Her Alpha Mate 41
Juilet:
I suppressed a groan as I pricked myself again with the needle.
Suddenly I remembered why I always pretended to be sick when I was invited to these stupid sewing meetings.
My fingers always had more holes than the fabric had stitches.
But alas, these meetings were the only place to get all the juicy gossip. These old women had nothing better to do than talk about anything and everything, and it fit perfectly with the little investigation I'd going on.
"So Juilet, how is your grandma doing? Is she enjoying life in the human city?"
When I'd left the mountains with Gigi, I told everyone that we were going to visit my grandma who lived on the other side of the country in a small town. This wasn't a complete lie, because I was planning on visiting my grandma, only I wasn't coming back.
But of course, all my plans were thrown out the window when I found Reece. I let out a soft sigh and felt my heart pound at the thought of him. He was so perfect, and then there was me.
"Juilet?"
I jerked my head up, "What?"
The lady whose name I'd forgotten tilted her head, "Your grandma, how is she?"
"She's doing great ma'am, still sewing like crazy," I grinned, lying through my teeth.
The woman nodded, "Of course. Her needle is almost an extension of her arm. I'm sure Gigi will learn to sew in no time. Oh, I must tell you how nice it's that little Gigi wanted to stay with her grandma. These days, young people don't have time for us old people."
Had she called me old? I was almost fifty years younger than she was!
"Well, Gigi got along very well with Nana.
Especially after Mom and Dad died," I said, sucking on my bleeding finger.
The woman shook her head sympathetically, "I can't imagine what it's like for you two. When I was your parents' age, there were no mistresses and no cheating. Each was loyal to the other."
I pursed my lips, "That must've been nice."
"It was," she sighed, "it really was. No illegitimate children to worry about. No surprise half-siblings to let loose on your kids... speaking of which, did you see any of your half-siblings after you got back?"
The moment the words left her mouth, I knew she was just out for gossip and didn't really care because she knew I didn't get along with my half-siblings.
I rolled my eyes inwardly as I felt her eyes trying to penetrate my head, as if she wanted to look into my mind to see if there was anything good there.
Little did she know that the only good thing she'd find was the half-naked images of Reece that had lodged themselves in my brain.
It was hard to forget those memories when the man completely pulled off the look with no shirt and sweatpants.
"No, I haven't seen them, ma'am, and I hope I won't either."
She nodded slowly and turned back to her sewing, as if she'd gotten all the information she needed.
I set aside my sewing and sighed at the sight of my red thumb. It was probably best to call it a day before I couldn't feel it anymore.
I stood up and stretched my arms as two women whispering frantically in the corner caught my attention. They kept looking around as if they didn't want anyone to eavesdrop, which obviously meant I should be listening in.
Luckily for me, the water cooler was right next to them, so I stood up and pretended to walk over to get a drink.
They didn't seem to mind that I was standing so close, or they hadn't noticed me. I squatted down, lifted the tap and leaned closer to them.
"....Douglas has changed plans again. My son is starting to get worried. I mean, he said we were going to attack next week, now he says we're going to attack tomorrow."
I almost choked on my water.
The two ladies stopped talking and stared at me, and I gave them an embarrassed smile, "I choked too fast."
They nodded and started talking about a completely different topic.
Oh great. Just when I was about to learn something useful.
I wiped my hands on my pants and went back to my chair, "I'm going to call it a night. I've to make dinner."
The lady next to me nodded and I quickly left the building.
I'd to find Douglas. What was he up to?
As I walked toward his house, I heard loud yelling and cheering. I frowned and headed toward the bonfire area to find out why they were having a bonfire tonight when they were supposedly going to attack tomorrow.
When I reached the campfire site, I saw a huge crowd of griffins drinking like crazy and cheering something our pathetic leader said.
I crossed my arms and stared at the crowd while watching Douglas raise his arms again. "We'll be immortal!"
More cheers.
"No species will ever be able to defeat us again! We'll be invincible!"
The roar grew louder.
"All of them," Douglas paused dramatically,
"All will worship us.
Obviously, they'd all lost their minds.
People wondered why I thought Douglas was a terrible leader. That was the reason. What leader would let his warriors drink before a battle?
"Even Lord Silvius will go down on his knees for us. He will bow before the immortals!"
This was the moment when I had to intervene.
"He is a lord. He's already an immortal, you fool!" I yelled over the cheers.
The noise died down, and everyone turned to stare at me as I leaned against a tree, grinning. If only they were not so drunk, they would have realized that Douglas was disrespecting our lord.
"Ah, Juilet, I heard you were back," Douglas slurred, "how are you?"
I rolled my eyes, "Fine, before I saw you."
"How's our grandma?"
"She's my grandma, you asshole. Not yours."
"Ah, but I am your half-brother. So she's my half-grandma, too."
"Oh, put a sock in it, Douglas."
He chuckled and stumbled over to the icebox to grab another bottle of beer. I decided to take the opportunity to leave before he came back to ask more questions.
I never told anyone in the Wind Winder
Pack that Douglas Kane was my half-brother. I did not want them to think I was helping him just because we had the same father.
Hopefully Reece had gotten my message and was not upset that I had not woken him up when I left. In that note I explained everything - why I was leaving, what I was going to do, etc.
I did not want to leave the note somewhere where it might fall into the wrong hands, so I gave it to a nice pack warrior named Raymond, who said he would give it to Reece as soon as he saw it.
I sighed and stared at the moon.
I had to go and warn Freya one more time.
The werewolves would not lose.
Not on my watch.
