Her Alpha Mate 44

Zack:

'Alpha, the griffins are in retreat.'

I ripped the wing off the griffin I was fighting and let him run away covered in blood. He wasn't going to make it back to the mountains anyway unless he stopped the bleeding somehow.

I turned and looked over at Peter, who was struggling to get the feathers out of his fur. I knelt down and helped him pull them off before nodding to him to signal that we were safe. He grinned and barked before running off to check on either his warriors or Pearl.

Speaking of mates, Freya wasn't responding to my mind links. I kept sending messages that weren't getting through, as if she'd a mind lock, which made no sense since communication was vital at the moment.

Fear spread through me as doubts ran through my mind. Was she injured? Had she been attacked on the way to the other pack? Was she... There was no way she was dead. I'd have felt the bond break.
My wolf whimpered in my head at the thought, and I comforted him gently, letting him know that his mate was probably fine. Freya was a fighter, an amazing one at that. Just last week she'd almost killed Hunter's eyeballs out with her nails during training.

'Mate might be hurt. Find our mate.' Dickson said.

My wolf was frantically running back and forth trying to reach Freya's wolf. I pursed my lips, brushed myself off, and made my way to the eastern border where Reece and Chance were conducting a head count of all the warriors.

"Who went with Freya to the other pack?"
I asked, trying not to alarm the rest of the warriors.

Chance frowned and looked at his list, "It says here that Kevin, Hunter, Elvis, and Alex went. Why?"

My eyes narrowed, and I immediately made a mind connection to the four of them. 'Warriors, where's my Luna?'

The connection was silent, but I knew they were listening. The messages were transmitted smoothly.

'Alpha, you might want to sit down,' Hunter said.

'I swear to the Moon Goddess, if you don't tell me right now, I'm going to kill all of you. Where the hell is she?'

'She's gone, Alpha.'

Chance:

For the first time in my life, I was a little afraid of Zack.

He was seething with anger, and even that was an understatement.

The veins in his temple throbbed violently, and his eyes grew darker with each passing moment. His body shook with rage before he let out a roar that made almost all the wolves around us fall to their knees in fear.

I resisted the urge to tremble as his anger rolled off him in tsunami-like waves.

"Shit," Reece muttered beside me as we watched Zack roar again, extending his claws and fur.

"I'm going to get Kennedy. He's the only one who can calm him down," I said, hurrying to the western border where Kennedy stood, Georgina, Alpha Nathan and Luna Jennifer were tending to the wounded. I ran up to Kennedy and grabbed him by the shoulder, "Kennedy, you've to come right away. Something has happened to Freya and Zack is out of control."

His eyes widened and I heard Alpha Nathan growling loudly, "What did you just say, puppy?"

I ignored my wolf's growl at the word
'Puppy' and turned to Alpha Nathan, who was starting to get red in the face.

Oh great. Another alpha on a rampage. Just what we needed.

Luckily, Luna Jennifer was quick to respond and put her arms around him to calm him down.

"I don't know what happened, but Zack was trying to find out what happened to Freya. He made a mind connection with the warriors and they said something that upset him."

Luna Jennifer looked like she was going to cry while Alpha Nathan's face darkened.

"Kennedy, come on. Before Zack does something stupid," I said hastily, not giving him a chance to realize what was going on. He seemed just as shocked as Georgina, but he didn't need to say it three times before running in the direction I came from.

We followed him back to the eastern border, where Reece was trying to keep Zack from attacking the newcomers. Hunter gave me a desperate look and asked me to help him, but I just shook my head.

When Zack stopped struggling, Reece let him go for a moment, which was a big mistake. In seconds, Zack had his hands around Hunter's neck.

Hunter clutched at his hands, gasping for air as Zack tightened his grip.

"Zack, you're going to kill him. Let go!"

Georgina shouted and rushed to Hunter's aid. Zack growled, "You were supposed to watch her, but you didn't. Now she's gone. She's gone."

"Zack," Kennedy said in a deadly calm tone, "put the wolf down. Now."

All the warriors heaved a sigh of relief almost simultaneously as Zack let go of Hunter and dropped him to the ground.
Unfortunately, that didn't mean Zack was any less angry. If anything, he was even angrier than before.

It seemed his wolf had taken over his mind.
He emitted harsh shouts and gasps as he struggled to control himself. He fell to his knees and dug his claws into the dirt, sweat dripping from his brow.

Kennedy knelt beside him and rubbed his back, "You need to calm down, son. If we're going to find Freya, you need to keep a level head. Logic is more important than emotion right now."

It took a few minutes, but Zack managed to get his wolf back under control.

He exhaled deeply and opened his eyes.
I swallowed down the lump in my throat as I recognized the look in his eyes. It was the same look my father had when he learned that my mother had been killed in the rogue attack.

He was dead inside.

His eyes were the color of the clouds before it rained, dull and gloomy, though they still seemed to flash like daggers.

"What happened?" he said, looking to Hunter, who was rubbing the back of his neck nervously.

"We were almost at the neighboring pack when suddenly there was fog everywhere.
We couldn't see anything anymore. We stopped and waited a few moments for the fog to clear completely. When it was gone, we looked around and Luna Freya was gone. It was as if the fog had taken her away with it."

Zack didn't say a word as he stood up and took off his shirt.

"Call the reserve warriors. We'll form a search party."

He walked into the woods without anyone saying another word to him.
