Chapter 77

"What do you mean by you killed your own child? I don't understand. Which child are you referring to?"

"I was already three months pregnant when Alexander’s father caught me in bed with another man. That was part of the reason he was so devastated that he ended up in an accident," Angela’s lips quivered as tears rolled down her face.

Lilly opened her mouth to speak but then closed it, utterly shocked. Who in the world gets pregnant and then cheats on her husband? What could have driven her to such desperation? It couldn't have been for money; she married into a wealthy family. So why?

Lilly stared at her, disappointment evident in her eyes. "Why? Tell me why?"

"I'm sorry."

"I'm not the one you should apologize to."

"I know, but I was a horrible person, so I'm sorry you had to learn about someone like me and the things I did."

"I’ll ask again. Why?"

"I was desperate. I couldn’t live the life I wanted after marrying Alexander’s father and having him."

"Why couldn’t you change for the man you loved? Why couldn’t you change for Alexander, your son?"

Angela swallowed the lump in her throat. "I tried my best."

"You tried your best? And even after getting pregnant, you couldn’t control yourself? Instead, you cheated and caused the death of your husband." Lilly hadn’t planned on being so harsh, but after hearing Angela’s story, she couldn’t help it.

Angela remained silent.

"Go on, tell me, what happened to the child?"

Angela swallowed. "After my husband’s burial, the Kane family put me in prison. But they released me when they found out I was pregnant. They agreed to cover my expenses until I gave birth, on the condition that I would leave the child with them and go far away. I had already lost Alexander, who hated me for causing his father’s death. I couldn’t bear the thought of losing another child, so I decided it was better that the child was dead than for me not to be in their life. I killed my child when I was six months pregnant. I watched as the baby’s tiny eyes, heart, legs, and hands were torn apart during the abortion." Her entire body trembled as she spoke.

Lilly couldn’t believe what she was hearing. It was so cruel and heartbreaking that she couldn’t stop the tears from falling. This was the height of wickedness. When Grandma Helen told her about Angela, she had conveniently skipped this part. Perhaps she didn’t want to remember such a horrific act, which is why she didn’t speak about it. If this was Alexander’s reason for wanting her to remain in prison, then it was justified.

"This is pure evil. How could you!"

Angela wept bitterly. "I’m ready to pay for all I’ve done."

"And you will pay." Lilly stood up from the chair. "I think I’ve heard enough." She wiped her tears. She couldn’t remember the last time she cried this much. As a mother, it pained her deeply to hear of a woman killing her unborn child who was already six months along.

Angela stood up as well. "These were my past sins. I regret everything I did."

"Of course, you should! You deprived Alexander of having a sibling. If you hadn’t killed that child, maybe Alexander would have forgiven you long ago. But you dared to do such a thing."

Now Lilly understood why Alexander got so angry whenever anyone mentioned his mother and why he refused to tell her anything about Angela. Everything about her was too horrible to recount. Now she understood why he wanted his grandparents to adopt Kate, to fill the sibling void in his heart and life that his mother had created.

"I'm sure Alexander must have had some hope when he learned he was going to be an older brother, but you crushed that tiny bit of joy and hope by killing his unborn sibling! The least you could have done was leave the child with the Kane family. It’s only right that the child would have grown up with them and Alexander rather than have a mother like you!"

"Tell me the truth. The real reason you killed your unborn child was that you didn’t want another child to despise you as Alexander did, isn’t that right?" When Lilly saw Angela look away and cry even harder, she knew she had hit the truth.

"I guess you should get used to staying here until Alexander decides to forgive you."

"I don’t mind staying here for the rest of my life since I deserve it, but all I ask is to see my son, even if it’s just for a few minutes. I need him to know how much I regret everything I’ve done and to ask for his forgiveness," Angela sobbed.

Lilly sighed.

"Please," Angela knelt in front of her and clutched her legs. "Please, I beg you. You’re the only one who can make him change his mind. You’re the only one who can get him to see me. Please."

Lilly’s clothes were stained with Angela’s tears. "Alright, I’ll see what I can do. Just stand up."

Angela stood up and wiped her tears. "Thank you," she said, hugging Lilly.

"I’m leaving now."

Angela nodded. "Alright. Thank you so much for agreeing to see me, Lilly."

"You’re welcome."

Lilly knocked on the door, and the prison guards who had escorted her opened it.

"Are you done talking?" the female prison guard asked.

"Yes, it’s time for me to go."

Angela smiled at her as she walked out the door. She hoped Alexander would come to see her soon.

After leaving the prison and changing into different clothes with a hoodie, Lilly crossed to the other side of the road and walked towards the car waiting a short distance away.

Lilly got into the front seat, and Sarah, who was in the driver’s seat, started the car and drove away.

Sarah glanced at Lilly, whose eyes were red from crying. "What happened in there?"

"A lot. There was so much information that brought me to tears. That woman has done so much harm and damage."

"Do you want to talk about it now or later?"

"I’ll give you the full story later."

"Okay, but tell me, why did she want to meet with you?"

"Because she says she wants to meet Alexander. She said he’s refused to see her for 18 years now. She wants to beg for his forgiveness."

"Well, how do you plan to convince Alexander?"

"I think I should first deal with the storm that’s coming."

"I’m sure he already knows by now and is on his way here."

"Yes, I’m afraid of what he’s going to do."

Sarah smiled. "Alexander loves you so much. I’ve seen how much he loves you these past three years, so he’ll surely forgive you for doing this behind his back."

"That’s after he teaches me a lesson."

Sarah laughed. "Gosh, I wish I could be there to see how he’s going to punish you."

"He warned me before I came here. Alexander was dead serious this time. It’s not going to be like any other punishment he’s given before."

Sarah said nothing else and just drove. "Since there was no need for plan B, do you still have plan C in mind?"

"Yes, I’m done here. Take me to the airport."

"Aren’t you going to say goodbye to Michael and Jacob? They called to know where you were."

"Just tell them something urgent came up, so I had to go back home."

"Okay."

"Are my things in the car trunk?"

"Yes."

"Thank you for helping me, Sarah. What would I have done without you?"

Lilly smiled at her.

"You’re welcome," Sarah smiled back.

Soon, Lilly boarded the plane back to Aurora City, and just ten hours after she left, Alexander arrived in G City with his private jet.

He had gotten the information late that Lilly had actually gone to see his mother. Now it was clear to him why she had asked about her last time; she had planned on visiting his mother.

How dare she go behind his back like this? In his anger, he ordered his people to prepare the jet and flew to G City, unaware that Lilly had already left.

"Give me her location," he demanded, his voice filled with anger.

"Sir, the thing is..." James hesitated.

"What is it?"

"Ma’am already returned home. According to the information I got, she arrived in Aurora City about an hour ago." Alexander clenched his fist. "How smart of her."

"Sir, I just received another update. Ma’am has packed her things and Viola’s and is on her way to the Blake family residence right now as we speak."

Alexander’s face darkened.

Was she trying to escape her punishment? How dare she leave his house!
