Chapter 72
(Maya POV)
I had never felt this sleepy before, and I think it was messing with my mind a little bit. I kept hearing the boys talking and what they were saying made no sense. I could have sworn there was someone saying they were my mate, but it was not one of my three boys. Yet, when I started opening my eyes once again, I was back in my room. It was dark and I assumed that everything that had happened must have been some kind of crazy dream. That was until my eye fell on the chair in the corner of my room. I sat up quickly with a scream of surprise.
“W-who are you? What do you want?” I ask panicked, covering myself with my blanket as if it could actually protect me.
The figure shift in the dark and leans forward so his face is shown by the moon light coming in from the window.
“I was sent by the Fae council to help you, but when I arrived you were having a strong reaction to your powers. I had to use my powers to subdue you.
Unfortunately, it has made you very groggy, sorry about that.” The man says giving me a smile.
“Oh.” Is all I say lowering the blanket. “So why are you here? You know…in my room?”
He smiles. “Your mates thought it would be good if we were alone for a while. I have some things to explain to you.”
“Like what?” I ask him, clearing my throat and trying to wake up more.
“Well, it seems the Fae council did not send me for no reason. Because…well…man this is a little harder than it thought it would be. Meeting you I mean.” I watch him fidget nervously.
I only remembered flashes of him from what I thought was dream, and he seemed calmer before. What changed?
“I thought I had been dreaming this whole time, but since you are sitting in front of me…that tells me we have met already. Right?” I ask slightly confused still.
My head was a mess right now and I was trying to remember everything, but it was difficult.
He laughs a little. “Yes, we did meet, that’s when I realized who you were.”
I shook my head because…what is he talking circles around?
“I’m sorry but my head is still very grumbled, what is it that you are trying to tell me?” I regretted how irritated it sounded but I just couldn’t think clearly.
“Right, sorry! Well, simply put…I am your soulmate.” He says with a nervous smile.
So, I had not imagined it.
“What? That can’t be! I mean I already have three! How could I have another? That’s crazy! Who the heck has four mates?!” I yelled at him.
I stood and my legs began to wobble, and two strong arms were wrapped around me almost instantly.
“Hey careful! You are still recovering.” The man says to me softly.
I turned my head to look up at him and I groaned loudly from frustration. Why did all of mate have to be so gorgeous? It made it hard to hate them, especially with their strong arms always ready to catch me! I squirmed out of his hold and sat on the bed crossing my arms. I knew I looked like a pouting child, but this was all too much! I had not chosen any of this! Who was deciding these things for me? Why would anyone think one girl would want four mates? I wanted to scream!
“I know this a probably a lot for you right now. Would you rather be alone?” he asks taking a seat back in the chair he had been sitting in when I first woke up.
I sighed, because no I didn’t want to push him away. I had already felt the pain of not being with my mates, and I never wanted to feel that gain. Although, I was not sure how it worked between Fae.
“No. You said you wanted to explain, so…” I looked up to him and he had a stupid grin on his face.
I rolled my eyes at that but didn’t say anything. I wanted to be a brat right now.
“Well, I basically we were chosen before birth to be a mated pair. The council does this when they think the two Faes can eventually produce a child with stronger abilities. Also being paired together can help our own abilities as well grow stronger!” He starts, but I soon interrupt him.
“Wait! Before birth? How? How would the council even know about me?” I ask.
His excited energy slows, and he looks a little nervous again.
“Ah! Well….I guess there is a lot you don’t know.” He says rubbing the back of his neck.
“Like what?” I ask firmly.
“Well, you see….your mother was Fae.” He blurts out.
I looked at him for a second and then I let out a loud laugh. He seemed confused by my reaction and laughed along with me a little nervously until my laugh turned to crying. By that point he looked panicked! I started crying harder as the seconds passed and he quickly moved to my side and tried to talk to me, but I couldn’t hold back anymore. Soon three large men push through my door and run to me.
“What happened?” Eli asked grabbing the new guy.
“I don’t know! I told her that her mother was a Fae and she started laughing and then started crying!” The new guy said quickly but with a nervous stutter.
Noah sat beside me and wrapped his arm around me pulling me into his chest, while Tommy knelt in front of me holding onto my hands tightly.
“What happened love?” Eli asks letting go of the other guy and sitting on the other side of me.
