Turbulent Day

Rachel

I would consider Joseph's revelation to be predictable, but apparently, I was the only one who thought so, as everyone was shocked by the fact that he did a DNA test. But what's the problem with that? Honestly, I didn't understand, at least not at that moment.

"Now that I have cleared up your doubts about the paternity of your son," Joseph said cynically, addressing Dorothy, "I want you to leave my house and never come back. I will prohibit your entry and I hope you won't have to hear from security that you are not welcome here."

"This house is as much yours as it is Enrico's," Dorothy insisted. "I'm sure he won't accept you sending me away like this."

I didn't need to think long to understand why Dorothy had come to this conclusion, as just a few minutes ago Enrico had agreed to reconnect with that horrible woman. I decided to leave the room, as I did not agree at all with Enrico's behavior when his mother had already made it clear that she was not a good person.

"Where are you going?" Enrico asked, grabbing my wrist.

"I'm going back to the room," I explained, pulling away from him. "I think you need to sort some things out here."

"I'll go with you, Rachel," Lindsay said quickly.

The two of us were not eager to see how this situation would unfold. I was already tired of that woman and sincerely concerned about Enrico's closeness to her. I was also worried about which side he would choose to support. Would it be Joseph's side, who had always been there for him, even knowing he wasn't his biological father, even when he disagreed with his dream of being a Formula One driver? Or would it be his mother's side, who simply left without even thinking about the son she was leaving behind?

After throwing herself next to me on the king-size bed, Lindsay asked, "What do you think Enrico will do now?"

"I hope he sides with Joseph," I confessed, "but I have my doubts about how he will handle this delicate situation."

There was a moment of silence as Lindsay looked at me suspiciously. Sensing this, I quickly settled back on the mattress, using the pillows to support my back, and stared at her determinedly.

"What do you know that you're keeping from me?"

Lindsay avoided my gaze, but I patiently waited. Despite not having been friends for years, I trusted her friendship completely and was sure she would never keep a secret from me unless it was something that truly wasn't my responsibility. And I felt that what she was hiding concerned me.

"Why do you think I'm hiding something from you?" she asked.

"Don't try to stall for time," I complained. "You know Enrico will be here soon and you're trying to stall me."

Lindsay sighed deeply, and my heart raced in my chest, eager for what was to come next.

"Dorothy's accusation, that Joseph didn't take the paternity test just to avoid knowing if Enrico wasn't his son..." she began.

"What does that have to do with me? Because it does, doesn't it?" I interrupted, fearing the answer.

"Yes," she confirmed, confirming my fears. "Enrico was shaken by this. He believes he's not the father of your baby, but he's going to take responsibility because he loves you and prefers things to remain this way, without a definitive certainty."

Lindsay's revelation led me to reflect on the past few days and how Enrico proposed to me. I searched her words for something that could convince me she was wrong but found no evidence of error.

"This can't be real..."

Enrico intended to take paternity of my child but doesn't believe it's his. How this situation hurts.

"He loves you, Rachel," Lindsay spoke with anguish. "But I don't think it's fair for him to let you think he really believes the child is his. Please don't be angry with me. I didn't do this out of malice."

I wanted to say something. Express my admiration for her loyalty to me and make it clear that I wasn't upset with her. Understand that she wasn't acting out of malice, as she tried to justify. But I was completely devastated by this.

"Rachel..."

How could Enrico make me believe he trusted me?

"Rachel? Talk to me, please."

"I just want to be alone," I said, feeling upset. "Please."

"Okay."

After Lindsay left, I hurried to the door and locked it. Honestly, I didn't want to see or talk to anyone at that moment. I just needed to accept that my actions had undermined Enrico's trust in me, and now I was paying for everything I did. However, this awareness didn't diminish the intensity of the pain I felt.

I couldn't think logically or rationally. I could only feel it. And cry. I didn't even realize when I fell asleep, I just blacked out.

I have no idea how much time has passed, but I realized I had fallen asleep when I heard several desperate knocks on the door and someone calling my name.

“Rachel! Open this door” Enrico shouted “Please, open!”

I tried to orient myself, looking around the room and realizing it was already night. Only then did I remember everything that had happened on that tumultuous day, but I was still confused about how to deal with Enrico at that moment. I was feeling perplexed about everything.

“Rachel!” He insisted “Just answer me. I want to know if you're okay.”

I decided it was better to respond, as I started to believe Enrico could break down the door.

“I'm okay,” I said, though not very convincingly.

“Phew, you just gave me a relief now, my love” Enrico completely changed his tone of voice “Now let me in.”

This brought an extremely uncomfortable smile to my lips, as at that moment I was completely annoyed with Enrico. Nevertheless, I decided to approach the door and lean against it.

“I thought you just wanted to know if I was okay…” I ended up saying, feeling frustrated with myself too.

“That too.” Enrico quickly agreed. “Now I want to come in and see for myself if you're really okay.”

“My word should be enough.” I said dryly. “I'm not going to open the door.”

“I'm sorry, love... Open the door.”

“Why are you apologizing, Enrico?” I asked, now curious. “Did you do something wrong?”

Once again, I thought with displeasure.

“Yes, I made a mistake and you know very well what it is.” Enrico said in a tortured voice. “Lindsay told you, and I found out too.”

So, Lindsay ran to try to make amends with Enrico? I can't believe it!

“I was worried about you, Rachel” Lindsay spoke, explaining her actions afterward “It's been hours since you've been locked in this room and you didn't answer when I knocked on the door.”

“I was sleeping! I'm not…” I felt something warm trickling down my underwear and looked down in shock “My God!”

“What happened!?” Lindsay asked.

“Open the door now, Rachel!” Enrico ordered.
