Her Broken Mate 21
Everything was a blur as Sarah remembered lunging at Martha with her teeth. She was quickly flung aside by an unknown wolf who snarled for her to comply. His paw settled on her neck and bared his canines before her.
Seth ran to her aid, but was quickly overpowered by six other wolves. He looked at her fearfully, fearing for her safety.
Sarah quickly saw Seth's eyes glaze over and he searched his mind for a patrol or warrior that was available. He tried to get up again, but she feared it might be too late.
Sarah struggled and wriggled to get the filthy rogue off of her. She whimpered helplessly and watched as Ludovic was drained of his blood. His face turned deathly pale as his body went limp. Ludovic was still trying to free himself from Martha's grip, but she was indestructible.
Soon he became stiff.
Sarah felt another bond breaking inside her. The death of a pack member, yet again. Tears pricked her eyes.
Martha dropped Ludovic as if he were a piece of dirt. She smiled and wiped her lips with the tip of her thumb. "Delicious. God, the blood of a werewolf really does taste different. Doesn't it?" she cackled.
The rogues who'd ambushed her laughed like hyenas, grinning from ear to ear.
Sarah could see one rogue exchanging Beatrice's blood bags and taking as much as he could.
Those sick bastards!
Martha soon stood over Beatrice and reached for the little puppy lying next to her. As soon as she grabbed the puppy, she held it in her hand. Martha cooed softly at him. "There, there... Mommy's here. I'd have loved to raise you, but... the thing is, Daddy doesn't want you. If only your daddy wouldn't try to kill you just so he could stay with his bitch of a partner..." she muttered before clenching her hand into a fist.
Almost instantly, Sarah could see that the puppy was gone. Martha had crushed the puppy, a cry of pain echoing through the air. Sarah didn't realize it was her own pain as she felt another ligament snap inside her.
Thunder howled, sending power to her. It was enough to push the villain off her, so she quickly grabbed his neck between her canines and snapped his neck.
A low whimper escaped from him before he fell down dead.
When Martha finally got her attention, she turned and looked at her.
"Ah, you're Seth's mate... aren't you?" she asked, a sweet smile forming on her lips. Her gaze was soon on Seth, "You've grown so much since I last saw you."
Seth's eyes were pitch black as he growled.
"My goodness..." she said, laughing.
Sarah stared at her dumbly, watching as more villains surrounded her. There was nothing she could do. They were outnumbered.
Beside her, Sarah could hear Seth taking on the villains. He'd already killed four of them, and two of them were trying to keep him at bay.
Seeing this, Martha decided it was time to go. "It doesn't matter if you don't answer.
I think we're even ... for now. I hope Jupiter got the message," she said, turning to leave while snapping her fingers.
Quickly, the villains grabbed all the blood bags that had been taken from Beatrice. They began to follow Martha when Sarah shouted, "Are you really doing this just because of Jupiter? Just because he rejected you? He had a mate, you knew that. They'd a son together." she paused, a tear rolling down her cheek. "What you're doing isn't bringing him back. You're not helping yourself. Why don't you just move on? Are you really just as power hungry as he says?"
Martha paused and turned her head toward her. Anger filled her eyes. "He didn't just reject me. Why don't you ask your dear old alpha? I'm not satisfied with him yet, little girl."
The two remaining villains who were on Seth quickly ran after Martha and followed her. Seth struggled back to his feet, covered in blood and bruises.
She gave Sarah one last look before walking away, deeper into the mist, and disappeared. Along with the lives of her two pack members.
Sarah quickly changed back into her human form and ran toward Beatrice's corpse.
As she knelt beside her, she could see the life fading from her eyes. By now, Sarah was already crying.
Beatrice wasn't dead yet, there was still time.
When Seth saw this, he ran toward the patrols and the pack doctor, urging them to come faster. Sarah could hear the voices of the pack members coming closer and closer.
"Beatrice, look at me. Stay with me, okay? Seth is going to get the pack doctor. They'll fix you up," she sobbed, holding her hand.
Beatrice turned to her slowly, a single tear falling from her eye. "... Mine. My baby... and my mate... they're dead..." she whimpered. "There's no reason for me to live a life without my soulmate," she continued.
"No, no. Don't say that. It's okay," Sarah cried.
"Don't be sad. I'll be with them and with the moon goddess too." said Beatrice, smiling at her. She looked up at the sky and whispered, "Thank you for everything."
And just like that, she was gone.
_ _ _
The crunch of grass brought Sarah back to reality, her brown eyes meeting blue ones.
"Seth," she whispered out.
He frowned and pointed at the note she was clutching. Wanting nothing more to do with it, she held out her hand and gestured for him to take it. He did, his eyes skimming over the words before his eyes flashed black.
She nodded, her gaze downward, "Martha is behind this, we need to train our warriors. An act of defiance is an act against us."
The two exchanged a look and agreed to the terms. They turned back to the grieving parents and offered their condolences.
Later that evening, they held the funeral for their fallen pack members. Kate as well as Beatrice and Ludovic. They even held a funeral for their pup, who'd just been ripped from Beatrice's womb. They were all well-known warriors. This led to many members coming to say goodbye.
One after another gave a speech about Kate, Beatrice or Ludovic and the memories they'd with them. There were sniffles and smiles knowing they were in a better place.
Finally, the end was near. Their coffins were lowered into the ground. Even their puppy's coffin, which was so small.
No coffin should ever be so small...
Out of the corner of her eye, Sarah saw Kate's mother fall to her knees, sobbing and pleading for her beloved daughter to return. Her father knelt down and hugged his companion tightly, tears stinging his eyes as well.
Meanwhile, Beatrice's parents and Ludovic's parents were also sobbing and crying. They'd no idea that they'd become grandparents, but they'd missed the opportunity when Martha mercilessly killed the puppy.
The death of a person kills not only himself, but also the people who surround him.
Sarah gritted her teeth and tried to hold back a tear, but it rolled down her cheek. Seth put his hand around her shoulders and stroked her comfortingly. He looked at her with great sadness; the loss of a pack member wasn't to be taken lightly, after all.
Raindrops fell on her as if the sky was crying. The clouds became so dark grey that the sunlight could no longer shine through.
Seth and she stayed behind until they were the last to leave. Out of respect, because leaders have to stay behind to make sure everyone goes home safely. By now her hair was all wet and the black dress she wore was sticking to her skin.
Sarah knelt down and placed a bouquet of flowers on Beatrice and Ludovic's grave. Kate's grave was the last grave she visited, but before she stood up, she whispered sadly, "You were a brave soul, Beatrice... Ludovic, and Kate. You'll be missed. You were loved by many, thank you for your hard work," she swallowed, "Revenge will be taken, I promise."
As she stepped back, it was Seth's turn to say goodbye. Seth bowed his head and kissed the grave. He couldn't speak, so this was the best he could do.
They looked at all three graves, saddened by their deaths. Hand in hand they walked to the packing house, depressed at what had just happened.
When they reached the door, she silently made a promise;
'I'll come for you, Martha, and this time you'll not escape.'
