Chapter 22
If she didn’t go upstairs to change, she wouldn’t be leaving the house anytime soon, and she was tired of arguing with him. Lilly sighed, stood up, and took the elevator to the top floor. Since they were heading to the hospital, she selected a loose red dress that fell just above her knees, paired it with dark, small-heeled shoes, and grabbed a black bag. She let her long, blonde hair cascade down to her waist, adding to her radiant appearance.
Back downstairs, she was informed that Alexander was waiting for her in the car. As soon as she got in, he gave her a once-over, from head to toe, and seemed satisfied with her appearance.
They arrived at Highland Hospital and proceeded to the Obstetrics and Gynecology department, heading straight to the office of Richard, whom Lilly knew had been informed of their visit. Richard was one of the few friends of Alexander that Lilly had met. She knew through Jacob's investigation that Alexander had another close friend who was often abroad, and one more whom she hadn’t met yet.
"Nice to see you again, Ms. Evans," Richard greeted her with a hug, which she returned with a smile. "Same here."
Richard studied her for a moment. "You look different."
Lilly nodded with a smile. "Mm-hmm."
"So, what's the good news?" Richard turned to Alexander. "You told me you were bringing her to the hospital, and I’ve been curious to know why."
Alexander, seated on the couch with his legs crossed, didn’t bother to respond. Seeing his reluctance, Lilly spoke up. "I’m pregnant."
"Wow! Congratulations to you both!" Richard exclaimed, hugging her again. "I can’t believe the man of steel is going to be a father."
"Thank you," Lilly said, glancing at Alexander, who was now watching her intently.
"I want you to have one of the female doctors run all the necessary tests and bring me the results," Alexander instructed Richard, who seemed far more excited.
"Of course, of course. Come on, let me introduce you to the doctor who will be taking care of you throughout your pregnancy," Richard said, emphasizing the importance of the baby.
They made their way to the office of Dr. Elena, who was on a call. She ended the call and turned to greet them.
"Hey, Richard."
"Hey, Elena," Richard replied, giving her a peck on the lips, signaling to Lilly that there was something more between them.
"And who is this?" Elena asked, smiling at the beautiful young woman with long, blonde hair.
"Alexander’s wife, Lilly Evans," Richard introduced.
"Wow," Elena’s smile widened as she walked over to Lilly, holding her hands. "I’m pleased to finally meet you. Richard has told me so much about you."
"Nice to meet you too," Lilly smiled back.
"Elena is not only a doctor but also my girlfriend," Richard added.
"I had a feeling there was something between you two," Lilly said, smiling. "You have a pretty and talented girlfriend."
"I know I do," Richard said, looking at Elena with love, making her blush. "I hope we can be friends, too, apart from being your doctor."
"Of course," Lilly replied. She liked Elena’s personality and thought they would get along well.
Elena became excited at the prospect. However, the phone rang, and she received an emergency call about one of her patients, so she had to rush out, promising to return soon.
"Let’s sit and chat while we wait for her," Richard suggested. "We should get to know each other better."
Lilly agreed and sat down. Since Richard was a close friend of Alexander, he might know some valuable things about him.
Richard smiled. "So, tell me about yourself, Lilly. Alexander never tells me anything."
Lilly shared a bit about herself—how she was an orphan, grew up alone, and now owned a coffee shop. She only managed to finish high school, information Alexander already knew.
"You speak and carry yourself like someone with a higher education," Richard admitted, impressed.
Lilly smiled. She actually had two master’s degrees in business relations and accounting, but now wasn’t the time to reveal her true background.
"And you have an aura that’s different from other women. You act like someone born with a silver spoon in her mouth, which I can relate to," Richard continued.
"Thanks to the effort I put into grooming myself," Lilly replied with a smile.
Richard studied her closely before nodding. "You’re Alexander’s close friend, so you must be aware of his father's memorial that happened two days ago," Lilly said, wanting to confirm something.
"Yes," Richard relaxed in his chair.
"He wasn’t present, and his grandmother told me why he never attends his father’s memorial," Lilly stated.
Richard sighed. "Yes, I have no idea where he goes on that day. He’s neither at work nor anywhere else. Sometimes he takes a business trip to distract himself. Attending the memorial brings back painful memories."
"Is his mother still alive?" Lilly asked, sensing a sensitive topic.
"She’s dead to them. That’s all I can say," Richard replied, clearly uncomfortable.
Lilly knew Richard didn’t want to discuss it further. "His mother being the cause of his father’s death is the reason he decided never to be with any woman until his Grandfather's Will was read," she ventured.
"That’s what his family thinks, but it’s not the only reason," Richard revealed.
Lilly was surprised. "There’s another reason?"
Richard leaned forward. "Yes, because nine years ago, Alexander gave love a chance."
