Disappointments

**Sarah**

When I checked and saw that there were several missed calls on my phone, I assumed they were from my sister. I thought she was extremely worried about me and what happened on the yacht. I was completely wrong.
Upon arriving late at night at the apartment we rented to deal with the loan shark situation and the terrible auction episode, Rachel wasn't home. Not finding her in the room, I immediately took my cell phone out of my purse and presumed she had gone out for some important reason and tried to contact me without success.
Once again, I was mistaken.
All the missed calls were from an unknown number that wasn't in my contacts, and they occurred shortly after I had left home, still early in the evening.
There were no missed calls from Rachel, just a message saying she had gone out to meet a friend and might not come back home that night. I smiled without any emotion. While I was dealing with a stranger because of something she got involved in, she was out with "friends" and would spend the night away.
I remembered Rachel's tears just a few hours ago and felt betrayed. Was it all just a sham? Did she only want to get rid of the problem and left me alone to answer for something she created herself, without remorse?
I threw myself on the bed and allowed my tears to flow freely.
How could I have enjoyed the arms of that horrible man? How did he manage to lift me up and then throw me down like that? I just wanted to sleep and forget that night ever happened! I didn't want to think about Kael Graham, the yacht, and the auctions. I just wanted to erase it all from my memory.
I tried to solve the terrible situation Rachel put us in, but I failed. It was the harsh truth, and crying and throwing a fit wouldn't change anything. Starting tomorrow, I will search for a job and try to live like most people do: by working. I would accept any job to pay my rent and basic expenses.
Rachel would have to face the consequences of what she did. After all, she was the one who got involved with loan sharks and auctions. I have already lost enough, and I wouldn't let myself be swayed by her tears or pleas.
With that thought in mind, I finally managed to fall asleep.
I woke up the next day to Rachel knocking on the door of my room, which I had locked, and I was startled by the almost desperate way she called out to me.
"What happened?" I asked, opening the door, still feeling a bit groggy.
"The auction money didn't go into my account!" she said, speaking quickly and with visible distress. "The agreement was that the money would be in my account this morning! I promised the loan shark I would pay today, if not the money, at least the interest."
I looked at her with disappointment and sat on the edge of the bed, placing my face in my hands. I didn't want to have to say it, and as much as I wanted not to care about Rachel, she was my sister, my twin even, and I didn't dare to just turn my back and leave her to deal with her problems.
"Why are you like this?" she asked, sitting beside me on the bed and trying to see my face. "You didn't go through with it, and the man won't pay anymore? Is that it? Tell me!"
"I went through with it! I submitted myself to that stupid, arrogant man, yes!" I shouted, standing up from the bed and facing her directly.
"I don't understand! If what you're saying is true, then why wasn't the transfer made to my account? I saw that the money was blocked in the app... the two million!"
Rachel also stood up, staring at me with accusing eyes, and I felt once again disappointed because she was blaming me when all I did was help her.
"I'm telling the truth," I said, letting all the sadness show in my voice. "He found out that he bid on one person, but another person was with him. And he said he wouldn't pay because we tried to deceive him."
"That despicable jerk!" Rachel yelled, outraged. "He can't do that. You were a virgin, and he took the virginity he wanted. End of story."
"And what do you plan to do? File a lawsuit?" I ended up saying, with irony, the sarcasm dripping from my words.
She fell momentarily silent, probably because she didn't know what to say or do.
"I can't believe we've been cheated! This must have been someone's setup, Sarah," Rachel said as if she had just thought about it. "Someone orchestrated all of this to get me into this mess. There's no other explanation."
"But who would do such a thing? And why? It's too elaborate to have been staged, Rachel."
My sister sat down on the bed, and I thought she was about to resort to tears again, but she didn't.
"How am I going to get the loan shark's money?" she asked aloud, but I imagined it was a rhetorical question.
"Why don't you simply try to sell the apartment you bought?" I pointed out the obvious.
"You don't understand, do you, Sarah?" She looked at me angrily, and I just shrugged. "I'll never be able to repay this debt by working like some miserable nobody."
"I've lost so much in this whole ordeal," I spoke with disgust. "My stance is that you should sell the apartment, give the entire sale amount to the loan shark, and we'll figure out the rest."
Rachel quickly stood up, as if she had just had an idea, and I feared she would go even further with all this madness that had become our lives.
"I'm going to the nightclub. I'll try to find out something about that night I was there," she explained what she was thinking. "You need to come with me, Sarah."
"Well, then you'll have to figure it out on your own because I'm stepping away from this mess."
"You can't leave me alone, Sarah."
Rachel came up to me, holding onto my shoulders and staring directly into my eyes.
"We're sisters! You can't abandon me now."
"Yes, I can, and I will," I said, a treacherous tear escaping my control. "I don't want anything to do with this anymore, Rachel. Please, leave me out of it."
"I can't! I won't be able to handle it alone."
