Anguish and Apprehension
**Ryan**
It had been quite some time since Enrico left Kael's house when I received a call from Joseph, his father, which I answered with a foreboding feeling. Especially because I knew Enrico hadn't gone straight to his father's house.
When I left my contact number with Joseph, I asked him to call me if anything happened and he needed help or support, as I would be available. Given that Enrico was in Seattle, it seemed odd, and something told me the issue wasn't about him. Answering the call confirmed my suspicions that it was a serious matter.
"Which hospital is Rachel at?" I asked, concerned.
Joseph provided the hospital's name, which coincidentally was near Kael's house, where I was at that moment.
"I'm heading there now," I informed Joseph, who said he was already on his way to the hospital as well.
I hung up the phone, apprehensive, and returned to the living room of Kael's mansion, where everyone was chatting animatedly.
"That was Joseph," I informed them, unsure of how the news would be received.
"Enrico's father?" Sarah asked, furrowing her brow. "What did he want to talk to you about?"
Looking at my entire family gathered on this unusual day, where almost everyone had spent most of their time at home, except for Kael who was still at the company, I concluded it was best to break the news all at once and hurry towards the hospital. I will deal with other issues later.
"Rachel had a fall due to a sudden illness and was rushed to the hospital," I said.
In an almost perfectly synchronized move - something I would have found funny if the situation weren't so serious - my sisters and my mother immediately stood up, hands covering their faces in a mix of shock and concern.
"How is she? And the baby?" Sarah asked.
"My God! And the baby?" Mom commented with extreme concern in her horrified voice.
"I don't have any updates yet," I replied to the inquiries about Rachel and the baby's health. "Let's go, Maíra."
I realized I wasn't being very clear or coherent, but Maíra understood perfectly what I meant and only asked me to wait while she grabbed her purse. Within minutes, she was ready for us to leave.
"Make sure to call me as soon as you hear anything!" Sarah pleaded.
It was clear how concerned she was for her twin sister, and the facade of indifference and resentment crumbled the moment she realized Rachel was in danger. Another instance was when she asked me to go to Lindsay's apartment to check on the situation there. Enrico and I arrived just in time to prevent Rachel and her friend from facing something even more serious at the hands of the thug who was threatening them.
After confirming she would notify us as soon as there was any news, Maíra and I rushed to my car, and within minutes we were at the hospital, in a designated area to await updates. Enrico, Joseph, and Lindsay were already seated there.
"Any news about Rachel and the baby?" I asked, sitting down next to Enrico.
"Nothing yet!" Enrico replied, visibly distressed.
He couldn't stay seated for long, pacing back and forth in the waiting room. Soon, a nurse arrived, inquiring about Rachel's family and confirming she was stable.
Enrico's question, however, caught me completely off guard, considering he had made it very clear earlier that day that the baby wasn't his and that he had no intention of helping Rachel in any way.
"Given the circumstances, we still cannot confirm whether the patient will be able to carry the pregnancy to term," the nurse finally said. "Miss Mitchell experienced some light bleeding, which has now been controlled. However, we need to wait a few more hours to confirm the status of the ongoing pregnancy."
Enrico looked like he might faint at any moment, extremely pale and motionless upon hearing the nurse's words. I even reached out to grasp his shoulder to ensure he wouldn't collapse then and there.
"Was this bleeding caused by the fall?" The question came from a well-dressed, handsome man whose presence in the waiting room I hadn't noticed until now.
"The patient fainted, which is considered normal given her very low blood pressure upon arrival," the nurse calmly explained. "However, this doesn't necessarily mean the bleeding is related to the fainting."
"I don't understand. Please explain further!" Enrico asked anxiously.
"Well, you see, light bleeding can be considered normal in cases of multiple pregnancies, but of course, it requires close attention as it could indicate a miscarriage."
One part of what the nurse said immediately caught my attention.
"Multiple pregnancy?"
"Yes, exactly," the nurse confirmed, then added, "Miss Mitchell is pregnant with twins."
I felt relieved that I was there to almost support Enrico at that moment because I sensed his legs wouldn't hold him, which indeed happened. Enrico fainted.
"It's unbelievable that a man of his size would faint at such an important moment!" Joseph exclaimed indignantly.
It was impossible not to laugh as the nurse helped me position Enrico sitting in one of the comfortable chairs in the room and checked his vital signs.
Everything happened very quickly, and soon Enrico was opening his eyes, closing them immediately when he realized what had happened.
"I can't believe I fainted," Enrico said humorously.
"I'm sorry to inform you that you did, sir," the nurse managed to say with a straight face.
"I don't understand why you're laughing," Enrico grumbled irritably. "Don't you forget that my children are still at risk?"
He was right, and the atmosphere became tense again with expectation when the nurse left. She informed us that Rachel couldn't receive visitors for the time being, as she was on strict bed rest and medication.
As Enrico recovered and resumed pacing back and forth in the room, I noticed the stranger talking to Lindsay in a corner. It made me somewhat uncomfortable, although it didn't make much sense. Perhaps he was her boyfriend or something similar, although he was considerably older and they didn't seem to have much in common.
