Chapter 39
The following day, Lilly donned a black pencil skirt that ended just above her knees, pairing it with a silk blouse tucked neatly into the skirt. She completed the look with modest heels. She pulled her hair into a ponytail, letting it cascade down her back. After applying a touch of makeup, she stepped out of her room and went downstairs. Excitement bubbled within her at the thought of attending a project consultation meeting.
Alexander was at the breakfast table, eating a substantial meal for a change instead of his usual tea or coffee with a newspaper. "Good morning," she greeted, receiving only a nod in response. Alexander seemed pleased with her attire. After a maid served her breakfast, they left for the office.
On the way, Lilly decided to ask about the companies since she knew nothing about them. "Mr. Kane," she called.
"What is it?" he replied.
"I still don't know anything about the companies that submitted those projects."
Alexander was silent for a moment before responding, "You'll be briefed about each company during the meeting."
How was she supposed to understand full details about each company during the meeting itself? She couldn’t remember the abbreviations of the company names and hadn’t been able to look them up. If only she had done so the previous day.
They arrived at the office without encountering reporters, though employees from afar stared at them. "She's even more beautiful in person and looks so elegant," one employee remarked audibly.
"She must have something special to be the heir to the Blake empire," another added.
Yesterday, they had used a different entrance to avoid reporters, but today they entered through the front, where employees were bustling around. Despite negative online news about her, no one dared speak ill of their boss's wife for fear of losing their jobs.
Lilly walked beside Alexander as they entered his private elevator and ascended to the 88th floor. "Sir, the meeting will start in an hour. Do you want to go to the meeting room or your office first?" James asked, trying to keep up with Alexander's brisk pace. Lilly lagged behind, unable to match his speed. She noticed employees staring at her, gossiping among themselves.
Alexander stopped and turned around, seeing her walking slowly behind. James also turned to look at Lilly, who appeared graceful. Alexander then said, "We'll go to the meeting room first."
"We?" James was puzzled.
"Yes, I'm attending the meeting," Lilly said.
"Huh?" James was surprised. Why was she attending when she knew nothing about it?
Lilly smiled at James's shocked expression. Alexander continued, "I want you to fire all the employees who gossiped in my presence and ensure they don’t find jobs elsewhere."
"Right away, sir," James replied, not daring to object.
"Huh?" Lilly was shocked. "Why fire them? They didn't say anything bad."
Alexander's expression remained emotionless. "Let's go," he said, leading the way. She had no choice but to follow.
After settling in the large meeting room, one of the secretaries handed Lilly information about the companies they would be meeting with. She reviewed each company’s details one by one until she reached the last two.
The next company, a new one named ALCorp, had a project that she had deemed manageable. To her surprise, it was owned by Albert Lee, her ex-boyfriend. She looked at Alexander, who was seated at the head of the table near her.
"Is there a problem?" he asked in a professional tone, showing no emotion.
He knew it was Albert's company and still wanted her to attend the meeting?
"Nothing," she replied professionally.
She moved to the last company and saw that the project she had marked "Redo" was from the real estate company managed by her stepsister. This explained the poor quality of the project, as her sister had rushed it. Now, she understood why Alexander wanted her to evaluate them herself—both companies were run by people she knew well.
She looked up at him again, and he was staring at her before shifting his gaze to James. "We'll start with the Blake real estate company," Alexander said.
James nodded and instructed the coordinators to bring Kate and her team into the room.
After about ten minutes, the door opened, and Kate entered with a smile. But when she saw Lilly seated next to Alexander, her smile vanished. What was Lilly doing here? Kate clenched her fists.
