Her Alpha Mate 33
Freya:
I couldn't believe it.
What was wrong with everyone finding their partners these days? First Reece, then Pearl, and the next thing you know, Chance found his mate, too.
Pearl slowly strode up to Alpha Peter and stopped right in front of him, as if waiting for him to say something. He seemed as stunned as the rest of us.
"I-you-like-you're my mate?" He stammered in disbelief.
Zack groaned and rubbed his face, "Why now? Why not someone else?"
I rolled my eyes in the face of his dramatics, "It's not like you can choose. Besides, the Moon Goddess is probably trying to tell us that Alpha Peter is supposed to be here."
"Little Pearl, you're my mate!"
It was clear that Alpha Peter hadn't yet gotten over his shock. Pearl didn't seem to know what to think, for her face showed a variety of emotions: Admiration, excitement, confusion, etc.
"I hope your zipper stayed up last year, Peter," she said before slapping her hand over her mouth. I bit my lip to keep from laughing, because she clearly hadn't meant to say that.
Alpha Peter's stunned face turned into a grin, "I guess my zipper should really fall in love with you. I've to tell you, he's been waiting for this moment."
He wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her to his chest.
Pearl moaned and banged her head against his chest several times, "What was the moon goddess thinking?"
"She obviously thought you fell for my pick-up lines and decided to get your wish," Alpha Peter said, running a hand through his hair, "I know it's hard to resist me..."
"Or," Pearl interrupted, "she took pity on all the single she-wolves and mated you with the first unmated she-wolf she saw."
Alpha Peter gasped dramatically and pressed a hand over his heart, "Babe, that hurts. I know I don't deserve you, but don't rip my heart out."
I listened to their banter with amusement before taking a moment to really look at them. Although Pearl seemed annoyed by Alpha Peter, there was no denying that she seemed to like him. And the same was true for Alpha Peter; he seemed oblivious to the fact that he was pulling Pearl closer to him and staring at her with an amorous expression on his face.
I walked over to Zack and whispered,
"Don't they look cute together?"
It was obvious from Zack's facial expression that he disagreed.
"That's my sister," he snapped at Alpha Peter, "So keep your hands to yourself. Do I make myself clear?"
Alpha Peter smiled innocently, "Who me?"
Zack pinched the bridge of his nose and shook his head, "Sometimes I wonder how you became an Alpha."
"Well, you know, a long time ago. The alpha and Luna from the Dark Moon pack decided to go to bed and -"
"Peter!"
The rest of us had to stifle a laugh as the two alphas glared at each other.
"You know what, Zack?" Alpha Peter grinned, his eyes twinkling mischievously.
"What?" Zack hissed.
"We're brothers-in-law!"
Zack groaned, "That's all I need."
Reece cleared his throat loudly, "As amusing as this is, I think you're all forgetting why we're here. There's a dead wolf in front of us. The Griffins want war. And we've a lot of planning to do."
After Reece spoke, there was a tense silence as everyone suddenly remembered the serious situation we were in.
"Let's go to my office and discuss our options. Reece, I want you to inform the Graham family of Vincent's death and find out if his mate has anything to say about his dealings with the Griffins. After that, check out possible suspects who may have helped Vincent, because it's clear he wouldn't have been able to do this without the help of other wolves."
Reece nodded and hurriedly left the area.
Reece turned to the Border Patrol wolves, "I don't know what's going on with the borders, but if any of you'd anything to do with this, say so now or you'll face my wrath later."
When none of them spoke up, Zack pursed his lips, "I want everyone on guard. I don't even want a squirrel crossing the line. Not even if there's a damn acorn on the ground it wants to reach for. Got it?" They nodded frantically, and Zack gave each of them a scowl, "Dismissed."
Alpha Peter cleared his throat, "I can also put my warriors on border patrol. It can't hurt to have more eyes. Besides, they could let us know if any of those border wolves are acting suspiciously."
Zack considered for a moment before looking at me for confirmation. I nodded my head, "He's right. It wouldn't hurt."
He sighed and gave Alpha Peter a nod,
"Do it."
Alpha Peter smiled at me before his eyes glazed over, signifying that he was connecting his warriors with mind-link.
Zack gave me a tired smile, "Come on. Let's go over some battle plans."
***
Within minutes there were twenty of us gathered around a large table, coffee and muffins in hand.
"To start this meeting, we are going to pitch some ideas to each other. Who would like to start?"
"How about we use Luna Freya as bait?
They would come after her and we would be there to protect her," said an elder named Felix, smiling smugly as if his idea was perfect.
Juilet snorted loudly, "The Griffins are not that stupid. They'll know the moment we drop them off whether Freya is bait or not."
I pursed my lips, "Juilet, who is the leader of the Griffins?"
A disgusted look crossed her face as she stared at her muffin, "Douglas Kane."
"Is he smart?"
"You could say that, but his ego blinds him. He's all about power."
"Why don't we just do a surprise attack?"
Another elder added.
Juilet shook her head again, "They are well prepared for that too. Before I left, they had all kinds of plans for what would happen in the event of a surprise attack."
I rubbed my temples, "Do you know anyone who would be willing to be a spy and pass information to us?"
"Yes, but I have no way of contacting them. I would have to go back to the mountains."
Reece stood up angrily, "No way."
Juilet stood up, "Reece, I know the mountains inside and out. I could go there and come back safely."
"What if someone sees you? They'll ask you where you have been! How are you going to answer that, huh? Especially if you smell like me! A werewolf!"
"That's a chance I'll have to take."
"Wait," I interrupted, "maybe there's something else we can do. Juilet, I do not think it's a good idea to send you up there.
What happens if this person is not willing to help us? Then your trip would be for nothing."
She shook her head, "I know for a fact that there is no way they will refuse. They hate the idea of being mortal as much as I do."
"I can not lose you, Juilet! It's barely been three days since we met! You still have your heat cycle."
"I am leaving after my heat cycle. Do not argue with me, Reece. Please. This is to help us win this stupid war," Juilet pleaded.
I looked at Zack, who seemed as indecisive as I was.
I did not want Juilet to get hurt, but at the same time, this was our best chance. If we could get some inside information, we would have a better chance of defeating the Griffins.
"Reece, let me do this. Please. I promise you everything will be okay."
I did not know who to comfort. Reece or Juilet.
Before anyone could say another word, Reece stormed out of the boardroom.
Juilet sighed. "I am going to talk to him.
You guys go ahead."
I looked at Zack and he shook his head,
"The meeting is adjourned."
