Chapter 87

(Maya POV)

“She is coming to.” A voice says.

“The voice is probably normal volume but with the left-over results of my night of drinking, the pounding in my head cranked the volume to a hundred. I let out a groan and brought my hand to my head thinking somehow touching it would ease some of the aching, but as I try to sit up the pounding behind my ears only gets worse.

“Hey, careful. I am guessing you don’t drink much; you are going to have a killer headache for a bit.” The guy who was speaking before says.

I can feel him try to steady me and I force my eyes open to try and figure out where I was.

My eyes fall on a guy sitting behind a desk of some kind. I glance around and the room looks like a sort of old-fashioned study or something. Something I had seen in a British tv show once. I look next to me and see a very smiley guy sitting beside me. My mind goes blank, and I have no idea how to react. The most sensible thing would freak out because I was in a strange place with people I didn’t recognize, but this wasn’t the first time this has happened, so I don’t bother. It’s clear they want something from me and freaking out would only waste time.

“Whatever you want I’m sure I don’t have it nor can I help you get it.” I say casually.

The man next to me looks to the guy behind the desk with concern. I also look to the man who is simply glancing up at me from behind some papers. He looked annoyed that I was even there, which made no sense since he was the one who kidnapped me.

“We do not want anything from you Miss Proctor. Actually, there is something you may want form us.” The man had an accent and with my obsession with British tv I recognized where he was from right away.

“What would I want form people I have never met?” I ask messaging my head a bit more.

“The truth perhaps.” He says quirking an eyebrow at me.

“Oh? Truth about what?” I ask trying to sound interested but this headache was a killer and I really just wanted to curl up and die.

I would usually find this situation a little nerve wracking, but I was kind of glad this hangover was keeping me too distracted to really care about much else.

“The truth about the Fae.” He says standing and walking around and leaning against the front of his desk.

“I see. So, what is this great truth you wish to share with me?” I ask.

Maybe the effects of the alcohol had not worn off as much as I thought, but he chuckled softly for a second.

“Well, first things…what did they tell you about the deal your mother made with them?” The man asks straight away.

I glance at him and squint my eyes thinking so how if I looked at him hard enough, I would know if I could trust him or not. Of course, it didn’t help at all and only made my head hurt worse. I groaned and rubbed my eyes for a moment before looking back to him and answering.

“They said she came to them so that I would be protected from my father. Something about having enough power to fight back when it was time.” I said waving my hand in the air with exaggerated annoyed looks.

The guy next to me chuckles at my behavior but stay otherwise silent. The guy with the accent sighs and shakes his head.

“I see they are still trying to hide.” Is all he says for a moment. “The truth is that your mother was my sister. She was taken away from us and sent to be mated to an Alpha wolf who had been known to be a ruthless and heartless killer.”

“So, you’re my uncle?” I ask him with utter surprise.

Was it a Fae thing to look ageless because he looked young enough to be my brother.

“Yes I am. When your mother was taken, we appealed to the council to let us go to her and be sure she was safe. They refused. Our father had been killed thanks to that Alpha’s family; he would have never let her be sent to be with such a horrible man. So, we left the Fae world and tried to find her, but when we finally found out where she was…she had already run away with another man. Our contact from your father’s pack said they had no idea where she went. That was until an old family friend said they saw her being escorted to the main council hall. After she was taken away, she wasn’t spotted again.” He explains.

Suddenly I felt very sober and awake.

“After a few months we found out what the council had done….and why.” He says looking up at me, and something like sympathy was pouring out of the look he gave.

“I don’t understand what any of that has to do with what is happening now.” I say a little annoyed.

I seemed like entire life was a secret other knew about and I knew absolutely nothing. It was really starting to get old that somehow, I was a part of some big conspiracy and I was the only one without a single clue about what was going on half the time.

“The Fae want you to step into the role of grand ruler. The one to lead all of us in unity. What we know is that they want to exploit that power to make the Fae world the center of it all. They have always believed their kind to be the more superior race, and they needed a reason to take control without anyone actually knowing. They need a puppet, and they picked you from birth to be the face of their super rule.” The last sentence was said in almost a growl. “They took advantage of a scared girl, turning her daughter into a future martyr. Well, I won’t let that happen. I want to protect you Maya!”

I let out annoyed groan with a slight growl. What the actual heck was all of this? This was a mazer of lies and scheme and deceit that was just too bizarre and all I wanted to do was run away from it all. This was insane!

“Maya, I know this has not been easy for you, and I wish I could have been there with you since the beginning. I am sorry you have had to go through this alone. But if it is any consolation, you are not without family. In fact, you have two other uncles and one aunt as well! We all want to help you, so you don’t have to deal with all this alone.”

He steps closer and sits on the other side of me. “We just need to know what the Fae want you to do. Your father didn’t provide us with much information.”

I look to him in with a questioning look. “You spoke to my father?”

The guy next to me huffed and chuckled a little. “In a way.” He says under his breath.

I look to my uncle again and wait for an explanation.

“Your father was taken by some of our men so that we could have a talk with him. Let’s just say they didn’t get much out of him. Unfortunately, we weren’t the only family who was victim to his blood shed. Some of our men lost family because him as well. He was left alone, and someone slipped into to his cell and killed him while the guards were away.” He says rubbing the back of his neck.

“He’s dead?” I ask in disbelief. “Wait! The accident…that was you? I almost died!”

I stand suddenly and glare down at him.

“That was a mistake. We had no idea you were with him! My men took your father and tried to get away without being seen. I admit we are not well trained for such things. I would have never allowed them to attack if I knew you were in one of those cars! I’m so sorry.” I wanted to believe him.

If what he was saying is true, he was my family but obviously not some criminal master mind. It seemed like he and his crew were running on pure revenge and I guess that isn’t enough to make them actually good at executing their plans. I sighed and fell back into my seat.

“Look, I have no idea what is going on half the time. I have been blindsided for months with one thing after another. All I know is that I am just trying to survive.” I admit.

“I understand. You didn’t ask to be involved in this. It’s between our families and the Fae council. You are innocent! However, the Fae do want to have control over you and what you can bring to them. Control. So, what we need to do is be sure that they don’t get what they want.” My uncle says taking my hand and giving it a tight squeeze.

“How do we do that?” I ask him.

He smiles and looks to his friend sitting on the other side of me.

“It’s time to call a witch.” He says with a smirk.

Something was telling me that there was something special about witches that I was not aware of. And what exactly would this witch do to me to make me no longer valuable to the Fae Council? I concluded that I probably wouldn’t like the answer to that, so I didn't ask it aloud. My mind wandered over the possbalitites but none of them were good. One positive thing popped into my mind though....My father was gone. I didn't need to be afraid of him taking me and locking me away again, but now I had an even more powerful enemy. One that had already shown their power by creating me into the thing they were desperate for. I didn't know if i could trust my so called uncle, but my options were limited at this point. Everyone seemed to have an agenda, and I was the key to them all. I may give the illusion that I am on board with all these deals and plans, but in my mind....if they all wanted something from me, I would find a way to make sure no one got what they wanted from me. Because I had a few plans of my own...
