Chapter 43

She vividly recalled her grandfather's previous warning, "Grandfather, what do you mean? Is there something I should know about Alexander?" He had hinted that she was unaware of Alexander's true nature.

Caleb gazed at his granddaughter with regret. He was about to speak when someone barged into the room. Both turned to see Alexander entering.

Seeing her kneeling, Alexander frowned and quickly pulled her up. "Never kneel on the cold floor, especially not when you’re carrying my child," he commanded, aware that Caleb knew everything, so there was no need for secrecy.

Lilly pulled away from him, which made him frown and grab her hand again. She kept her attention on her grandfather.

"You scoundrel," Caleb gritted his teeth. "Are you trying to exploit my granddaughter?"

Lilly was now more confused, liking both men better but puzzled about what she didn’t know between them.

Alexander, as usual, showed no emotion and didn't spare a glance at Caleb, focusing solely on Lilly. "I need to talk to your grandfather alone. Wait outside," he instructed, uneasy about what Caleb might reveal. Lilly hesitated before nodding and leaving.

Outside, she met Victor and Max standing by. Max bowed respectfully, and she nodded back. They escorted her outside, where two cars were parked. Max opened Alexander's car for her, but Lilly chose to wait in the car she arrived in.

Max, noticing her decision, closed the car door and kept watch, even though guards were present. Lilly remembered her grandfather’s past underworld connections and wondered if Alexander was involved too. Was that why Caleb referred to him as a devil? What didn’t she know about her husband?

Time passed, and she decided to ask Victor, standing nearby. "Uncle," as she and her late sisters called him despite no blood relation.

"Yes, young miss?"

"How long have they been talking?"

"An hour already."

She was surprised at how long she had been waiting. "Do you want me to get you lunch, young miss? It's past lunchtime."

"No, I’ll wait."

Victor was worried since she needed to eat for the baby, but decided to respect her choice. "Okay, miss."

Ten minutes later, Alexander emerged from the inn, looking angry, with Caleb following. Victor sighed; the discussion had ended badly as usual. Before Lilly’s involvement with Alexander, both men had several disputes, often cutting ties until they became in-laws. Caleb was deeply concerned upon learning Lilly married Alexander Kane, a ruthless man controlling both the business and underworld. His worry grew when he found out she was pregnant and had signed a contract with him.

Not noticing Lilly in a different car, Alexander approached his car. When he found her missing, his anger surged, snapping at Max, "Where is she?"

"Sir, Ma'am is in the other car."

Alexander saw Lilly speaking to her grandfather and walked over. He took her hand, "Let's go." Despite her anger, she knew it was best to follow him to avoid more arguments. He led her to the car, sat her inside, then joined her, instructing the driver to leave.

Caleb watched their car disappear before turning to Victor. "Let's go as well," he said, but Victor interjected.

"Master, how was the discussion?"

Caleb sighed. "I almost made the mistake of revealing something to my granddaughter."

"You mean you both agreed not to tell Lilly about Alexander’s underworld involvement?"

"No, I decided it’s up to him to tell her. She’s smart and likely suspects already. But I overcame my greatest fear today."

"What was that, Master?"

"I feared he didn't care for her. But from our discussion, I realized he cares deeply, even if he doesn’t see it himself," Caleb explained.

Victor saw some relief in Caleb’s expression. "There’s no one else who will protect her like Alexander. Maybe she didn’t make a wrong choice."

They entered the car and drove away. Far off, a car observed them leaving the inn. The driver made a call.

"They just left."

"Keep an eye on her," a voice instructed.

"Yes, ma’am," the driver replied, then drove off in a different direction.

Bella hung up the phone and turned to her daughter, who smiled. Kate, in tears, had recounted how Lilly humiliated her in a meeting, emphasizing Lilly’s influence over Alexander and her secret contributions to the family. They agreed Lilly needed to be eliminated immediately.

"Don’t worry, child. My men are watching her and will strike at the right moment. Lilly will be out of our lives soon, and she won’t bother you anymore," Bella assured.

Kate smiled wickedly. "I can't wait."
