Chapter 010 Hidden truth

The following morning, Ethan arrived at the Smith family in his discreet Bentley to visit.

As soon as he entered, he saw Bernice lying on the sofa, with Norton sitting beside her. Norton comforted Bernice in a gentle voice, "Bernice, you're safe now. Just rest assured, I've saved you."

Seeing this scene, Ethan frowned unconsciously.
"Ethan, where the hell were you, were you a useless piece of trash? When Bernice faced such a dangerous situation, you were hiding like a coward?!” Jane, upon seeing Ethan, couldn’t contain her anger and scolded him furiously.

Ethan remained silent, but merely glanced at Norton and asked, “What happened? How did Mr. Jones end up here?”

Jane angrily snapped, “You have the nerve to ask?! Yesterday, Bernice went to demand the money owed from Jacob at the Dragon Chamber of Commerce, but he intoxicated her with alcohol, a whole bottle of it! If Mr. Jones hadn’t shown up in time to rescue her, who knows what might have happened to her!”

Robert’s face also darkened, and he looked at Ethan with a hint of displeasure.

In a low voice, Robert said, “Ethan, we need to have a serious talk.”

“Since I entrusted Bernice to you for care, you must take on this responsibility,” Norton quickly said with a smile. ”Uncle, Aunt, you don’t have to worry. Bernice and I are good friends, so this is what I should do! And we shouldn’t blame Mr. McKellen. Even if he tried to intervene, it probably wouldn’t make a difference.”

After hearing Norton’s words, Ethan couldn’t help but laugh and shake his head. “I rescued Bernice from Jacob. Where did you come from?”

These words stunned everyone present.

However, Norton chuckled and said, ”Mr. McKellen just arrived at the Smith family and needs some recognition to establish himself. I understand. Hmm... This has nothing to do with me, it’s Mr. McKellen’s credit. I don’t know anything about it. I just happened to come to visit Bernice today!”

Norton’s move of retreat turned into an advance, causing Jane’s dissatisfaction with Ethan to reach its peak.

“Ethan, you don’t have any ability, but since Robert insists on marrying Bernice off to you, I have nothing to say. People can be incompetent, but they can’t lack shame! Clearly, it was Mr. Jones who saved Bernice, yet you claim it as your accomplishment. How embarrassing! What ability do you have to provoke the Dragon Chamber of Commerce?” Jane directly attacked Ethan, leaving him completely defenseless and embarrassed.

Norton’s face displayed a smug smile, coincidentally, Bernice woke up at this moment, still suffering from a severe headache.

As soon as she realized she was at home, she breathed a sigh of relief and vaguely remembered last night’s events. She looked at Norton with confusion and asked, ”Mr. Jones, did you save me last night?”

Norton smiled helplessly and replied, ”Bernice, it wasn’t me. It was Mr. McKellen who brought you back.”

Jane loudly exclaimed, “Mr. Jones, you are honorable and willing to support this worthless person, but I cannot stand to watch!”

“Bernice, it was Mr. Jones who saved you last night. Otherwise, who knows what could have happened to you? ”””Your father found you a good man, but he conveniently shut off his phone all night, acting all relaxed.”

Bernice also faintly remembered that a man had saved her. After hearing her mother’s words, she couldn’t help but express her gratitude towards Norton with a grateful gaze.

“I also seem to remember a little. Thank you, Mr. Jones.” Bernice sighed in relief and thanked Norton.

Jane interrupted her, “You better remember that it was Mr. Jones and not Ethen who saved you!”

Hearing this, he became even more eager and asked Ethan, “Do you have anything else to say now?”

Ethan shrugged indifferently and replied, “I had Dorothy bring Bernice back yesterday. If you don’t believe me, ask her.”

Norton nodded at Ethan and said, “I’ll give Dorothy a call later and remind her to publicly proclaim that you saved Bernice.”

Ethan glanced at Norton with disdain in his eyes, thinking to himself, what a clown.

Bernice glanced at Ethan with contempt. ‘Not only was this guy useless, but he also had thick skin. It was obvious that Norton saved her from Jacob’s hands, yet he insisted on claiming credit. How shameless!

‘It would be best if Father could see through this man’s true colors soon and then I could ask for a divorce. It would be much easier that way.’

Robert patted Ethan’s shoulder and earnestly advised, “Ethan, a person can be penniless, but they must have ambition.”

Ethan replied, “Uncle makes a valid point.” He smiled, completely disliked arguing about these things.

“Don’t worry about the twenty million dollars, Bernice. I said I would take care of it for you,” Norton said with a smile to Bernice.

“Thank you.” Bernice breathed a sigh of relief, but her expression suddenly changed, and she said, “I remember something. Last night, I think, I might have smashed Jacob's head with a bottle!"

As soon as she said this, Robert furrowed his brows deeply, and Jane gasped in shock.

Norton's smile instantly became awkward, and he dryly comforted her, saying, "It's all right. I'll talk to Mr. Dragon about it later. It won't be a problem."

Jane said, "Thank you, Mr. Jones!"

At that moment, a Mercedes Benz stopped outside.

Dorothy got out of the car, entered the Smith family's gate, and brought some fruits with her. She smiled and said, "Bernice, I came to visit you!"

"Dorothy is here! Come in and have a seat!" Jane smiled when she saw Dorothy and welcomed her inside.

The Bush family also had some influence in Boston and had a partnership with the Smith family. Dorothy and Bernice had a good personal relationship, so she was well-liked by the Smith family.

Bernice wasn't entirely sure if Norton was the one who saved her yesterday. After all, she was too drunk before passing out and couldn't see the person's appearance.

She immediately pulled Dorothy to sit by her side and said, "Dorothy, you were with me yesterday. You didn't drink much and should remember things clearly."

After a moment of hesitation, Dorothy nodded and said, "Yes."

In a solemn tone, Bernice turned to Dorothy and asked, "Tell me the truth, who saved me last night?"

Robert shifted his gaze to Dorothy. Ethan shrugged his shoulders, not caring about what Norton did. Of course, he wouldn’t mind if Dorothy spoke the truth and exposed Norton’s ugly face. He was curious to see that.

"Do you honestly not remember anything?" Dorothy smiled at Bernice and asked.

"After I drank a bottle of whiskey yesterday, everything became a blur!" Bernice said with a bitter smile.
