Chapter 54

Bella rushed out of the elevator, pushing past employees who greeted her, curious about her urgency. She burst into her daughter’s office, startling Kate, who looked up in surprise.

"Mom, what are you doing here?" Kate asked.

Bella stormed over and pulled Kate up, surprising her. "Why are you pulling me? What's going on?"

"We need to leave," Bella insisted.

"What do you mean we need to leave? And let go of my hand, Mom."

Bella released her and started pacing anxiously. Seeing her mother so distressed, Kate sensed something was seriously wrong. "What’s the matter, Mom?"

"We need to leave," Bella repeated, turning to face her.

"Leave? What do you mean?"

"The person I hired to eliminate the gang leader reported back that he’s missing, which means Alexander already has him. Plus, I just received word from the people watching the assassin—they said he was taken by some men, and I’m sure it’s Alexander’s people."

"What!!" Kate exclaimed.

"Keep your voice down," Bella admonished.

Kate lowered her voice. "You mean he already knows we killed Lilly's sisters and caused his sister’s accident?" Kate felt a surge of fear.

"Yes, so we need to leave immediately."

"Leave? Where to?"

"What do you mean where to? We have to flee the country before he comes for us. It's just a matter of time. I’ll instruct one of our most trusted maids to bring our valuables to a specific location, then we need to withdraw all the money we have in our personal accounts and leave the country by ship. I’ve already contacted someone." Kate felt a cold dread wash over her; she was going to abandon everything, including her position.

"Come on, let’s go now," Bella urged, grabbing Kate’s hand to drag her out, but Kate didn't move. Bella turned, seeing her daughter deep in thought. "Kate!!" she screamed. "There’s no time to dwell on what you’re leaving behind by running away. If we don’t leave, we’re dead!" she reminded her.

Kate looked at her mother with a pale expression. "Is there no other way?"

"Not for now. The only way to save ourselves is by fleeing."

Kate nodded rigidly while Bella proceeded to drag her out of the company using a different exit.

"I’ll visit you every day, Sandra. Goodbye," Lilly said to Sandra from outside the room. The doctor had mentioned that her condition was improving and soon she might leave the ICU; they just had to wait for her to wake up from her coma.

Alexander looked at his sister tenderly. "Get well soon, Sandra. I promise that by the time you wake up, the people responsible for this will pay with their lives."

Lilly could see the anger in his eyes and placed her hand around Alexander’s to comfort him.

Alexander’s phone rang, but he ignored the call.

"It might be important," Lilly suggested, prompting him to answer it. He saw it was James calling.

"What is it?"

"They found out we captured the gang leader and have the assassin. They're planning to escape the country illegally," James reported, informed by one of their sources inside Kate’s company.

Alexander frowned and glanced at Lilly, who had a questioning look upon seeing his expression.

"Your stepmother and stepsister are planning to flee."

"What?" Lilly disliked the news, especially now that he was finally going to make them pay. If they escaped, they wouldn’t be held accountable for their crimes.

"I’ll send the driver and some of my men to take you to see your grandfather. Let him follow you to the base after you’ve told him the truth. By then, we would have caught them," Alexander assured.

"Okay, promise me you’ll catch them," Lilly said.

"There’s no way for them to escape," Alexander kissed her forehead. "Please stay safe," he pleaded.

"I will," Lilly smiled at him and watched as he left the hospital to meet James.

Lilly sighed, worried, and prayed everything would fall into place. After being discharged, she headed to the Blake estate to see her grandfather, whom she had already informed of her visit.

"Welcome, Young Miss," Victor greeted as Lilly stepped into the house.

"Thank you, uncle," Lilly smiled at him. "Where is Grandfather?"

"He’s waiting for you."

"Okay," Lilly followed him to her grandfather’s study room.

As they neared the study room, Lilly stopped walking. Victor noticed and turned back.

"Is there a problem, Young Miss?" he asked, seeing the worried look on Lilly’s face.

"You can go back, Victor. I’ll go in on my own."

Victor nodded and left, but he sensed something was wrong.

Lilly took a deep breath to prepare for what she was about to tell her grandfather. She walked to the door, knocked, and heard her grandfather’s voice before entering.

Caleb was seated at his desk, writing on a scroll as usual. "Good day, Grandfather," Lilly greeted with a bow.

Caleb looked up with a smile, set down his ink pen, and walked over to embrace Lilly, surprising her. Lilly hadn't expected a hug, but she had missed her grandfather's tender embrace, and it made her feel emotional.

Caleb released her and examined her face tenderly. "You still look unwell. Why didn’t you go home and rest instead of coming all the way here?" he scolded gently.

Lilly smiled a bit. "There’s something I needed to tell you first."

"Hmmm, what might that be? If you came all the way here, it must be important."

"Yes, it’s important, Grandfather." Caleb saw her serious expression and knew the matter was grave.

"Let's sit over here," he said, sitting down on a wooden chair and gesturing for Lilly to sit opposite him with a table in between. Caleb poured tea for both of them.

Lilly bowed her head before drinking.

"So, what’s troubling you?" Caleb asked.

Lilly swallowed hard. "I don’t know how to say it or the best way to tell you."

"What’s bothering you, my child?"

The tears she had been holding back finally fell. "Grandfather...." her voice cracked.

Caleb’s expression changed. "What is it?" he asked seriously.

"My sisters and mother were both killed by..."

"You know who killed them?"

Lilly nodded. "All this time I’ve been investigating, and right now, as we speak, I have their assassin locked up at one of Alexander’s bases."
