Chapter 36
Where was he planning to take her?
"Get ready, I don't have all day."
Lilly ascended the stairs to change into a more fitting outfit. Unsure of their destination, she opted for a white trouser suit paired with a silk long-sleeved cream blouse, tucking in one side to add a stylish touch. She complemented her look with modest black heels and a black Birkin bag. Lilly let her blonde hair cascade down her back and shoulders. Pleased with her reflection, she felt ready for any formal or casual occasion. She then picked up the bandage Rosa had bought for her the previous evening. Rosa had offered to help bandage her wrist, but Lilly declined.
Returning to the dining room, she found Alexander reading a newspaper.
"I'm ready."
Alexander set the paper aside and glanced at her from head to toe.
"Why isn't your wrist bandaged?"
Lilly walked up to him, placed the bandage nearby, and extended her hand. "Why don't you do it for me, Mr. Kane?"
Alexander looked at the bandage, then at her bruised wrist. He picked it up and carefully bandaged her hand.
Lilly smiled, looking at her bandaged wrist.
Alexander stood up. "Let's go."
She followed him to the car, and they left the estate. She only realized their destination when they arrived at his company's headquarters. Alexander had brought her to work. Relieved that she had chosen an appropriate outfit, she followed him closely with bodyguards surrounding them.
Suddenly, reporters appeared, and the bodyguards blocked them from getting too close.
"Mr. Kane is here, and with him is his wife, Lilly Blake," one reporter announced to the camera.
"What was your reason for marrying Lilly Blake? To unite both families and strengthen their power?"
"Or did you marry her to gain your grandfather's property meant for charity?"
"Lilly, why did you disappear after your sisters died? Did you feel responsible for their deaths?"
At the mention of her sisters, Lilly's eyes snapped to the reporter who asked the question.
"You used a fake name, Lilly Evans, and married Mr. Kane under that alias. Why? Doesn't that make you a fraud?"
Lilly became lost in thought due to the provocative questions, but Alexander suddenly grabbed her hand and pulled her close as they walked into the building, shielded by bodyguards. Security prevented the reporters from entering the premises. Inside the elevator, Lilly looked at their intertwined hands.
She pulled her hand away and stared straight ahead.
Alexander frowned at her.
"Did you know the reporters would be there? Is this your way of getting back at me for lying to you?"
Alexander's face turned cold. He grabbed her hand, making her face him. "What did you just say?"
"Why were there suddenly reporters? How did they know I was coming with you unless you told them?" Although the reporters had questioned Alexander, her queries were more intense.
Seeing her emotional state, Alexander let go after a few moments and exited the elevator when it opened. He waited for her to follow, but she stayed inside.
"Step out," he instructed.
"I don't want to talk to you right now," Lilly said, pressing the button to go to the top floor.
Alexander held her gaze until the elevator doors closed.
"Sir, the reporters have been removed from the premises," James reported as he approached.
"Ensure every reporter present today loses their job within two hours. Also, find out who orchestrated this immediately," Alexander ordered, clenching his fist.
"Right away, sir."
Within an hour, all the involved reporters were unemployed, but the mastermind was still unidentified.
Lilly sat on the rooftop, reading the news on her phone. Headlines about her and Alexander dominated the media. She realized she had been quick to blame him, forgetting that there were two people who would do anything to tarnish her name.
She called Jacob, who answered immediately.
"Hello, ma'am."
"Jacob, find out everything my stepmother and sister have been doing for the past ten days."
"Right away, ma'am. I'll find out if they were involved."
Lilly ended the call, took a deep breath, and stood up to leave the rooftop, only to find Alexander watching her.
"Who is Jacob? What are you investigating about your stepmother and sister? You'd better tell me what you've been up to, Lilly," he said, his tone warning.
