Agonizing Wait

**Ryan**

When I left Kael talking to Sarah in front of her house, I imagined they would finally make amends, and that made me really happy. Despite not agreeing with my brother's actions, now that he seemed to have come to his senses and understood that he loved Sarah, I was quite optimistic that things were getting back on track. But now we were returning to Seattle, and Sarah wasn't with us, and that, in itself, said a lot.

"Damn!" Kael suddenly exclaimed.

We had just disembarked from the plane and were waiting for our luggage. Kael was focused on his phone, apparently reading some messages. His expression showed great irritation, and his stress level seemed to have reached an alarming point, something visible with a simple glance.

"What happened?" I asked, holding Madison closer to my body.

Kael was already quite irritated before, and now his stress level seemed to have reached high levels, as it was visible just by looking at him.

"My mother traveled to Houston, and the investigator completely lost her trail because he couldn't catch the same flight as her."

That information caught me completely off guard. I really didn't expect something like this.

"Houston? She didn't say anything about traveling!" I said incredulously. "Mary isn't completely well enough to take a trip like that!"

This deeply worried me, especially because just a few weeks earlier, my mother was going through an extremely difficult phase. She led an almost vegetative life, not communicating with anyone except Kael and me, becoming completely reclusive.

Furthermore, her physical condition had deteriorated as she wasn't eating properly, reaching the point where she needed constant nursing supervision to prevent any serious acts related to her mental health and depression.

This whole situation made me uneasy and fearful because I knew how delicate my mother's emotional condition was, and seeing Kael so shaken only increased my apprehension.

"How can we find out where she is?" Kael was also very worried. "What could she have gone to do in Houston!?"

"Ryan..." Madison spoke softly, catching my attention.

I looked at Madison because she must have something important to say, to interfere in our conversation, and I believe Kael thought the same because his attention was fully on my girlfriend.

"Do you know something, Madison?" Kael deduced.

Only upon hearing Kael's question did I recall that Mary had gone to the salon where Madison worked to be attended by my girlfriend.

"She mentioned that she was going to travel, to meet the only person who could help her in her quest," Madison revealed.

"And did she say what this quest was?" Kael continued with the questions.

"No," Madison denied. "But she seemed quite emotional when saying it and even a little regretful as if she had said something she didn't want to."

Now more surprised than before, I stared at Madison in complete astonishment because she never mentioned this to me.

"But what could my mother be looking for?" Kael was getting nervous. "And why can't I find these answers? I need another investigative team urgently, Ryan!"

A premonition began to form in me, suggesting that maybe I had been mistaken about Mary. Could it be possible that she had regretted putting me up for adoption and had been searching for me all these years? This idea filled me with excitement and enthusiasm.

However, I knew I couldn't let myself be swayed by conjecture alone. If Mary had indeed regretted it and was looking to find her son, she would surely have turned to the powerful Kael for help instead of facing it alone.

Her quest could be related to something else or even someone else, not necessarily me, her son. It was important not to create premature expectations and keep an open mind for any eventuality. After all, I didn't want to be disappointed if my assumptions turned out to be wrong.

"We need to get out of here, Kael," I called out, trying to bring some rationality to the moment.

While we stood there, our luggage passed by us several times, but we were immersed in our thoughts about what Mary could be doing in Houston instead of taking action to uncover the truth.

I watched Kael, and when it came to his own mother, he seemed lost, very different from the determined and arrogant man he appeared to be in business and with other people. There was something sensitive and vulnerable inside him when it came to Mary.

Furthermore, it was clear that Sarah had a strong effect on my brother, disturbing him and throwing him off balance. This led me to realize that Kael's feelings for her were much deeper than

"Let's go!" Kael agreed, grabbing his suitcase from the carousel.

Madison and I followed Kael and got into the car, heading towards the mansion. I wasn't going anywhere without making sure my mother was okay and that her "quest" didn't jeopardize her safety or well-being.

"My mother isn't answering my calls or messages, even after seeing them all," Kael complained.

"She didn't answer mine or my messages either," I shared.

We discussed and decided that if Mary didn't get in touch and wasn't back by the evening, we would take action. We would go into her room in search of any clues that would reveal the reason for this secret search and her whereabouts.

"I know my opinion won't be taken into account, but I disagree with what you intend to do," Madison made her position clear.

Despite the exhaustion of the long flight that brought us from London, the time difference meant it was still morning in Seattle, and we had plenty of time before we could attempt to enter Mary's room. Anxiety and nervousness consumed me in the face of her sudden "disappearance."

My concerns were immense, and I only hoped that my mother understood how anguished we were and would give us some news soon. Our emotions were running high, and all we wanted was to have Mary back and clarify this mysterious situation that seemed to involve all of us.

Kael kept pacing around the room while I searched for recommendations for another, more efficient investigative team than the one we had hired. Our mother was out there, and we had no idea if she was okay or why she wasn't responding, even just to reassure us about her physical and mental well-being at this moment. I prayed to the heavens that she was okay and that her quest, whatever it may be, would be satisfying.
