Chapter 51
Grandma Helen stood outside the intensive care unit, watching over Sandra who was fighting for her life. A transparent glass panel allowed her to see Sandra lying on the bed, hooked up to various machines. Grandma Helen pressed her hand against the glass, tears streaming down her face. "Sandra," she whispered, wiping her eyes.
Camila gazed at the young woman struggling for survival. "Please recover soon, young miss," she murmured. It was hard to believe that just two months after returning to the country, Miss Sandra would be in this condition.
Standing a short distance away, Mr. Blake had just visited his granddaughter, who remained unresponsive. He was about to leave the hospital when he was reminded about Alexander's sister, who had been hit by a car instead of his granddaughter. Upon learning that his granddaughter had been the intended target, he had immediately dispatched his people to investigate.
The thought that his granddaughter could have been in Sandra's position, or worse, lost her life and that of her unborn child, made Caleb clench his fists. "How is the investigation progressing? Any leads?" he inquired.
"Our team is still searching. The mastermind is adept at covering his tracks."
Caleb sighed. "Mmmm."
James glanced at the young woman in the ICU with sympathy. "Sir, what did the doctor say about her condition?" he asked, having seen the old master consult the doctor about Sandra.
"The doctor said it would take a miracle for her to wake up."
"Hmm," James responded. "And what about Lilly?"
"Regarding Lilly, the doctor said she alone can decide to wake up. She keeps mentioning the young woman's name."
"I want you to inform the hospital that we will cover her medical expenses from now on," Caleb instructed.
"You mean Miss Sandra?"
"Yes, and also Lilly's."
"Sir, knowing Alexander, he won't agree to let you pay their bills," James pointed out.
"You're right. He's too proud and stubborn to accept my help."
James hesitated before speaking. "Sir, your son came to see Lilly but wasn't allowed to."
Caleb turned to his right-hand man. "What do you mean he wasn't allowed to see her?"
"From what I gathered, Alexander had instructed that you're the only family member permitted to see her."
Caleb frowned. He knew that Lilly had a strained relationship with her father and must have confided in Alexander, but that shouldn't warrant barring her father from visiting. "When did this happen?"
"This morning. Mr. Peter came with Bella and Kate, but they weren't allowed to see the young miss. According to our source, there was an altercation between Alexander and Peter."
"Hmmm, James, I want you to get to the bottom of this. Alexander wouldn't act without reason."
"Yes, sir."
Kate and her mother sat in her room, deep in thought. "How did we fail, mother? Lilly is still alive. How did those people mess up such a simple task?" Kate fumed.
By now, Lilly should have been dead, but she wasn't. The baby she carried was also still alive. One thing that troubled her was Alexander's hatred for her. She remembered the loathing in his eyes when they visited Lilly in the hospital. He had even clashed with her father, declaring that they weren't allowed to visit Lilly because of their poor relationship with her.
"Mother, we need to act fast. As long as Lilly is alive, Alexander will continue to despise me. If she's gone, I can get close to him," Kate said, receiving no response from her mother.
Bella was lost in thought.
"Mother!!" Kate called again.
"Shut up!!" Bella snapped, making Kate flinch. "Can you be any more foolish? Don't you realize the trouble we're in right now?" She glared at her daughter. "Right now, you shouldn't be thinking about eliminating Lilly. We need to cover our tracks."
Bella continued, "Alexander is investigating what happened, and so is your grandfather. Didn't you see the hatred in Alexander's eyes? He suspects us and is probably looking for evidence to prove it before he comes after us."
"Don't you understand that if Alexander discovers we were behind his sister's coma, he'll kill us? You have no idea what he's capable of, Kate. He's the king of the underworld, and few know his true potential. Alexander can eliminate you without leaving a trace. You need to stop fantasizing about being with him and focus on how we can eliminate those we hired so it can't be traced back to us," Bella said through gritted teeth.
Realizing the gravity of their situation, Kate grew frightened. "What are we going to do?"
"I need to hire someone to kill the gang leader before Alexander or your grandfather gets to him. We have to act quickly to avoid getting caught," Bella replied.
