Chapter 109
Maya POV
It had been happening for the last few days and I figured the few times I had felt it were a coincidence. I knew there was a chance that my powers would come back but I had felt almost relived that they were gone. They brought trouble since I had such a hard time trying to control them, and with everything I was already dealing with I just didn’t have the energy to handle all that again. I didn’t care about my destiny when I was struggling to help my pack rebuild their home. They needed me focused on them and I was determined to do just that. In their eyes I was the alpha and that meant I had to take care of them, or at least that was what I assumed an alpha was supposed to do. I never really did find out everything being an alpha really entails since I was never going to be the one to take on that mantel.
This morning though the jolt I felt was too strong to ignore and when I rushed to the bathroom, I was met with my eyes shining like a lighthouse beacon. I blinked a few times trying to push down the electric magic coursing through me hoping to lock it away until I was ready to deal with all that. My luck was never good though, so when the room began to tremble, I knew locking this away wouldn’t work. My powers were back with a vengeance and I had no idea why. They had been gone and I convinced myself that it was for good, but I couldn’t have been more wrong.
“Maya?” I turn to see Thomas standing in the doorway with a small look of surprise.
“I can’t stop it.” I cried out as the energy flowed further through my body.
This was Deja Vu plain and simple, and I was just as hopeless as when Thomas first found me. I didn’t let him get a word in though. I pushed past him and ran as fast as I could until I was standing in a clearing just far enough away from the house. I didn’t have a chance to run further before a pulse of lightening energy shot out from me and straight into the sky. My eyes were turned up at the sky and through the fog I could see that storm clouds had rolled in overnight and my electric pulse was eaten up by the dense clouds.
I allowed myself a momentary thought of relief that maybe now the energy was out of me, but that wasn’t what happened. The energy I sent out rippled through the clouds causing cracking sounds to echo down to me. Something was wrong. My power had never been this strong and something told me that I needed to find out why. That had to wait though because the clouds began to light up and all that energy rippled until it settled just above the very spot where I stood looking up at the sky.
I should run. That would have been the smart thing to do, but I didn’t. If something was happening, I needed to know about it. The clouds above me began to rumble and I was ready to face whatever it was when I heard cries and scream coming from the direction of our house. I turned my attention to that direction and my heart sank as I saw Isaiah running right for me with Noah and Eli running after him.
“Isaiah! No!” I called out but it was too late.
He was in arms reach and I grabbed him and wrapping my body around him as the energy in the clouds came crashing down around me. The world around me fell silent my breaths being the only thing I could hear. My eyes had been clenched tight when I was not sure what was about to happen, but I slowly opened them to look down at the boy I was shielding. My heart stopped as our eyes met. Eyes that looked just like mine, white and shining with power.
“Isaiah…” I say softly as I try to understand what I’m seeing.
Relief and confusion take over me but all I can do is hold him tight and thank whatever fate this was that he was alive. When my heart finally began to slow, I looked around us to see the forcefield surrounding us, but that wasn’t the strangest thing. Two tethers were coming from the force field that seemed to be connecting Isaiah and I to its power. I lifted my arms and examined the way it was wrapped around me and not only that, but it connected Isaiah and I together as well. He looked up at me and smiled.
“It’s ok mommy.” He says and I am at a loss for words. “We’re together now.”
My mind was firing in all directions trying to make sense of what he was saying. What did he mean? Before I could even begin to put things together the field around us began to flicker like a light bulb going out and then it was gone with nothing more than smoke in its wake. My legs buckle and I tumble to the floor. I look at Isaiah and he steps up to me and rests a small hand on my cheek. Noah and Eli were calling out to us as they ran over to where Isaiah and I were and immediately wrapped their arms around us. Eli pulled Isaiah back a little and looked him over for injury while Noah just held me.
“What happened? How was he not hurt? He’s fine! I don’t understand.” Eli says in panicked confusion.
Words were lost to me, but I kept my eyes locked on the small boy’s.
“What happened Maya? What was all that?” Noah asks me softly.
“I-I don’t know. I have felt small bits of power and it was barely enough to assume my full powers were returning. This was the first time I felt anything this strong since before.” I tried to explain. “Something…. I feel like something caused it…and Isaiah. I don’t understand.” I say stumbling over my words.
Before any of us can speak again Thomas walks up to us with a grim expression on his face.
“Something did happen.” He says locking eyes with me.
“What is it, Thomas? Tell me.” I say when we are all finally back inside the house.
It took some time to assure the pack that everything was fine and that they weren’t in any real danger and that everything would be explained later, but we were finally alone.
Thomas had looked haunted since he came out to find us, and that was saying something since he was the one in most control of his emotions.
“It’s the Fae world.” He begins.
I feel my heart clench as my thoughts immediately go to my brother.
“What Thomas?” I push harder.
“It’s gone.” He says simply and I feel my legs go weak again.
Noah is up and helping me to sit before Thomas can explain. I take a few breaths in before I look up at my Fae mate again.
“What does that mean?” I ask knowing how stupid that question sounds.
“The whole world was destroyed.” He says too simply like that statement alone answers everything.
“If everything was destroyed then how do you know what happened?” Eli asks.
“Because I told him.” All our heads snap to the man entering the room.
I let out a cry of relief and scramble to my feet and throw my arms around my brother’s neck.
“Oh my god! I thought…” I couldn’t even say the words.
He was the only real family I had left and for a split second I thought I had lost him. My uncle was technically family, but I didn’t trust him and didn’t know him well enough
to call him family, so he was not my first concern.
“What happened Freddie?” I ask pulling away from him.
“They came out of nowhere Maya. We had no idea what was happening until it was too late. It was a slaughter…so many dead. I barely got away to come warn you….” He was rambling and I could barely follow his words.
“Freddie! Who? What are you talking about?” I ask him firmly.
“The Blood Demons…”
The room falls silent, and I look at him then to my mates and shiver at the horror in their faces.
“Blood demons? As in…” I begin to ask.
Thomas nods. “Vampires. But not the kind humans know…far worse…far more deadly. And they have just declared war, one we are nowhere near ready to fight.”
His words hit me like a bullet, and I can’t help but remember the words that were given to explain my birth. War was coming and I was the one meant to end it. But the Fae had already fallen, and it made me wonder how many worlds would be lost if I failed.
