Chapter 110

The following day, after bidding farewell to Viola, who remained unaware of the situation, Lily and Alexander headed to the central police station for questioning. Outside the station, they encountered families of the disabled and friends of some orphans, all protesting and demanding her arrest. They held signs with Lily's name and messages like "Arrest Lily Kane."

Though Lily remained composed, Alexander stayed close by her side as they exited the car. Approximately 20 bodyguards surrounded them, shielding them from the angry crowd as they entered the police station. Protesters hurled eggs and tomatoes at her, but the bodyguards used umbrellas to block the projectiles. Alexander protected his beloved wife until they were safely inside the police commissioner’s office.

They sat down on the office couch while the guards secured the door. Alexander scanned the room and noticed a camera. The commissioner hadn’t arrived yet, but he was sure they were being monitored.

"I hate that we had to come here," Alexander muttered.

"It would’ve only made things worse if I hadn’t come. You saw the crowd outside—if I didn’t show up today, it would’ve grown until the entire city was in chaos because of me."

"I don’t care," Alexander replied, gripping her hand firmly.

Lily sighed. "Children died, Alexander. Staff and disabled individuals lost their lives. They believe I approved the demolition of those buildings, so it's understandable they want me behind bars."

"You didn’t do it, and I won’t let you go to jail. You were sued yesterday; what’s the point of coming here when the case will be handled in court? People who oppose our family are seizing this opportunity to bring us down."

"By the time the court hearing starts, we’ll have all the evidence," Lily assured him.

"Yes, we will," Alexander said, meeting her gaze. "Every staff member who works closely with you is being questioned right now."

Lily nodded.

After some time, the commissioner and other police officials arrived. Alexander remained seated next to Lily, not bothering to stand. Lily wanted to get up and greet them, but Alexander wouldn’t let her.

“Alexander,” she scolded.

"They’re public servants; they should be the ones to greet us," he said.

Lily sighed in frustration, surprised at how petty Alexander could be. The commissioner and officers greeted them, and Lily responded with a nod while remaining seated, since Alexander insisted she not stand. Alexander, however, completely ignored their greetings.

Typically, someone in her position would be interrogated in a questioning room, but given her status as the granddaughter of Caleb Blake and wife of Alexander Kane, they dared not move her there. The detective accompanying the commissioner presented the evidence, claiming she had authorized the demolition and ordered it to be carried out in the middle of the night.

“There’s no such document,” Lily insisted. “My family founded these orphanages and foundations, which have existed for 20 years. There has never been a directive to demolish those buildings.”

"Take a look for yourself. This document was created a week before the demolition, and you signed it the day before," the inspector continued, showing them the file.

Lily and Alexander examined the document while the inspector explained. "The prosecutor’s office obtained permission to search the Blake headquarters, where they found this document among your company files, along with papers related to the orphanages and foundations. Around 70 documents were confiscated."

"We’re aware of this," Alexander said coldly. "Tell us what happens next."

The detective exchanged glances with the commissioner and the other officers, who nodded for him to proceed.

"We’re sorry to inform you, but Mrs. Kane will need to be arrested and held in jail throughout the trial, as all the documents indicate her guilt," the detective said, his voice trembling.

A heavy silence fell over the room. Everyone feared Alexander’s reaction, hoping there might be another way, but the evidence against Lily was damning.

"Where’s the arrest warrant?" Alexander finally asked, breaking the tension.

The detective handed them the warrant, stamped by higher authorities. After reviewing it, they realized that the only way Lily could avoid jail was if they presented evidence proving she hadn’t signed the document.

Lily looked at Alexander, seeing the fury in his eyes. She knew him well—he wouldn’t allow her to spend even a night in jail.

“Alexander,” she finally called his name, noticing he wasn’t saying anything.

He turned to her. “What?”

“You should leave. I’ll stay.”

Her words only fueled his anger. “And tell Viola what, exactly? That her mother is in jail?” Lily bit her lip, having momentarily forgotten about Viola.

Alexander was right. What would they tell her? She’d be expecting both parents to return home by evening, but only one would come back.

“You could say I’m on a business trip,” Lily suggested.

“For how long? The court hearing isn’t for another three weeks.”

“I won’t be there that long. Remember, we’re already investigating and gathering proof that the signature was forged.”

Alexander shook his head. “No, you’re coming home to me and Viola today. I don’t care how long it takes, but we’re staying here until our people bring evidence and my lawyers arrive.”

Lily sighed, unsure how to persuade him otherwise. The people in the office exchanged uneasy glances.

"If we don’t have evidence by the end of today, I’m afraid she’ll be transferred to a women’s prison," the detective said.

News spread quickly about Lily Kane’s arrest and Alexander Kane’s refusal to leave the police station without her. Caleb Blake, along with other family members and friends, came to visit them at the station. Meanwhile, Viola, still unaware of the situation, was at home, receiving lessons and expecting her parents to return soon.

Clara watched the little girl play in her designated play area within the estate, a sad smile on her face. A large security detail kept a close watch on her as she played with her toys and pet animals.

Ariana, in contrast, had been in high spirits since the demolition and felt elated when she heard about Lily’s arrest. But her mood soured when she learned that Alexander had chosen to stay with Lily at the police station. She couldn’t believe that, despite the overwhelming evidence, he still trusted her.

"Let’s see how long that trust lasts," Ariana muttered through gritted teeth.

Evening arrived, but there was still no evidence to prove Lily’s innocence or that the document had been falsified. For the first time in his life, Alexander felt utterly defeated. As a powerful figure with extensive influence, he was accustomed to having everything at his fingertips. He had spent years navigating the legal system, breaking people out of jail, and placing others behind bars. But now, with the person he loved most on the line, all his power seemed useless.

None of his contacts could uncover proof that the document had been forged.

“There’s still time,” Lily said.

Alexander paced angrily around the commissioner’s office. He concluded that whoever orchestrated this must be extremely clever, using a tactic he hadn’t yet discovered, as even their expert hackers couldn’t find anything.

Lily walked over to him, gently making him stop and turn to face her.

"Alexander, I’ll get out of this, but you have to trust me. If there’s no evidence by tomorrow, then I’ll go to jail."

"No, no," Alexander shook his head, refusing to accept it.

Lily placed her hands on his face, forcing him to look her in the eye. "Yes, Alexander, I’ll have to go to jail. But it’s okay because, after the court case, I’ll be proven innocent and victorious."
