Chapter 72

Lily was taken aback by the news that Alexander was keeping his mother in prison. She scrutinized the woman before her, unsure whether to believe her claims about Angela being incarcerated. Although no one, including Alexander, had ever mentioned his mother's whereabouts, she never imagined prison would be where she was.

"How do I know you're telling the truth?" Lily questioned.

"It's Amanda," the woman replied.

"Alright, Amanda, how do I know you're not lying or have some other motive?" Lily pressed.

"Why would I travel all the way from G City to Aurora City just to tell a lie instead of being with my family?" Amanda said seriously.

Lily examined her closely, seeing sincerity in her eyes. "You mentioned you came from G City. Were you imprisoned there?"

"Yes, that's where Angela is too," Amanda confirmed.

Lily nodded. "What do you mean by Alexander keeping her in prison?"

Amanda pulled a piece of paper from her pocket and handed it to Lily. "It's a letter she asked me to give you. She couldn't write it herself because she's under constant surveillance. While others in prison have some freedoms, she is only allowed to labor, eat, sleep, and read about her son in newspapers and magazines. Alexander ensures she can't call, be visited, or send letters."

Lily looked at the paper. "So you wrote this after getting out?"

Amanda nodded. "Yes, but these are her words to you." Lily opened the letter and read:

"HELLO, LILY. I'M ANGELA, ALEXANDER'S MOTHER. I WOULD LOVE TO MEET WITH YOU."

Lily checked both sides but found nothing else written. "That's it?"

"Yes."

"She wants us to meet?"

"Yes."

"But you said no one can visit her."

"You'll go in as a prison warden. In about five days, new wardens will be added in the women's prison in G City, and you'll be one of them to see her."

"Did she tell you why she wanted to meet?"

"I was close to her in prison, so yes, she told me why and everything that happened. She helped me when I first arrived, and we became close. Her sentence was 15 years, and she should have been released three years ago, but Alexander ensured she stayed."

"Alexander did that?" Lily was shocked. She knew how ruthless her husband could be but didn't realize he was this heartless.

"Yes, we all witnessed it. She was ready to leave one Friday morning, said her goodbyes, but then learned her sentence had been extended. She was devastated. Angela talked about her son constantly and wished for him to find a good woman and start a family. She regretted her past actions every single day. I wish her son could give her a break; she has paid for her crimes."

Lily listened, seeing the pain and sadness in Amanda's eyes as she spoke. She couldn't believe what she was hearing.

"So please, see her. She doesn't know how long she'll be in prison, but she wants to meet her daughter-in-law, the woman Alexander loves," Amanda said with a smile. "She was thrilled when she found out you got married and even happier when you had Viola."

Amanda continued, "She warned me to be careful and make sure Alexander doesn't find out about this meeting because he's very protective of you. From the moment I followed your car, I saw people watching you. Even here, in this restaurant, you're being watched. I used to do such work, so I can tell when someone is being observed. I'm sure they'll come knocking on this door soon."

As if on cue, there was a knock on the door. Lily looked at it in surprise, then back at Amanda.

"I told you, they're here because you've been in here a long time," Amanda said.

"Who is it?" Lily called out.

"It's me, ma'am," Pedro replied. He was supposed to be downstairs, so how did he know she was in the restroom? This confirmed what Amanda said.

"Aren't you supposed to be on the ground floor?"

"I came up a few minutes ago to ask when we're leaving and was told you were here. The boss informed us to take you home; it's already 8 PM."

Lily checked her watch. It was indeed 8. "I'll be out soon."

"Okay, ma'am, I'll wait in the car."

"How will I get in touch with you?" Lily asked.

"We can't call, but my email is Amanda... Our email conversations will be anonymous. I need to leave now."

"It's best I go first," Lily suggested.

"Yes, that's true."

Lily opened the door and walked out of the restroom. She returned to the restaurant to inform Michael and Jacob she was leaving.

"You took so long that we finished our meals, and yours is cold," Jacob remarked.

"Seems the conversation was lengthy," Michael noted.

"Yes, it was," she replied, sitting down and taking a sip of water.

"Do you want me to ask them to warm your food?" Jacob asked.

"No, I have to leave now."

"Why the sudden departure?"

"It's already 8 PM; it's getting late."

"Are you okay, Lily?" Michael asked, noticing her mood had shifted.

"I'm fine," she smiled.

"Okay then, we'll talk on the phone or visit you at work tomorrow."

"Alright, I'll leave now," Lily said, grabbing her handbag and leaving the restaurant.

Michael watched her go, feeling something was off. She had spent a lot of time in the restroom.
