Damien's POV

I stepped out of the room and walked briskly through the opulent corridors of the palace. My mind was disturbed, swirling with thoughts about Freda's safety. Granting her permission to leave the castle had been a concession I hadn't expected to make. Even though she was going to be the next queen of Valthrun, she hadn't been properly introduced to the public.
Besides she was still a hybrid and she was suspectable to attacks. I needed suitable guards that's would protect my mate, even at the cost of their lives.
Making up my mind on my choice, I beckoned to a maid to come to me. Stunned, she trembled as she made her way to me and bowed.
“Go…good morning your majesty.” She muttered.
“Find me Captain Volkov. Now!” I ordered. The poor maid jumped, startled by my command.
“Y-yes, your majesty.” She stammered and scurried off in the direction I had pointed. A moment later, the bulked figure of the captain of my guards marched towards me.
“You called for me your majesty?” He bowed, his deep voice booming.
“Captain Volkov,” I acknowledged him. “I have a task for you.”
“I'm at your service my liege.” He nodded.
“I want you to escort my mate to the finest clothing boutique in the kingdom.” I commanded and waited for the reaction that was to come.
Sure enough, his eyes widened and his jaw nearly dropped but he composed himself as he cleared his throat and nodded
“What is your question Volkov?” I asked in amusement.
“No..nothing your majesty. It’s just. You know…the true nature of your mate. I'm afraid taking her out of the castle isn't the best course of action.” He coughed as he offered his suggestion.
“That is why you'll be there to protect her.” I cut him off with a sharp gesture. “Her safety is paramount.”
“Of course, I will protect her with my life.” Volkov straightened his posture and bowed
I gave a curt nod. "Excellent. But Captain," I added, my voice dropping to a low growl, "if even a single hair on her head is harmed, you will answer me. Personally.”
A shiver ran down Volkov's spine at the fury in my voice. "Understood, Your Majesty.”
I retrieved another, even larger pouch of gold coins from my pocket and tossed it at the captain.
“This is in addition to the one I gave her. If the lady desires the whole good damn store, buy her the store. You understand?”
Volkov's eyes widened at the sight of the overflowing pouch. "Of course, Your Majesty. We will ensure Lady Freda's satisfaction.”
"See that you do," I said, my voice leaving no room for misinterpretation. "And report back to me immediately upon your return.”
With a final curt nod, I dismissed the Captain. With that settled, I marched to the dinning hall to meet uncle Kieran. There was a lot of things I needed to set in order and I resolved that today would be the day I arranged my royal court.
