Chapter 50
(Maya POV)
Oliver had told me that he and some of the others in the pack had a plan, but I had not seen him since. I had not gotten word from him that he found the mate he sensed following him. I found myself pacing back and forth waiting for something, anything that would let me know I would be getting out of here soon.
My father had also not come, which only made my anxiety build since his threat. He wanted to bring my mates here, which could only mean he planned to go to our pack and take them. Had he gone already? I hated not knowing what was happening and being stuck here unable to help. Although what could I really do? I had shifted once and killed someone without realizing what I was doing. He says I have all these powers within me, but I have no idea how to bring them out or even what they are.
I guess I wouldn’t be much help in a fight.
I stopped in front of the window and looked out over the pack. This had been my pack once, and it seemed some were willing to accept me. If I did become the next alpha of this pack and save these people, I would have to kill my father first. It seemed like an obvious thing that needed to happen but killing my last living parent was not an easy thing to consider. He was a monster, but he was all the family I had left. So much had happened since my parent’s death, it all seemed endless.
These headaches and nausea didn’t help to keep my head from spiraling with anxiety and worry. I had started feeling off since yesterday, and today it only got worse. The headache had been dull at first but now it was getting stronger and in turn was making my stomach queasy. I missed my mates so much, and as much as I wanted to see them, I hoped they would stay far away. I did not them to be prisoners like I was. They never asked for this, and I did not want them to suffer because of me. Maybe, if I simple rejected them they could be free. It would hurt for a while I’m sure, but they could move on and be happy.
It was cruel to hold on to them. If I was never to leave this place, letting them go would be a mercy I would gladly give them. Even if it killed me.
(Eli POV)
“It’s time.” Oliver said to me after ending the phone call he had been on. “I will take you to the main house carefully, and when the explosion goes off, we will wait for the guards to be called away and it should be all clear for us to reach Maya.”
“This plan still sounds totally crazy by the way.” I say once again.
“Maya is willing to help us, that is enough of a reason for us to risk helping her. She is the only one who can fight her father and have a chance at beating him. I know it sounds cliché, but she really is our last hope. No other Alphas have dared face him, and she is his only heir.” Oliver reminded me.
I still could not believe everything I had learned about Maya, but it didn’t change one thing. I have never felt more complete than when she became my mate. Nothing would scare me away.
Oliver watched his phone for a few moments more, and a few moments later the sound of the explosion hit us.
“Now! Let’s go!” Oliver said opening the back door with me in tow.
We walked along the back of the house toward the direction of the main house, using the trees as cover when several groups of guards rushed past shifting and racing toward the explosion. Oliver had given me some of his clothes to wear to mask my scent, and it seemed to work because we moved quickly and if the guards picked up our scent, they did not acknowledge it.
As soon as we reached the pack house we hid and watched to the door for the guards still inside to leave. Soon several men came running out and shifting instantly before taking off in the direction of the disturbance. We waited a few moments more, and when it seemed no others would be coming out, we rushed toward the house. Once inside Oliver and I walked carefully through the house listening and smelling for anyone left inside.
“Her room is just up here.” He said leading me to a staircase.
The stairs led us to a long hallway full of old paintings of the families who had lived here. I stopped when I saw a man who shared slightly similar features to Maya and stood eyeing it.
“That is the alpha.” Oliver whispered.
“Why did he choose such a pose? It’s disgusting.” I say turning my eyes away.
“He is proud of the loves he has taken and wants others to know what he is capable of.” Oliver said. “the worst part is, that was his father.”
I stopped and looked once more at the image. He had killed his own father in his wolf form and cut off his head, holding it like a prized trophy. Had he told Maya what he had done? Had he threatened to do the same to her?
“Let’s go.” I said walking in the direction we had been heading before.
We turned down another hallway and this one had many doors.
“Her room is at the very end.” Oliver said leading the way.
I smiled as soon as her scent hit me, she was so close!
Oliver stopped in front of the last door of the hallway. He was right the guards had been called away, but I kept watch as he pulled a set of keys from his pocket. The door was thick wood and had a large locked bolt on it. Oliver removed the lock from the bolt and unlocked the door. As soon as it was unlocked a chair came hurdling at us from inside. We moved away in time to not be hit by it, and when we turned to look in the room again there stood Maya out of breath and furious.
“Maya!” Her face fell and her eyes instantly widened at seeing me.
“Oh my god! Eli!” She said in a hushed tone before running toward me and jumping into my arms.
It felt like a dream holding her again, and I was probably holding her too tight, but I was overwhelmed.
She was here and I was not letting her go.
“Eli I can’t believe you are here!” She said with tears falling.
I reached up and brushed them away with my thumb and threaded my hand through her hair pulling her close and bringing our lips together. My whole body lit instantly, like I had found the one thing I needed to be myself again.
“I don’t want to rush your reunion, but it is best if we get moving before the guards return.” Oliver said glancing down the hallway.
“Let’s get you out of her love!” I tell Maya taking her hand and leading her out of the door.
We moved quicker than when we came, and we were out of the house in no time. The guards had still not returned, so we ran back the way Oliver and I had come. Maya stumbled suddenly and I stopped to help her back to her feet. Once she was standing again, I heard rustling coming from a few feet away in the tree line. We froze and listened carefully.
“Let’s hurry!” Oliver whispered to us, and we began running toward his house again.
Soon it was in view and we pushed forward as fast as we could until we made it through the back door. Once inside Oliver locked it, and we took a step back from it. We waited to hear if anyone had followed us, but no other sounds were heard.
“I think we are safe.” Oliver said with a relieved smile.
Maya let out a sigh of relief before turning and wrapping her arms around my neck. I pulled her closer and held her tight.
“Come on, the others are waiting.” Oliver said walking through the kitchen door.
“I can’t believe their plan actually worked!” Maya said pulling away to look at me.
“Yeah, it sounded crazy to me too.” I admitted.
Maya smiled up at me and buried her head into my chest, wrapping her arms around my waist.
“I can’t believe you’re here! I have missed you so much!” I barely hear her say through the fabric of my shirt.
I held her close again and we stood there like this for a few moments just holding one another. Her scent was all around me and I felt like I could breathe again.
“So how do we get out of this place and go home?” She asks looking up at me.
“Let’s go find out what other crazy plans Oliver has.” I say leading her out of the kitchen.
We walked through and I could not keep my eyes away from Maya, until she froze suddenly, and her expression changed to horror.
“I don’t think Oliver will be doing much planning anymore.”
The alpha.
