, isn't it, Kael?"
"You're more important than anything else, Sarah," Kael agreed, with a serious expression on his face.
It was impossible to be upset with them, as they made it clear they just needed time to reveal the truth behind their conversation. Although I was quite curious, my biggest concern at that moment was Rachel's baby, so I decided to put the matter aside. However, this "other moment" seemed to be postponed once again, as my mind wasn't in a condition to deal with thefts, inheritances, and bad people. I just needed some time to process everything.
