Chapter 34

"The boss has ordered us to prevent you from leaving the house."

"When exactly did he give this order?" She had been inside for days, so why this now?

"Since he left on his trip."

It had been over a week since he went away, and now she felt like a prisoner. Lilly was infuriated; she had finally decided to step out after staying in for so long, intending to meet up with Sarah and the others, only to discover she was barred from leaving.

Lilly went back to her room and quickly called him. She hadn't seen or heard from him since that night and hadn't tried to contact him until now. The phone rang once but wasn't answered. On the second attempt, someone picked up.

"Hello, this is Alexander Kane’s assistant. Who’s calling?" Lilly checked her phone to ensure she hadn’t accidentally called James instead of Alexander. Seeing no mistake, she furrowed her brows. Why was James answering instead of Alexander? Was he ignoring her?

"May I speak with Mr. Kane?"

"Oh, Miss Evans... I mean, Miss Blake," James corrected himself.

"Please put Mr. Kane on the phone."

"Mr. Kane is..." James glanced at his boss, who was engrossed in something on his tablet. "Hold on, Miss Blake, let me check if he’s available."

His boss had instructed him to notify him whenever she called, so he had to do that first, or there would be consequences.

"Sir," James called.

"What is it?" Alexander replied, still typing on his laptop.

"It’s Miss Evans... I mean, Miss Blake." After discovering that the woman he thought owned a coffee shop and married his boss was actually the heir to the Blake empire, James didn’t dare call her Miss Evans anymore.

Alexander stopped typing the moment he heard her name. "Give me the phone," he said, reaching out.

"What’s the purpose of this call?" he asked.

Her heart raced upon hearing his voice. They hadn’t spoken since that day, and hearing him made her heart pound. If Alexander never loved her back, could she ever stop loving him? she wondered.

"Do you want to speak, or should I end the call?"

"I..." She took a deep breath. "Mr. Kane, why am I not allowed to leave the house? I've been indoors ever since you left, and now I can't go out. Am I a prisoner?"

He had been informed by his bodyguards that she had tried to leave after being indoors for ten days. "You are not leaving the house until I say so."

Lilly frowned. "I’m going to step out today." She challenged him, determined to leave regardless of his orders.

Alexander’s expression turned icy. "If you dare to leave, wait and see what I’ll do," he threatened.

Lilly scoffed. "You’re not here to carry out your threats. I will leave, and no one, not even the guards, can stop me," she said stubbornly.

Alexander clenched his fist. After her lies and deceit, she dared to act defiant. "If you leave, just wait and see," he warned.

"I’m leaving," she said before hanging up and heading out.

Alexander stared at the phone for five minutes before it rang again.

"Speak."

"Sir, Miss Evans has forced her way out of the house."

"Forced? Did you touch her?!"

"N-no, sir. She just decided to leave," the guard stammered, terrified by his boss’s angry tone. He had strictly told them not to touch her, even if she tried to leave, as he intended to handle her himself.

Alexander hung up.

He had been reading every detail about her on his tablet, from her birth to the present, and even discovered her relationship with Albert Lee during her second master’s program. She had dated him for nearly a year. He hadn’t obtained this information earlier because she had used a hacker to block his efforts. He could have found out more using other means, but he hadn’t bothered.

If her sisters were murdered and she had hidden away because she was the next target, now that her identity was public, whoever killed her sisters would come after her. She knew she wasn’t safe, yet she dared to leave while he was away.

"James."

"Yes, boss?"

"Cancel the meeting. We’re going home."
