Chapter 13

Unable to bear the uncertainty surrounding Lilly’s condition, Sarah rushed back inside, her heart racing with worry. She immediately dialed Jacob, hoping he could provide some much-needed answers.

“Hey, Sarah. What’s going on?” Jacob’s voice was casual, but Sarah could hear the underlying concern.

“Jacob, Lilly was rushed to the hospital. I have no idea which one. Can you find out where she is?”

“What happened?” Jacob’s voice tightened with alarm.

Michael, who had overheard the conversation, grabbed the phone from Jacob, putting the call on speaker. “What do you mean she’s at the hospital?” His tone was sharp, revealing his anxiety.

“I’m not exactly sure. Lilly came into the coffee shop this morning, shivering and looking unwell. Then she suddenly collapsed,” Sarah explained, her voice trembling with worry.

“Damn it. How could you not know which hospital?” Michael’s frustration was evident. “Weren’t you with her?”

“I called her husband immediately. He came and took her to the hospital before I even had a chance to follow them,” Sarah snapped, her patience wearing thin.

“Some hospitals use fingerprint identification systems. We can’t let them find out her identity,” Jacob added urgently.

“Isn’t it your job to prevent them from discovering her identity, even with her fingerprints?” Sarah demanded.

“Yes, but I need to block their server first. I need to find out where she is,” Jacob explained, his tone steady despite the pressure.

“Then stop talking and find out where she is!” Sarah’s agitation was palpable.

“I’m already working on it. There’s no need to shout,” Jacob replied.

“Don’t make me shout again,” Sarah warned, her frustration evident. “I know you both plan to visit her, but I’ll be the only one at the hospital with her.”

“We can’t just sit here while she’s in the hospital,” Michael protested.

“She’s right, Michael. Alexander will definitely investigate us. Only one of us can go, and it has to be me,” Jacob agreed after a moment of deliberation.

“Fine. It’s you, Sarah,” Michael conceded reluctantly.

Jacob swiftly located Lilly at Brightside Hospital and sent Sarah the details. She hurried to the hospital, her mind racing with worry.

In the VIP ward of the hospital, Alexander sat rigidly in the waiting area, his anxiety palpable as he waited for news about Lilly.

Richard emerged from Lilly’s room, and Alexander immediately stood up, his gaze intense.

“How is she?” Alexander’s voice was urgent.

“She’s stable and will be discharged later today. She had a minor cold, but if you want her to have a healthy pregnancy, you need to ensure this doesn’t happen again,” Richard advised, his tone professional but concerned.

Alexander nodded, his gaze shifting towards the room where Lilly rested.

“You care about her more than you let on,” Richard observed, noting Alexander’s intense focus.

“Stop with the speculation,” Alexander replied sharply, though his eyes revealed a flicker of guilt.

“You were the one who insisted she be placed in VIP and ensured she received the best care. Your actions speak louder than words,” Richard said, before heading back to his office.

Alexander remained by the door, his thoughts troubled.

A few hours later, Lilly slowly opened her eyes to find herself in a private room with a drip and a beeping machine. She tried to sit up, but Sarah’s gentle hand stopped her.

“Stay still, Lilly,” Sarah said softly.

“Why am I in the hospital?” Lilly asked, confusion in her voice.

“You fainted. Your body was extremely weak and cold,” Sarah explained, her concern evident.

Lilly recalled the events and nodded. “When can I be discharged?”

“The nurse said later today,” Sarah replied.

Lilly looked around, taking in the luxurious surroundings. “Which hospital is this?”

“Brightside Hospital. I believe it’s associated with a friend of your husband,” Sarah informed her.

Lilly’s eyes widened as she realized she was in a VIP room. “So, Alexander brought me here?”

“Yes, when you collapsed, I called him, and he came immediately to bring you,” Sarah confirmed.

“He did?” Lilly’s surprise was evident.

“Yes. Now, are you going to tell me what happened?” Sarah asked, her concern evident.

Lilly recounted the events that led to her collapse, her frustration clear.

“I’ll have words with him when I see him,” Sarah vowed.

Before Lilly could respond, Grandma Helen entered the room, her presence commanding attention.

“Oh, my dear,” Grandma Helen said, approaching Lilly’s bedside with a warm yet firm demeanor. “How are you feeling?”

Lilly was surprised to see her grandmother. “Grandma, how did you…?”

“I heard everything. That grandson of mine has a lot to answer for,” Grandma Helen said indignantly, her eyes softening as she looked at Lilly.

“Grandma, it’s just a minor issue,” Lilly tried to reassure her.

“Minor or not, his behavior was unacceptable,” Sarah chimed in, her voice full of conviction.

“And where is he? Not even here to care for you,” Grandma Helen added, her disappointment clear.

Before Lilly could reply, Grandma Helen noticed Sarah.

“And who is this?” Grandma Helen asked, acknowledging Sarah’s presence.

“She’s a close friend of mine, practically family,” Lilly introduced.

“Hello, Ma’am. I’m Sarah,” Sarah greeted politely.

Grandma Helen nodded approvingly. “Thank you for being here with her.”

“Of course. That’s what friends are for,” Sarah replied sincerely.

Grandma Helen then turned back to Lilly. “Don’t worry, dear. I’ve arranged for Clara to gather your things. You’ll be coming home with me for a few days after you’re discharged.”

“But Grandma, I…” Lilly began.

“No arguments. You’re coming with me,” Grandma Helen insisted firmly.

Later, in a tense meeting room, everyone anxiously awaited Alexander’s decision on the rural construction project.

Occasionally, eyes turned to their formidable boss, who sat at the head of the table, tapping his fingers—a sound that echoed in the otherwise silent room.

Despite the air conditioning, the room felt stifling with anxiety. If Alexander rejected the project, it would spell disaster for everyone involved.

Finally, Alexander stopped tapping his fingers, scanned the room with a cold, calculated gaze, and said, “Start over.”

With that, he stood up and left the meeting room, leaving everyone in stunned silence.

As Alexander walked back to his office, James followed closely behind.

“Any news from the hospital?” Alexander asked, his voice tense.

“Yes, boss. Miss Evans has been discharged,” James reported.

“Did she go home?” Alexander inquired.

“Well, about that…” James hesitated.

Alexander stopped and turned to face his assistant. “Go on.”

“I was informed that Mrs. Kane went to the hospital to see Miss Evans and took her back to the family house,” James explained nervously.

Alexander’s grip tightened on his phone. “Return her. Now, Grandma.”
