Chapter 70
She had spoken to her grandfather the day before, and although he had returned to the office, he hadn't mentioned that he was the head of BSC and intended for them to collaborate. Was this his way of mending their relationship by withholding information? Her grandfather, however, didn’t see the need to share this with her. She slowly scrolled through the tablet, reading about his role as chairman of BSC, a company dealing with construction. According to the information, he had founded the company from scratch in France three months after leaving their home country. She continued reading, taking in all the details.
Lilly handed the tablet back to Karina, who stood nearby.
"What will you do now, ma'am?" Karina asked.
"Arrange a meeting with them for tomorrow," Lilly replied.
"Okay, I'll do that right away. Anything else you need?"
"Reschedule my last meeting to 5 PM. I have dinner plans with friends who just returned to the country."
"Got it. I'll take care of it."
Lilly turned to Adam. "Review their project proposal and note any changes we might request during tomorrow's meeting."
"Understood," Adam said before leaving the office.
Both Karina and Adam could sense their boss's displeasure with the news she had received.
After attending her final meeting of the day, Lilly returned to her office to prepare for her dinner date with Michael and Jacob, who had just returned to the country. As she gathered her belongings, she received a call from her father but chose to ignore it, not ready to speak with him until their meeting.
Was she upset that he owned a new company and wanted to collaborate? No, what angered her was his decision to keep his intentions from her, opting for secrecy. If he wanted to keep things professional, so would she.
After giving Karina her final instructions, Lilly took the elevator down to the underground garage, where Pedro and Roland were waiting for her in the car. For three years, they had been her bodyguards. Despite Alexander's suggestion to replace them, Lilly insisted on keeping them, having grown accustomed to their presence.
"Good day, ma'am," they greeted in unison.
"Good day, Pedro and Roland," she replied with a smile.
"Where to next, ma'am?" Pedro asked.
"I have a dinner date with Michael and Jacob," Lilly informed them, knowing they were familiar with her friends. She gave them the location, and soon they were on their way.
Halfway to the restaurant, her phone rang. Seeing Alexander's name on the screen, she smiled and answered the call.
"Alexander."
"Where are you going?" was his immediate question.
Lilly glanced at Pedro and Roland in the front seats. Clearly, someone had informed Alexander of her movements, but it wasn't them.
"You left the office. Where are you headed?" he pressed.
So he had people watching her again. He always did this for safety reasons. The last time was when she was newly appointed as the president of the Blake Group, but she had made him stop. Now he was doing it again.
"Are you monitoring me again? Why?" she finally asked. Was something happening that she didn’t know about? He usually did this when he felt she was in danger.
The line was silent, and all she could hear was his sigh.
"Alexander," she called. "Is something wrong?"
"No, nothing is wrong."
"Is Viola with you at the office?"
Alexander looked at Viola, sleeping in his resting room. "Yes, she’s sleeping. She must be exhausted from her day at school."
"Okay."
"You still haven't told me where you're going," he said more seriously.
"Michael and Jacob are back, so I have a dinner date with them," she said excitedly, happy to see her friends after a year apart.
He was silent again.
"Alexander, are you still there?"
"Mmm," was his only response.
Alexander still didn’t like Jacob and Michael because they were men. He had once said he should be the only man she was close to, both as a husband and a friend.
"You don’t like it, do you?"
"Are you really asking that? You know I don’t," Alexander replied.
Lilly bit her bottom lip. "They’re like family. Why can’t you see it that way?"
"I can’t."
"Stop being jealous."
"I can’t help it."
Lilly smiled. "You love that I do, don’t you?"
"Well, a little," she admitted.
She heard him chuckle.
"Don't stay out too long. Be home by 7 PM."
Lilly looked at her watch. It was already 6 PM. How did he expect her to be home by 7 PM? Was she supposed to spend only ten minutes with Michael and Jacob?
"But 7 PM is too early. It's already 6 PM, and I haven't even reached our meeting place."
"Fine, get home by 8 PM," he conceded before hanging up.
"You wish," she murmured. She planned to stay out until 9 PM since it had been so long since she last saw them.
Upon arriving at the luxury restaurant, she was immediately directed to the reserved floor. She felt as if someone had followed her as she entered the hotel.
Taking the elevator to the third floor, she walked into the restaurant and quickly located the reserved table. She kept her eyes on the entrance to see if anyone followed her, but no one did. She was certain someone had trailed her.
Deciding to focus on her evening, Lilly ordered a glass of water while she waited. Ten minutes later, Michael and Jacob walked in, and she rushed to greet them.
Unable to contain her excitement, she hugged them both tightly. Socialites who recognized her began taking photos, particularly of her embrace with Michael. Unbeknownst to her, the images quickly spread online.
