Chapter 102
(Maya POV)
The next few days was a blur thanks to my urges, but I was glad my mates were so accommodating. They took every opportunity to be sure I was comfortable and cared for, and not only in the bedroom. Eli would emerge from the kitchen at least once a day with a delicious desert and would sit and feed me until I was full and happy. Noah would cuddle with me while we watched movies or read, and it felt so nice just having that time to be close to him without pack business dragging him away.
In fact, they all spent the entire week waiting on my hand and foot. Tommy explained to me a lot more what going into heat would mean for me in the future. Since this had been my first it had been more intense and possible dangerous for me to conceive since my body’s hormones were so imbalanced. So, we took the need precautious to insure I did not get pregnant this time.
We also all sat down and had a much-needed discussion about our future and whether or not we would want pups. Since our situation was so unique there was a lot to go over. Tommy would be the future alpha, and his role would be passed on to his future heir. We had to decide that our first child would be between Tommy and I only, but any future children could carry the genes of any of the others. As much as I wished none of that mattered, I understood it.
Thomas was not sure if he and I would even be able to conceive a child since Fae did not use the usual form of procreation to produce children. Even the pack doctor was not sure if it would be possible, but they were also not familiar with Fae biology. Thomas did not seem to upset that he may not have a child of his own, but I really hoped that by some miracle I would be able to make that happen. Honestly, I had never really thought of myself as becoming a mother, but I understood that being Luna mean that the pack hoped it would bear a pup at some point.
With things being so different now, I was focusing on my role as future Luna more and more, and leaving the idea of my old powers behind. There was no point in dwelling on things I couldn’t change. I hadn’t seen Freddie in some time since my uncle took over the role of leading the Fae. I had actually not heard much of anything on that front, but assumed things were going well.
So, when my heat was finally over the plans for the Alpha and Luna celebration were in full swing. Tommy’s mother and many in the pack had continued to plan while I had been indisposed, and they wouldn’t let me even have a look at any of the preparations. I decided to busy myself with other pack business, including visiting several pack members. My boys were off doing pack stuff, and Thomas was deep in research again. He was trying so hard to understand our kind and I loved him for it.
“Luna!” A young boy called out to me as I walked along the clutter of homes not far from my house.
I smiled at him as he drew closer. “Hi! You can call me Maya!”
I squatted a little, so I am eye to eye with the little boy who I guessed was maybe four or five years old.
“I like calling you Luna!” He says giving me a toothy smile, which I couldn’t help but return with a smile of my own.
“Okay if you insist, you can call me Luna. What are you doing?” I ask glancing behind him to the direction where he had come.
I saw several more children laughing and kicking a ball around. Several women were crowded around watching, and I assumed they were the children’s mothers.
“We are playing a game, but I’m not very good.” He said offering me a pout.
My heart melted for him instantly. “I’m sure that’s not true! Maybe with some practice you will be as good as the others!”
He nodded and moved closer to me, wrapping his arms around my neck in a hug. I was overwhelmed by his sweetness and when he ran off, I missed the affection he had shown.
“His name is Isaiah.” A woman said walking up beside me as I began to stand.
“Oh?” I ask watching him.
“His parents died when he was two.” She explains.
“He’s an orphan?” I ask her a bit surprised.
She nodded. “We try to find homes for any children who have lost parents, but he hasn’t taken to anyone enough to want to leave us. Actually, you were the first person he had really interacted with outside of the caregivers and the other children.”
“How old is he?” I ask her.
“He’s four.” She says with a smile. “He is a really sweet boy though.”
“Do you think he would maybe come with me for a short time?” I asked turning to her.
She considered it. “He may. It wouldn’t hurt to ask him! Isaiah!”
The little boy ran back to us and looked up at her with a big smile.
“Isaiah, the Luna would like to take you to do something fun for a little bit, would you like that?” She asked him, and I gave him a hopefully smile.
“Okay!” He said happily before turning to me and offering me his hand.
I gladly took it and turned and gave the woman a quite ‘thank you’ before turning and leading Isaiah toward my house.
“So, what do you like to do for fun Isaiah?” I ask him, holding his hand tight.
“I like drawing! Oh, and watching movies!” He said with a little skip.
“Really? I like to do those things too! I have lots of coloring stuff we can play with once we get to my house! Should we test them out?” I didn’t think he could be any happier, but he was nearly jumping out of his skin by the time we reached the house.
