Her Alpha Mate 61
Chance:
What. The. Fuck. Just. Happened.
Did Zack really yell at Freya like that? And for what reason? Because he didn't finish his work?
I blinked a few times before I realized Freya was still sitting there staring at the door Zack and Kennedy had walked through.
I walked slowly toward her so as not to startle her, "Hey. You okay?"
She let out a soft snort and shook her head in disbelief, "I'm just surprised. I never thought he could go after someone like that."
"Oh, he's gone off on people before, but for good reason," I said, sitting down next to her and stroking her back, "I've no idea why he'd yell at you like that, though. I mean, believe it or not, the man just adores you."
She sighed and began to write again, "You know, I'm sure what he was expecting when he gave me all those papers today.
It's a wonder I got as much done as I did."
"He gave y'all these today?" I stared at the big stack.
"I know," she said. "It's uncharacteristic of him to take so long to hand someone paperwork, but I noticed they were all sorted, so that's probably why it took him so long."
This still didn't make sense to me. Zack was a reasonable person (most of the time)
and he knew to apologize when he was in the wrong, which brings me to my next question: Why did he yell at Freya instead of apologizing for giving her too much work?
"Something's not right here," I shook my head, "Zack has never done this to anyone before. He always gives Reece and me at least three days to finish important files."
"When you figure out what's going on, let me know. I want to finish those files and forget about them. They're more trouble than they're worth," she muttered, staring at the stack.
I stood up and looked at my watch, "I'm going to check on Kennedy and Zack. Make sure he doesn't beat him up."
"Could you make me a cup of tea before you go? I don't think I'll be able to sleep tonight," she asked, also looking at the clock.
I frowned, "You know, on second thought,
I can help you finish these. You're pregnant, Freya. I don't want you to stay up too late."
"That's all right, Chance. Besides, I want Zack to feel guilty, if you know what I mean," she said and gave me a tired smile.
I returned the smile hesitantly and nodded, "All right. If that's the way you want it."

I quickly left the house after making Freya a cup of herbal tea and headed to my apartment for a quick stop.
I slipped into the house and found Betty asleep on the couch, the TV still on. I turned it off and gently shook her, "Baby, wake up."
She groaned and rubbed her eyes, "What's wrong, Chance? Isn't it ten already?"
"I'm sorry I woke you up, babe. But do you mind staying with Freya tonight?" I asked, running my fingers through her hair.
She blinked once, sat up and pulled the covers off, "Is she okay? What happened?"
"It's a long story," I sighed, "but I don't think Zack will be staying with her tonight."
She frowned worriedly and stood up, folding the blanket neatly and placing it on the back of the couch, "Has she eaten at all? Do you want me to bring her something to eat?"
I pursed my lips. I hadn't thought of that at all.
Betty noticed my expression and shrugged, "I'll bring her some lasagna. It can't hurt. She eats for two anyway."
"Good idea," I nodded and leaned over to kiss her lips, "I'll see you later."
She kissed me on the cheek and disappeared into the kitchen.
I left the house again and made my way to Kennedy and Georgina's apartment. When I entered the house, the first thing I heard was Kennedy yelling.
"I don't care if she blew up your house, but you don't yell at a pregnant she-wolf like that," he yelled.
I stepped into the kitchen and looked at the scene before me. Zack sat at the dining room table with his arms folded while Kennedy paced back and forth in front of him.
"Dad, I know," Zack said, rubbing his face, "I shouldn't have yelled at her. Period. But I was just annoyed that she didn't finish the papers. I mean, I tried to make it as easy as possible for her. All she'd to do was go through them and leave some notes to explain what was said."
Kennedy sighed. "So maybe Freya took on more than she could chew. But instead of yelling at her, you could've called someone to help her finish it. I'm just baffled by this. You've been in so many worse situations, and a couple of late papers just ticked you off," he snapped his fingers.
