Damien's POV

“Those are crucial positions. I have someone in mind for the Grand Master of Coin, but for the Royal Spymaster, I'll need your expertise, Uncle.” I nodded at his suggestions.
A satisfied smirk played on his lips. "Of course, nephew. Leave it to me. I know just the fellow, I'll bring him in tomorrow so you can see him for yourself.”
We continued in this vein, discussing the roles of the Royal Chancellor, the Ambassador to the High Council of Vampires, and the Captain of the Royal Guard – all positions of immense power and influence.
For each, I offered my own suggestions, some vampires I'd known for years, others whose reputations preceded them. Uncle Kieran grumbled at a few of my choices, surprised by a name here and intrigued by another there, but ultimately, he deferred to my judgment.
Finally, after a lengthy discussion, we reached a lull. Uncle Kieran leaned back in his chair, a thoughtful look on his face. "You know, Damien," he said slowly, "there's always a place for a trusted advisor by the King's side. Someone with experience, someone who can offer a different perspective.”
I shook my head as I knew exactly where exactly my uncle was heading too. He was suggesting a position for himself, a powerful role that would grant him immense influence over my decisions. The idea wasn't unwelcome. Uncle Kieran was a seasoned warrior and a shrewd strategist, but somehow, I felt a sense of dread in my gut. I always listened to my gut instincts and It has saved me countless times, I was about to ignore this time.
“There is indeed, Uncle.” I replied “And truthfully I can't think of a better person for this job but the position of Royal advisor requires someone with a….well rounded skill set. Someone who can not only advise on military matters but also understand the politics of the court. A well rounded advisor.”
As expected, Uncle Kieran’s brows furrowed in displeasure.
“of course. You are correct.” He mumbled after a moment of consideration. “A king needs a versatile adviser. It would be one of his most prized assets.”
"Precisely, Uncle. And while your experience on the battlefield is unmatched, perhaps someone else would be better suited for the diplomatic side of things.” A hint of a smile played on my lips.
I loved Uncle Kieran, with all my heart but when it came to issues of power, it was wise I kept my trust for him aside and acted like a king. Tales of families betraying each other have been told through out our history and what I did to get this throne was no different. I wouldn't want a repeat and I was just being as careful as I possibly could.
As you wish, nephew. You're the king, after all. But don't underestimate the value of a blunt truth spoken in the right ear."
"Never," I assured him, genuinely appreciating his pragmatism. "Now, about the Royal Ambassador…”
Our conversation continued with uncle Kieran providing his input and me making the final decisions. By the time we finished our discussions, the sun had reached it's zenith.
Finally the framework for my new court was complete and all that was left was the formal announcements.
“Thank you so much uncle, I value your counsel.” I shook his hand firmly.
“It's alright. But I have a question though.” His eyes narrowed and my ears perked up to listen to what he had to say.