“Wow! This is your house?” He asked as we reached the door.
“Yep! Alpha Tommy lives here too, and Eli and Noah! Also, Thomas my other mate lives with us as well.” I explained to him.
“Thomas?” He asked looking to me in confusion.
“Yep! You may have seen him walking around the pack sometimes, but he is a little shy.” I said the last part quietly as if it were a secret.
He giggled as we walked inside.
“I keep all my drawing stuff in the room right there. Do you want to sit here for a second while I go grab them?” I ask him pointing to the couch.
He nods and I quickly run to the room and grabbing everything I could. When I return though I find Thomas and Isaiah watching each other in silence.
“Hey! Did you meet Isaiah?” I ask Thomas as I walk to the coffee table and place all the drawing stuff on top of it.
Thomas watches us but doesn’t answer. I give him a worried look and tell Isaiah to start drawing as soon as he was ready. I left him to it and walked around the couch until
I was standing in front of Thomas, who still watched the boy curiously.
“Hey, you okay?” I ask him in a hushed tone.
That seemed to break his trance and he looked to me and leaned in close. “Whose child is that?”
I laughed a little. “He is an orphan I met today. He was really sweet, and I wanted to spend a little time with him. The caregiver said he doesn’t usually warm up to people.”
“He is alone then?” He asks turning to look at the boy again.
I nod. “Yeah, and if I am going to be a good Luna, I figured spending time with some of the pack members would be a good start. Then I saw him, and I just melted at how cute he is.”
“He is a well looking boy. I would like to join you I think.” He says and turns to sit not far from the boy.
I smiled to myself as Thomas sat and watched the child carefully seeming almost fascinated by the boy. I quickly joined them, and we spent a good hour drawing and eating snack together. As we began to watch a show that he picked, the front door opened, and Noah came in. Isaiah and I turned to look at him and he froze in the doorway.
“Hey you! You’re back early!” I say getting to my feet and walking toward him and giving him a quick peck on the cheek.
“Hi! Is that Isaiah?” He asks me in a hushed voice.
“Yeah! I brought him over for a little playdate!” I said happily.
I looked over and smiled seeing Isaiah talking to Thomas about the show excitedly.
“He doesn’t go with just anyone.” Noah said closing the door but keeping his eyes on the boy.
“I know. That’s what they said, but he ran right up to me and was so sweet that I just wanted to spend more time with him.” I say with a sigh. “Such a sweet boy, it kills me
to know what he lots.”
Before we can say anything more there came a knock at the door. I quickly turned to answer it, and Noah moved toward the couch. When I opened the door, I was met with the same caregiver I had spoken to earlier.
“Hi! I was coming by to pick up Isaiah! This is usually when we feed the kids dinner.” She said sweetly.
I invited her in, and she gasped when she saw Isiah sitting between Thomas and Noah smiling happily.
“Oh my. I have not seen him smile like that in some time.” She says laying her hand over her heart.
“He seemed to really enjoy it here.” I hesitated for a moment. “Would it be ok if he stayed the night?”
She turned to me a little surprised and turned back to look at Isaiah again. Without answering me she walked over so the boy could see her. He didn’t stand right away but offered her a greeting.
“Isaiah, Luna asked if you would like to stay the night. What do you say?” She asked.
“I think that is a very good idea.” Noah says looking to the boy.
“Ok!” Isaiah says and the woman nods and tells him she will come by in the morning to pick him up.
She walked back over to me and offers me a small smile. “I can’t believe this, but he seems so happy, so there is no way I would tear him away.”
“Thank you! I promise we will take good care of him!” I hurriedly promise her.
“Oh, I know you will! Don’t worry, I guess I am just a little taken aback by this! It really is unusual for him. I can come by with a small bag of his things in a little while, would that be ok?” She asks heading toward the door.
“Yes, please that would be great!” I say letting out a little breath of relief.
“Okay, I’ll see you guys in a bit.” She turned and left.
I closed the door and turned to the trio on the couch. My heart tightened watching Thomas and Noah speaking so softly and sweetly to the small boy between them. Something in me was screaming that this little boy was special. He was an orphan like me and deserved all the love and care we could offer him while he is with us.
But would one night be enough? Could I really say goodbye?