"I think all the stress got to me, and unfortunately Freya became my scapegoat," Zack muttered, pinching his nose.
Kennedy shook his head, "You both made mistakes. The biggest mistake you made was that you started all the work too late. I understand that you were excited about your puppy, but you can't forget your job as alpha. If you want to spend more time with Freya, plan accordingly, but don't put everything off until later. As Alpha, you must never put anything off, Zack.
Remember that."
With these last words, Kennedy left the kitchen, leaving Zack to ponder. I waited quietly at the door, waiting for him to say or do something.
"Is she all right?" he asked after a few minutes.
"She seemed fine when I left," I said quietly, watching him run his fingers through his hair.
He shook his head slowly and stood up,
"I'm going to stay here tonight. I've a stack of paperwork to do anyway."
I opened my mouth to protest, but he disappeared before I could stop him. I pursed my lips and eyed the moon suspiciously.
She was definitely playing a game with them tonight.

Zack:
I fell asleep around four in the morning and woke up at seven. I probably could've slept longer, but without Freya by my side, I obviously had a hard time falling asleep.
My wolf was pissed and had cut off communication with me, but that didn't stop him from wreaking havoc in my head with his howls and hisses.
I showered and put on a suit that Reece had brought over, and just as I was about to tie my tie, my mother walked in.
She raised an eyebrow at my attire and asked, "Are you planning to leave without talking to Freya?"
Obviously, my father had told her what had happened.
I sighed and picked up my suit jacket and duffel bag, "I'll see, Mom."
She looked angry for a moment, but I didn't give her a chance to lecture me. I walked past her out the door, ignoring the surprised look on my father's face as he chewed on his waffles.
When I got outside, Reece and Chance were already waiting for me with their things. They stared at me expectantly as I looked toward our house.
Where Freya was.
There was no way I could leave without seeing Freya. There was no way I could leave without at least kissing her goodbye, no matter how mad she was at me.
"I'll be there soon. Take my stuff to the car," I said, placing my duffel bag next to Reece's feet and placed my suit jacket neatly on top. They exchanged a look and nodded slowly. With my heart pounding in my chest, I made my way back to the house.
What would Freya do when she sees me?
Would she even talk to me?
I quietly entered the house and felt a lump in my throat at what I found.
Freya was asleep, her arms folded on the island and her head resting on it. Around her were a few pens and some sticky notes and a cup with a tea bag still hanging out of it.
I pursed my lips and stepped quietly toward her so as not to wake her. I reached for her face and brushed a few loose strands of hair from her face.
She'd bags under her eyes, and she looked like she'd worked all night.
If I hadn't felt guilty before, I felt even more so now. Her appearance and the thought that I was the reason made my heart ache.
Why did I've to be such an asshole sometimes? I'd to learn to keep my anger in check.
I gently wrapped my arms around her and lifted her up to bring her upstairs. She leaned her head into the crook of my neck and snuggled up to me, unaware of what was happening. Carefully, I climbed the stairs and placed her at the top of the bed, being careful not to bump her too much.
A sigh escaped my lips as I looked at her, "I'm sorry, baby. I messed up and there's no excuse for that," I whispered, stroking her cheek with my thumb.
I leaned down and kissed her lips as I murmured, "I'll make it up to you. I promise."
My hand traveled down to her belly and rubbed the soft skin, "Daddy was an asshole, wasn't he? He didn't deserve Mommy. I didn't deserve Mommy at all. I let you both down last night. I'm sorry, little one."
I kissed her belly before looking at her one last time.
"I love you. Nothing will ever change that," I
I said.
She was obviously in a deep sleep because she didn't even move, so I kissed her on the lips one last time and turned to leave.
Once I was out of the house, I took a deep breath and was making my way back when I heard someone scream and a loud growl.
I frowned and quickened my pace until I was back at my parents' house. But the sight that met my eyes surprised me. Chance had Michael's arms behind his back, while Reece clutched his throat.
I couldn't believe it, could I?
