Decisive Day

**Rachel**

I woke up very early that morning, before five o'clock, something I hated doing, but it was necessary to achieve my goal. I knew no one was going to do it for me, so after a few minutes of trying to improve my terrible morning mood, I got up, feeling unenthusiastic and wishing I could go back to bed.
To lift my spirits, I decided to spend some time on social media, catching up on the latest fashion trends and seeing what my old friends were up to, the ones who abandoned me to fend for myself. When I married Lorenzo Fiore, I would show them my success and flaunt everything I couldn't in the past few months.
I put on a sweater and a tank top, tied a small knot at the end, put on a pair of sneakers, and of course, applied waterproof mascara and lip gloss to enhance my lips. Lorenzo had told me the previous night that he usually goes for a run at this time, and I intended to pretend to do the same to create a stronger bond between us. But that wouldn't last long; once I was sure he was in my hands, I would abandon the idea of running practically at dawn.
It didn't take long for Lorenzo to knock on my door, and I put on my best smile, something quite challenging at that time of the morning, especially after the poorly slept night I had, thinking about how not to be recognized by Enrico Bianchi.
“Hi…” I greeted him, approaching for a kiss.
“Good morning, Bella” Lorenzo replied as he greeted me, smiling and pleased to see me. “I'm very happy to have your company today.”
“It's nice to be with someone who shares the same interests as us” I blatantly lied.
“Yes, that's true” Lorenzo confirmed excitedly “Hillary, for example, hates waking up early and exercising.”
The mention of Lorenzo's best friend didn't please me, but I was determined to change the subject when my phone started ringing once again. I ignored the call automatically.
“Can we start?”
“Is someone bothering you?”
Only then did I notice the evident interest in Lorenzo's eyes, and I realized I needed a plausible excuse to justify my reaction.
“It was just my sister,” I told a half-truth “We talk when I get back to the hotel.”
“You haven't told me much about your family yet.” Lorenzo commented, and his smile indicated a strong connection with his loved ones. “So you have a sister, is that right?”
“A twin sister” I answered, realizing he seemed genuinely interested in the information.
“Impressive! Two of you are too much for us, Rachel.”
Lorenzo said that while placing his hand on his chest, pretending to grimace in pain, and making me burst into laughter, which this time was quite genuine and not just to please him.
“You look really beautiful when you smile, Rachel.” He commented. “I like making you smile.”
I smiled again, this time just to please him, and we finally headed to the location where our run would take place. Meanwhile, my mind was working incessantly. I thought about the possibility of bringing Sarah to Montreal and having her impersonate me to deceive Bianchi, but that implies she also reunites with Lorenzo, which puts me in a complicated situation.
However, two hours later, I was calling Sarah and convincing her to do exactly that. As for Lorenzo, I came up with a strong argument, and Sarah will do everything I ask, as always.
While waiting for Sarah, I reflected on the decisive day that was about to come. My goal was to get Lorenzo to invite me to accompany him on his trip back home, as I wouldn't have the financial means to travel to the country where the next Formula One Grand Prix would take place. If he hadn't taken action before his trip to Italy, where he planned to visit his family, all my efforts would have been in vain, and I would need to return to Seattle and look for another foolish man who could potentially be a husband, just like Lorenzo.
The only concern that plagued me was Enrico Bianchi. If he recognized me, he might decide to spill the beans and tell Lorenzo about the night we had together after a drunken escapade. However, Sarah's arrival put me at ease, as I wouldn't have to fear Bianchi anymore. I would make him believe that the woman he got involved with was Sarah and not me.
When Sarah arrived at my hotel room, I felt immense relief and genuine happiness to see her. Only she could save me from having to face Bianchi. I couldn't explain why, but I felt threatened just by seeing him from a distance.
Tonight, it would be impossible not to be seen by Bianchi, and Sarah would be the perfect person to impersonate me, even though she didn't know that yet. I would do everything to convince her that this wouldn't harm anyone and that it was for a good cause. I knew my sister loved me, just as I loved her, but I also knew she was naive and would feel insecure about deceiving someone in this way unless I could persuade her that it was necessary and that we were acting for the greater good.
And what better cause than a woman completely in love, about to lose a great love due to a mistake from her past?
She would fall for it.
I had planned another meeting with Lorenzo, this time to simply observe his training. After my morning run, I was far from being in the mood to exercise even more. My whole body seemed to protest the unusual effort.
“You took your time” he complained, hugging me and brushing my lips with a quick kiss.
“I was waiting for my sister to arrive.”
“Oh, so she's in Montreal too?” Lorenzo expressed surprise. “You hadn't mentioned that she was coming.”
“It was a last-minute decision. Our bond is very strong.”
“That's great. She can join us at the event tonight. What do you think?”
“She'll love the invitation.”
“How about we go out at nine tonight? Is that time okay for you?”
“It's perfect.”
I took the opportunity and approached him, standing just a few inches away, hoping he understood what I wanted: a kiss.
Lorenzo caught my attention and held me by the waist, bringing our bodies even closer. However, the ensuing kiss was brief, not eliciting any reaction from me. It wasn't unpleasant, which had always been a positive sign.
We had exchanged a few kisses before, but they had always been light touches on the lips, leaving me dissatisfied in several ways. This, in turn, indicated that his interest in me might not be as deep as I hoped.
