Chapter 42

Alexander couldn’t focus at work, preoccupied with thoughts of Lilly. Even knowing her grandfather’s men had taken her didn’t ease his worry. Leaving his tasks behind, he abruptly left the office.

James saw his boss leaving just as he was about to submit important files and remind him of a critical meeting.

"Boss, are you leaving?"

"Yes."

"But there’s an important meeting in an hour."

"Cancel it."

"Huh?" James was shocked. His boss never canceled crucial meetings, so this was unusual. "I said cancel it!" Alexander half-yelled, clearly stressed.

James swallowed and bowed, "Yes, boss." Alexander gave him a cold look before walking away.

Since the argument with Miss Blake, Alexander had been in a foul mood. James was certain his boss was going to see her, but she was supposedly with her grandfather. The situation stressed him out, even though Alexander growing fond of his wife should have been a good thing.

Lilly was taken to a secluded inn outside the city, accessible only to a select few, including her grandfather. Victor led the way, followed by guards. They reached a private room where she saw her grandfather, Caleb, pouring tea. The fresh tea indicated he was promptly informed of her arrival.

Lilly approached, bowed twice in greeting, "Good day, Grandfather."

Caleb looked at her, "Sit down, you shouldn’t be standing too long."

Did he know something? Lilly wondered, raising her brow. She nodded and sat.

"Have tea. Last time you didn’t join me, so have some now." Lilly obeyed, sipping the tea. "Grandfather, you sent for me."

"Mmmm," Caleb nodded, his brow furrowed.

Despite being in his 70s, Caleb looked younger, like he was in his 50s. Lilly was relieved he maintained his health, despite past tragedies. He had taught her and her sisters to stay strong and never show weakness.

Alexander was her only weakness. Recalling their argument that morning, which drove her to leave the company, she felt sad. She had asked why he allowed Albert Lee and others to attend the meeting if he had no intention of partnering with them. She accused him of deliberately making her face her ex-boyfriend. Instead of an explanation, he insulted her, comparing her to other women and accusing her of favoritism towards Albert.

Alexander had claimed he wanted to see her reaction to Albert and was annoyed she addressed Albert casually while maintaining formality with him. Unable to bear his harsh words, she had left.

Seeing her lost in thought, Caleb asked, "What’s on your mind, child?"

"I’m sorry, Grandfather. I was just thinking."

"Is there something you need to tell me?" Caleb asked, scrutinizing her.

"No... there’s nothin—" Bang! Caleb slammed his hand on the table, startling her.

"Nothing?! How about explaining why you’re pregnant and didn’t inform me, your grandfather!"

Lilly was shocked, "How did you...?"

"You should know your grandfather by now."

She sighed, realizing she had underestimated her grandfather's capabilities. She should have known he’d find out sooner or later.

"And that’s not all! How dare you sign a contract with Alexander Kane to have a child and leave the child with him!" Caleb pointed accusingly. "You’re a disappointment! How dare you!"

Lilly felt the ground could swallow her whole. How had he learned about the confidential contract? She knelt at his feet, realizing she had done something terrible. She had hoped Alexander would eventually love her, nullifying the contract.

"I’m giving you a chance to explain yourself," Caleb said.

Lilly explained everything. When she finished, Caleb raised his hand, ready to hit her, but stopped himself.

"If you weren’t pregnant, I’d have slapped you hard."

"I’m sorry, Grandfather. Please forgive me."

"This isn’t how I raised you!" Caleb gritted his teeth. "The worst part is you signed a contract with the devil himself!" Lilly was taken aback by his words.

"Grandfather, why would you call him that?"

Caleb clenched his fist, "I don’t understand why you’d love a man like him."

Seeing the pained expression on his face, Lilly felt even more confused and curious.
