Chapter 25
If she were to lie, he would find out. Her only choice was to offer a partial truth. She could see that he was growing frustrated with her silence, so she said, "He’s not a friend; he was my former lover."
"Pull over the car," Alexander ordered, and the driver stopped abruptly in the middle of nowhere. All the other escort vehicles followed suit and stopped as well. Frank exited the car and climbed into one of the security vehicles.
Confused about their sudden stop, Lilly asked, "Why have we stopped?" Alexander shot her a cold stare and asked, "When you say he was your ex, does that mean he was your boyfriend before?"
"Yes," she answered.
"How could you have had a relationship with him if this is his first visit to Country A?"
"That’s because I had previously traveled to another country!"
He took hold of her hand with a firm grip. "You visited Country C?"
"Yes, I did," she said as she tried to free her hand. "Let go of me," she insisted.
Alexander’s grip tightened even more before easing slightly. "You need to explain why you went to Country C and why you kept that information from me."
"I don’t see why I need to explain," she said defiantly.
Alexander frowned. He had conducted a thorough check on her when they first got married and found nothing suspicious, yet now she was mentioning a past visit to Country C. His eyes were intense as he said, "You’d better tell me what I don’t know, or there will be consequences for you."
"The contract specifies that you are not to interfere in my personal matters, and I am not to interfere in yours," she argued.
Alexander’s grip tightened painfully, making her wince. "Not when it’s something important for me to know, especially since he was your first," he said, remembering that she was not a virgin when they met.
"Please, you’re hurting me," Lilly pleaded. He finally released her and signaled for Frank to return to the car. Frank drove them back to the mansion.
Once they arrived, Lilly quickly got out and headed inside in a fit of anger. Clara greeted her with a warm smile, "Welcome back, ma’am. How did it go?"
"It went well," Lilly replied with a sigh, thinking about the events of the evening. Clara noticed the bruises on Lilly’s wrist and asked, "Oh my, what happened to your wrist?"
At that moment, Alexander entered the room.
"Let me treat that for you," Clara said, moving to help.
"No, it’s fine," Lilly said curtly as she went to the elevator.
Clara watched her leave and then faced Alexander. "Welcome back, Sir," she said, bowing her head.
Alexander acknowledged her greeting with a nod before heading to the elevator. He went down to the basement, switched on the lights, and began practicing shooting at a target with one of the guns from the shelf.
While he was busy, Lilly sent a message to Jacob and the others. "There’s a problem."
They all responded, asking for details. Lilly explained that during dinner with Alexander, Albert appeared, and she had to reveal to Alexander that they had been in a relationship and that she had traveled to Country C.
Michael: "What else has he discovered?"
Lilly: "Just that."
Jacob: "If he hasn’t uncovered anything more, I can quickly put a stop to their investigation."
Lilly: "Yes, please do. Just make sure not to reveal that I spent time with Albert during our relationship."
Michael: "But that would mean exposing that you studied there."
Jacob: "I can disguise the fact that she studied there and replace it with something else."
Lilly: "That’s fine."
Sarah: "Even if you manage this, you know you’ll have to come clean eventually, right?"
Lilly read Sarah’s message and thought about it. Michael: "So you’re suggesting she should reveal everything?"
Sarah: "Exactly."
Michael: "No, she can’t do that yet because it would reveal too much about her past. She can’t tell him now, not until we have enough evidence against her stepmother and stepsister."
Sarah: "Revealing the truth doesn’t mean everyone will know. Alexander is a private person, and since she is carrying his child, he will protect her."
Michael: "Lilly, you’re expecting a baby!!" Jacob: "Oh my God!"
They were all taken aback. Only Sarah knew about this, and she hadn’t told the others. Michael: "Lilly?" He was confused about why she would become pregnant at this time and wondered if there was more to her story.
Sarah: "Oh no, I thought they were already aware?" She bit her lip nervously.
Lilly stared at the chat, occasionally glancing at the door to see if Alexander would enter. The chat was quiet as they awaited her response.
Lilly then typed, "Let’s meet tomorrow at my old place at noon," and went offline.
The others saw her message and sighed. Alexander didn’t return to the room, so she ended up sleeping alone. She wouldn’t be surprised if she was moved to a different room the next day.
The next morning, Lilly noticed that her bruised wrist had been bandaged, which made her smile. The other side of the bed was empty, but the disheveled state of the sheets indicated that Alexander had been there.
After getting dressed, she went downstairs for breakfast and was surprised to find that Alexander hadn’t gone to the office. He hadn’t left yesterday either. Was he waiting for her to come down?
Alexander was sitting at the table, engrossed in his tablet, not working on any documents or reading the news, with a coffee cup in front of him. Lilly sat down at the table without a word, still irritated by the injury to her wrist.
Alexander looked up from his tablet, frowning.
"Good morning, ma’am," Clara greeted as she served breakfast.
"Good morning, Clara," Lilly said with a smile. "Thanks for taking care of my wrist yesterday."
Clara was confused. "What do you mean, ma’am?"
"Aren’t you the one who bandaged my wrist?"
Clara glanced at the bandaged wrist and shook her head. "No, ma’am, I didn’t do it," she said, looking at Alexander, who was now frowning.
To clear up any misunderstandings, Clara began to explain, "Ma’am, the truth is that Mr. Kane—"
"You can go now, Clara," Alexander interrupted.
Clara bowed and left the room. Lilly turned to Alexander, seeing that his frown had deepened. She knew he had bandaged her wrist and had thanked Clara to provoke him.
"Did I do something wrong, Mr. Kane?" she asked, trying to appear innocent.
His frown deepened. "You’ve made many mistakes," he thought to himself. He tossed an invitation towards her.
Lilly picked it up, puzzled. "What is this for?"
"You will be attending a banquet with me in a week," he said.
"Why? Don’t you usually go to these events alone?" she asked.
"Yes, but this time you will accompany me. It is a special occasion: the 80th birthday celebration for the head of the Lawrence family."
The Lawrence family was one of the three most influential families in Aurora City, making this event far from ordinary. The media would cover it, and her family would learn she was alive if she went.
"Why do I need to go?" she asked.
"Because I plan to publicly announce our marriage to everyone," he said.
