Her Alpha Mate 56
*Six months later*
Freya:
"He's so cute, Evelyn," I cooed, rocking her baby back and forth. She smiled tiredly at me, "He should be. He takes after his mama."
I raised an eyebrow and looked closely at the baby's face, "Oh, I don't know. He definitely has Issac's eyes and mouth. I mean your husband and not that idiot also called Issac."
She puffed and stuffed another handful of French fries in her mouth, "Fuck off, I just want to get out of the hospital."
I shook my head in amusement and stared at the little one in my arms - I clearly had baby fever. Zack and I had agreed to wait a while longer for puppies, but I was beginning to think I was ready for one. After all, we'd made that decision a few months ago. Things were bound to change.
"When do you've to go back?" Evelyn asked, quickly scrolling through her phone.
I pursed my lips, "Tomorrow. I'd have liked to stay longer, but I've some things to take care of. Several people have moved from one pack to another, so I've to keep track and take care of them all."
She nodded, "So, thank you for coming in for my delivery. I know I wasn't the easiest woman to deal with in labor."
"Well, you were in pain. Besides, I think Issac had it worse. You yelled at the poor man five times because he kept telling you to relax."
"How can a woman relax when something bigger than a watermelon is coming out of her hole? Just wait until you're pregnant. Speaking of which, why aren't you pregnant?" she looked at me accusingly.
I frowned and put the baby back in the crib, "What do you mean?"
She rolled her eyes, "Are you telling me Zack is careful every time? I highly doubt it. The first time Issac and I mated, we marked a mark over the bed that said, USE A DAMN CONDOM. So we don't forget to protect ourselves."
I winked, "That's a... creative way to remember."
"The point is," she said aloud, "I think you should be pregnant now."
If only I were. Just the thought of having a puppy and loving him or her made my heart warm. My wolf would be overjoyed, and I'm sure Zack's wolf would be, too.
"I wish I was," I sighed, "but I just got my period this morning."
Evelyn grumbled in response, but continued to study me as if I were a prime specimen until my mother came in, "How's our new mommy? Do you need anything?"
She shook her head, "Nothing at all, Mrs. Davis. I'm just eating some snacks. All the pushing has made me hungry."
My mother giggled and looked at the baby, "What were you two ladies talking about?"
"Just about Freya being pregnant," Evelyn replied as if it was a normal conversation. I gave her a look that made her grin.
My mom stopped examining the baby and looked at me strangely. I shrugged my shoulders and pretended to be busy arranging some of the medical equipment. I felt her eyes on my back.
"Why don't you take a pregnancy test?" I heard Evelyn ask.
I frowned and turned back around, "I'm on my period, Evelyn. Taking a test would be a what-"
"No, I agree with her," my mother interrupted me, "Take a test."
What part of "I bleed from my vagina like I do every month" did they not understand?
My mother must've noticed my confused and frustrated expression, "Sweetie, just do it. It won't hurt."
"Yes, I got tested every week even though I knew I wasn't pregnant," Evelyn said, nodding her head.
I sighed. "Fine, but I'm telling you it's going to be negative."
My mother smiled almost secretly before hurrying out of the room to get me a test.
When she returned, I took the box from her hand and went into the bathroom connected to Evelyn's hospital room.

I didn't know why I was so nervous. If I got my period, there was no way I was pregnant. Still, every second that passed while we waited for the timer to go off was nerve-wracking.
My mom and Evelyn exchanged glances as they watched me nervously tap my fingers.
When my phone lit up and started ringing,
I stood up and walked into the bathroom, the two of them right behind me.
"I'll tell you," I said as I pushed the door open wider, "it's..."
My voice caught in my throat as I stared at the two pink lines.
"Positive?" I croaked, taking the test and holding it up to my face to make sure I wasn't imagining things.
My mother, oblivious to my shock, shrieked with happiness and wrapped her arms around me as she hugged me excitedly, "Oh my God, I'm going to be a grandma!"
She and Evelyn were yelling about some other things, but their words didn't cross my mind. I slowly sat down on the toilet seat and stared at the plastic stick that had just turned my world upside down. My heart was almost beating out of my chest as my mind slowly understood what this meant.
I was going to have a puppy.
I'd be a mother.
Zack would be a father.
Everything around me blurred as tears welled up in my eyes. I covered my mouth to stifle a sob and blinked several times to see if I was dreaming.
My wolf, on the other hand, was running around howling with excitement.
"H-how?" stuttered I, looking at Evelyn and at my mother, "I... my period..."
My mom shook her head and smiled gently, "I guess you saw some blood spotting and assumed it was your period. Spotting is normal in the first few weeks of pregnancy, sweetie."
I swallowed hard and looked down at the test again.
"If it makes you feel better, you can take a few more tests to confirm the results," Evelyn said and knelt down next to me. "I did at least ten because I was so shocked."
I nodded slowly and shakily stood up, "I'll do a few more."

I'd never been so surprised in my life. I took six more tests, all of which showed the same result.
Positive.
As I studied the seven tests repeatedly, my shock began to fade, and excitement took the place of emotion.
How far along was I? Would the baby be a boy or a girl? What were we going to name?
I could feel the tears running down my cheeks like little waterfalls, but I didn't bother to wipe them away.
I could only concentrate on how happy
I felt and how happy Zack would be when he found out we'd a mini version of ourselves.
A puppy that was a product of our love.
"See, I told you you'd be pregnant," Evelyn said triumphantly, "I call it BFI or Best Friend Intuition."
I gave her a big smile, "I just can't believe it. I really thought I wasn't."
My mom wiped her tears as she laughed,
"You smelled a little different when you arrived, but I assumed it was because you were completely covered. It was such a small, faint change in your smell that I didn't think about it."
I shook my head and felt my cheeks hurt because the smile wouldn't leave my face.
There's nothing quite like the joy of finding out you're getting a puppy.
Absolutely nothing.
