Her Alpha Mate 49
*One week Later*
Freya:
Even though the griffins were gone, our stress level hadn't dropped.
There was so much to do when we returned to the pack.
Of course, first we'd to let our mothers cry for us for a few minutes. Then my dad refused to let me go - his wolf was pissed off and in overprotective father mode.
After that, I'd to deal with Zack, who basically freaked out every time I left the house.
We were busy trying to get the pack back to normal, so we were constantly on the run. I went to the pack hospital almost every day to help and have blood drawn so it could be used to heal the more serious injuries. Chance and Reece were busy making sure all the evacuated pack members got back safely and that all the funeral arrangements were in order for the pack warriors who'd died the night I disappeared.
Zack, on the other hand, was trying to reach Margaret and members of other species so that we could make a blood treaty so that we knew that no one would attack us again for my blood. So far, the vampires had agreed, but the dragons were a little harder to convince - they liked the idea of being able to burn down an entire country in a matter of seconds.
Zack worked to convince them that they didn't need that much power.
We hadn't heard from the Griffins since we blew up the mountains. A group of trackers kept an eye on them as a precaution, but they'd nothing suspicious to report so far. After we returned to the pack, we were worried that the Griffins would come back, but Juilet had assured us that the mountain we'd blown up was where they stored all their weapons and explosives. By blowing them up, we rendered them defenseless.
"Hello, my delicious angel."
I raised an eyebrow and turned my head to see Zack, who was standing behind me. He pursed his lips as if deep in thought and shook his head, "Nah, that's a mouthful."
He'd given up the nickname Sweet Pea because it wasn't meaningful enough to him, and tried to find something else for me to do.
"You know, you could just call me by my name," I said, kissing him on the cheek before turning back to the dishes. He sighed and grabbed the dish towel to help dry.
"But everyone does that, I want something that only I can call you," he mumbled.
I chuckled, "You've got plenty of time to pick a nickname. You'll be with me for more than a few decades."
"I guess so, but look at Xavier. He just found his partner and he already has a nickname for her."
Zack had had Xavier evacuated with the other pack members that night because he didn't want to risk his brother's life, but it was surprising that he hadn't even put up a fight.
His wolf had begged him to go with the other pack members, so he'd, only to find that his mate was waiting in the other pack. She was a sweet girl and didn't mind that Xavier couldn't see her - she was just happy to find her mate.
"Obviously Xavier was better prepared for his mate than you were," I said, trying not to laugh at the annoyed look on his face.
"I'll come up with something. Margaret responded to my message, by the way," he said, drying the last of his plate and wrapping his arms around my waist.
"What did she say?"
He rested his chin on my shoulder, "That
Beta Damien's son has golden blood for some other reason. She was very vague, but it sounds like he's a journey of his own."
I frowned, "That sounds... discouraging."
"It does, but for now, we can only cross that bridge when the time comes."
In my mind, I prayed that the baby didn't have to go through what we'd just been through. It wasn't fair to have to be on guard for the rest of his life.
"I do have some good news, though. The dragons have finally agreed to sign the contract. I've sent two trackers to both the vampires and the dragons. Once we've their fingerprints in the blood, we can store it in a safe place."
"Sounds good," I grumbled in agreement.
"I've recalled all our foreign trackers. The funerals are over the weekend, so I told them to be back on time. I'm looking forward to you meeting some of my old friends."
I smiled and reached for the cutting board, "If they're anything like the rest of the pack, we'll get along just fine."
The front door opened and loud footsteps came down the hall. Zack groaned and lifted his head to look at the person, "What're you doing here? Doesn't anyone have their own place? It's like my house has become a hangout."
"I've told you before. Don't give me the key if you don't want me to come in," Chance grinned and sat down on the counter next to where I was slicing carrots, "What're you cooking, sweetie?"
Hudson growled at this term of endearment, and I felt his arms tighten around me. I resisted the urge to roll my eyes and gently shrugged my shoulders so I wouldn't be tied down.
"My special delicious homemade chicken soup," I answered Chance proudly, dropping the carrots into a bowl.
"What's so special about that?" he asked, raising an eyebrow.
"You'll see."
"Chance," Zack said slowly, "why are your eyes so red?"
I stopped cutting and looked at Chance. He'd dark circles under his eyes and the red veins in his eyes were clearly visible. It looked like he couldn't sleep because something was bothering him.
The smile on Chance's face disappeared and he rubbed his eyes with a sigh, "I didn't sleep last night because of my wolf."
Zack tilted his head, "What was wrong with him?"
"I don't know, damn it. He was walking around all night and wouldn't say what was wrong. It's driving me crazy."
"I think I know why," Zack said, a small grin forming on his face.
Chance narrowed his eyes, "Yeah?"
"You're going to find your partner soon."
His eyes widened, "How? There's no one new in the pack. I went through the whole pack today and didn't feel a connection with anyone."
A thought dawned on me, "Unless your mate is in the group from abroad."
Chance's face changed from shocked to excited in seconds, "You're right! My wolf started acting funny when I found out all the trackers came back."
"I guess we'll just have to wait, then," said Zack.
Zack said, patting Chance on the shoulder.
"Oh moon goddess. I'll have to tell my father. I'll see you later. Freya, save me some of that soup."
He ran out the door without another word.
"Well then," Zack said, giving me a small grin, "Since everyone seems to be finding their partners, I finally have you to myself."
I raised an eyebrow, "Meaning?"
He leaned over and pinned me against the counter with his arms, "Don't you think it's time to christen the bed?"
My stomach tingled with excitement, but I knew the timing wasn't right.
"How about after the funeral and then the
Alpha Ball?"
He groaned and leaned his head against mine, "Teasing."
I chuckled and kissed his lips before turning to finish making the soup.