“I just don’t know what is happening! Everything I thought I knew about my parents is a lie! Everything about my life has been a lie! Why?” I said through my sobs.
“Your mom was trying to keep you safe. She knew what kind of man your father was, that’s why she took you away! Maybe she didn’t tell you what she really was because she thought it would put you in danger.” Eli says brushing his fingers through my hair.
A few more sniffles later I began to feel more relaxed with all my boys around me. I looked to the guy standing off to the corner of the room awkwardly and my heart broke. He looked regretful and sad, and I realized he must feel terrible that I reacted to him this way. I was angry and I let him think it was his fault, when in reality none of this was any of our faults. None of has chosen this life, but it is what we have been given. Once I felt calm again, I sat up and pulled out of the grasps of my three other mates and walked toward the other man.
He looked up at me with sad eyes and I felt awful, so I slowly slipped my arms around his waist and pulled him into a gentle hug. I felt his body tense up at first and I felt him lift his head to look back at the others before he too wrapped his arms around me. The strange thing is, it felt right! Just like with the others, it didn’t feel strange to be this close to him. My head lay against his chest and for a moment I listened to his heart and I giggled a little at the sound it made. It didn’t sound like any other heart I had ever heard before.
“What?” He asked softly.
I smiled. “Your heart. I have never heard anything like it…it almost sounds like…like its fluttering.”
It reminded me of the sound of a hummingbird’s wings fluttering against the air.
“Oh! Yeah it’s a Fae thing.” He says with a small laugh.
He hesitated but soon tightened his grip on me. “I’m so sorry Maya. Sorry you have so much to deal with, and now one more thing shas been thrown at you. But I am here to help you, not hurt you. I promise!” He whispers in my ear.
I hear a voice clear from behind us and I turned slightly to see my three other mates standing now.
“We will leave you to talk.” Noah says giving the other two a nudge toward the door.
Tommy and Eli watched me as they left the room, and I made a note to myself to spend some time with each of them later.
“Why don’t we sit down, and I will tell you everything that I know. Whatever I can answer for you, I will!” he says looking down at me.
I nod and we pull asway and take a seat on my bed. For the next hour or two he tells me everything he had told the boys earlier and a bit more about the Fae council.
“Wow. I can’t believe my mom came such an amazing place and she never told me any stories about it! I wish I could have seen it.” I say.
“You can one day if you wish!” Thomas says happily.
I smile at him. “I would like that!”
“Do you have any other questions?” he asks me after a brief silence.
“Actually, I was wondering how mating works between Fae.” I say looking to him.
He smiles. “Well, our bonding is a little different than wolves. It’s more of a unseen connection. Actually, we have already bonded.” He says simply.
“What? How?” I ask eyes wide.
“You were still a little out of it, but we touched and that was when our bond was awakened and formed. That’s all it takes for us. Through our first touch an energy passes between us and connects us.” He says simply.
“Wow! So that’s all it takes? I guess that is simple enough. But I don’t really feel any different.” I admit.
“It may be because you are only half Fae, you do not notice the small things like we do. You have wolf blood in you as well, and that makes you depend more on your senses to recognize your mate, right? It’s different with Fae, we can sense each other’s aura I guess you can call it. The energy that flows through all living things, including each other. When you are mated, and you look at your mate you can actually see an aura glow around them. This only happens between two mates.” He explains.
“Really? Do-do you see an aura around me?” I ask shyly.
He moves slightly to turn and look at me properly. He smiles softly. “I do.”
My eyes grow with surprise. “Really what does it look like?”
He laughs at my excitement. “It’s beautiful!”
I can’t help but blush a little at his comment and he moves closer to me once more slowly reaching for my hand. When our hands are hovering right above each other, there is a little shot of electricity that passes between us.
“What was that?” I ask him.
“We can pass energy between each other; it allows us to feel more connected to each other and to help make our mate stronger. With practice you will learn how to control your powers like this. That’s why I was sent and even though I will be staying now, I will still help you.” He says threading our fingers together and squeezing them tightly.
“Ok.” I reply softly before resting my head on his shoulder.
Something inside me was telling me that there was so much more going on that we still didn’t know about. Things keep happening that on their own make no sense, but as the past weeks run through my mind, I start to realize…it’s as if bits of a puzzle have been slowly falling into place. But for what? Why were the four of us brought together? Why now?
There had to be a reason, and we needed to find out what it is.
