Chapter 37
(Tommy's POV)
"I want double patrols along the entire border leading out of town. These men snatched Maya right under our nose, we need to find them before they slip out of our reach! Go!" My father's voice thunder through the meeting hall.
"Yes Alpha!" Said the pack in return, and then turning and heading toward the border.
Almost the entire pack headed to the border to begin patrol and searching for Maya. My father, mother, Noah, Eli, Will and I remained behind.
"I know you boys are feeling the effects of the mate bond and want to run and search for her blindly until you find her but that is not wise. We need to plan our searches carefully to cover the most ground. Did you pick up her scent where she was taken?" My father asks us.
"We followed the scene for 5 miles before it was lost. My guess is that it was intentional and then her scent was covered so we wouldn't figure out which direction they actually left in. We didn't follow the direction the scent was heading in because I figured it was a diversion." I tell him.
"I think you are right. If I had to guess, they would find shelf near the border and search for an opening to slip through probably some time tonight. Darkness will hide them better, so they will is that as an advantage. We need to prepare for that possibility by keeping as many of the pack near the border as we can. I suspect a small group involved, no more than 3 would be able to slip in without us noticing." My father theorizes.
"Then we better go as well." I say standing, with my friends following my actions.
"Wait." My father says stopping us.
"It may not be a good idea for you guys to be out there. You are emotionally compromised right now. Your judgement may be clouded by your bond. It may be best to let the rest of us find her." My father suggests.
"No!" I shout in anger. "She is our mate, and we will help find her. She needs to see us when we find her! That's the only way she will know she really is safe!" I say in protest.
"Son you need to take some time and get your head straight. You are angry, we can feel it. You need to control that anger and focus on saving Maya. Trust the pack son, they will find her!" My father continues.
"I'm going!" I say firmly.
"So am I!" Eli and Noah say together.
My father sighs and turns to us.
"Find her and bring her home boys." He says giving in.
We nod at him and head out the door.
"Goddess help them and be with Maya too!" I hear my mom say as we leave the meeting hall.
The four of us walk toward the forest along the pack house and make our way toward the border.
"Do you really think they are still in the territory?" Eli asks.
"I think my dad is right, it would make more sense for them to travel at night. They have plenty of covering in the forest and in wolf form they can make it through the border quickly if there is an opening to do so. We need to make sure as much of the border is covered." I tell him.
"She seems really scared Tommy, we need to find her." Eli says.
He is keeping his link to her open, but I can't. I need to have a clear head and if I let my mate bond open to her and feel all her emotions I would fall apart. Eli has always been the more sensitive one out of our group, and he needs to know how she is feeling to help him cope. If he is sensing her than we know she is still alive and that is enough for me.
"Has she tried to speak at all?" I ask him.
"No, I don't think she remembers she can, even if she could her fear is making it hard for her to focus. I get a word here and there, but it doesn't make much sense." Eli says rubbing the back of his neck.
"What is she saying?" I ask him.
"Metallic ocean. Dark sea.....things like that." Eli says with a sigh don't know what it means."
I think about the words she is saying for a moment. Metallic ocean? What could that possibly mean? It's nonsense, they must have drugged her, and she must be confused.
"Dark sea?.... Maybe wherever she is must be dark then." Noah says suddenly. "Ocean could mean she smells water."
"But there is no ocean near here, so how can she be smelling ocean water?" I ask him.
"The words sound almost figurative, not literal." Noah says thinking aloud.
Maya did read a lot, and so did Noah if anyone could figure out what she was saying it would be him. Suddenly a thought crept into my mind. Eli had always been more sensitive and emotional then the rest of us, Noah was a thinker and was always reading, and I was the strong one. We were all so different, but somehow we worked together like a well-oiled machine. Could that be why we were all mated to Maya, we each symbolized a part of her. We all encompassed the best parts of Maya, for what reason I still didn't know. Maybe I was over thinking it, but if that was true it would take all of us to find her.
"Maya reads a lot, maybe in her current state she is repeating words she remembers reading. Maybe she is trying to figure out the right words to get a message to us." I say turning to my friends.
"It would be a lot easier if she just said, 'Here I am' and give us a location." Will said with frustration.
"If she was drugged and she is scared she isn't thinking straight, this maybe her trying to reach us. Maybe she is too weak and can't say much more. Keep trying to reach her Eli and let us know everything she says." I order my friend.
He nods and closes his eyes for a moment to try and connect to her. By now we have made to the border and spread out to cover a bigger section. I try to pick up any unusual scents in the air, but all I pick up is the scents of the pack members.
But there was only one scent I wished to the goddess I will be able to smell again.... I have to find her.
