She's Different
Enrico
Sarah joined us for lunch, and I couldn't help but admire her remarkable strength and vitality, even facing her current condition of disability. My friend surprised me in an extremely positive way, considering how challenging it is to live in a wheelchair, especially when her recovery was progressing slowly.
I was immensely happy to realize that her condition didn't stop her from pursuing her desires, even with some limitations. She had traveled to London to accomplish her own goals, whatever they may be. However, she shared with me that her main mission in London was to convince me to fire Rachel and let her deal with the consequences of her actions, which had harmed many people.
Despite Rachel's outburst of anger when she found out she had lost her virginity to me, I resisted Sarah's request, even though she was personally pressuring me to do so. Against common sense, I couldn't simply dismiss Rachel from my life as everyone seemed to wish. It was hard to be cold or rude to her, but that's exactly what I did in the days following our night together in my room, when she approached me stealthily.
Even though I knew how manipulative my father could be and how he always managed to make us feel guilty, I continued to take his side against Rachel. It was something I did deliberately to hurt her, as she had hurt me before.
I sought to spend most of my time away from home, which became easier considering all the activities I had to perform, especially knowing that Sarah was in London and still made a point of supporting me during my training before my next stage in the world circuit.
By getting to know Kael Graham and his tendency towards jealousy, I realized that Sarah had also managed to reverse that situation. After all, he had to accept that she was doing what she loved, without worrying about what others thought. She wasn't harming anyone and was finally in control of her own life, which was wonderful for her.
When Sarah invited me to dinner together, I didn't hesitate to accept the invitation, since all differences with Kael had already been resolved, and we were all civilized people.
After my training at the racing team, I went straight back to my room to shower and get ready for the dinner that would happen later. I only went to Joseph's room when I was completely ready to leave. After all, it wasn't even eight o'clock yet, so maybe he was still awake.
However, when I approached his door, I stopped before knocking, as I could hear raised voices coming from inside the room. I immediately recognized Joseph and Rachel's voices. Faced with this situation, I didn't wait for permission and simply pushed the door open. Upon entering, I found Rachel and Joseph practically pointing fingers at each other, a scene that was completely unacceptable for both.
“I can't believe you two are arguing again!” I exclaimed, adopting a paternal tone, as if I were reprimanding children.
“This unbearable girl doesn't do anything I ask” Joseph complained.
I turned my gaze to Rachel, expecting her to defend herself, but she just looked at me with clearly hurt eyes and then lowered her head, demonstrating a submissive attitude that disturbed me. This wasn't the Rachel I knew, and it definitely wasn't an attitude I appreciated.
“Aren't you going to say anything, Rachel?” I asked, trying to get her to speak up “Or is my father right?
“Joseph is right” she agreed, eyes staring at her own feet “I bought the wrong dinner for you.”
“Then go get what he told you to bring” I ordered arrogantly.
“Okay” she agreed without contest.
After Rachel left, I turned my attention to my father, channeling all my irritation towards the man who was becoming increasingly unpleasant, something he already had a certain natural skill for.
“Why do you always treat Rachel so badly?” I asked, keeping a calm tone “What's the reason for so much hostility?”
Joseph surprised me with his response:
“That girl is a threat to you, Enrico” he declared unexpectedly “She has the potential to ruin your career and leave you in a humiliating situation.”
Joseph's words didn't make sense to me, after all, he knew nothing about the true nature of our relationship - if we could even call it that. Furthermore, considering he only saw her as a household servant, his concern seemed even more incomprehensible.
“Rachel is just an employee of this house” I emphasized “And as such, she deserves all of our respect. If you're truly not satisfied with her, I can consider the possibility of relocating her to another position and finding someone more suitable for her tasks. What do you think?”
This was an opportunity for Joseph to get rid of Rachel, considering the clear lack of understanding between them. However, surprisingly, Joseph vehemently refused the change.
With this response, all I could do was allow them to resolve their issues between themselves.
“I need to go” I informed my father “I'll be dining out. If you need me, you can call me or ask Lindsay to do so. I'll keep my phone on.”
Joseph simply made a dismissive gesture, as if he were brushing me off. As I turned to leave through the door, I noticed Rachel standing in the doorway, looking at me once again with hurt eyes, something that deeply bothered me.
Despite that, I passed by her without making any kind of farewell. As much as my body longed to be close to her again, I had decided not to try anything more with Rachel. Against all odds, Joseph was right about the power she held over me.
