Chapter 137 Marshall's Reprimand
"No, if it's a fake watch, how come there are invoices from the Rolex counter at the Morgan Business Center and bills from the POS machine?" Just then, Sofia, curious, took out the invoice and bills from the packaging bag and mumbled to herself.
"This can't be fake; they can't replicate this detail."
"Sofia, you don't know, those who make high-quality knockoffs can copy anything; this is a piece of cake for them." Cody reached out to snatch the receipt and bill from Sofia's hands, boasting with a smug smile.
But midway through his words, he suddenly froze.
"Fuck! Shit! This is really a receipt from the Rolex counter in Morgan Commerce Center. This isn't fake! Six thousand eight hundred dollars! A watch for over six thousand dollars? Kevin, you're truly lavish. Wouldn't it be nicer to spend this money on a car?" Cody shrieked in astonishment.
"What? Is this real? Marshall was taken aback. He snatched the receipt from Cody's hands. The next moment, he opened his eyes and shook his head in disbelief.
Victoria stared enviously at the watch in Lillian's hands. Although she could afford it, somehow, the idea of spending over six thousand dollars on a watch was unbearable.
For them, a luxury like a Rolex was certainly alluring, but actually spending that amount seemed like a waste. With that type of money, they believed investing in luxury cars or real estate was the better path; splurging on luxuries was simply throwing money away.
However, despite their belief that Kevin was squandering his wealth, they couldn't help but envy the watch in Lillian's possession.
"Kevin, tell me the truth. Is this watch really over six thousand dollars?" asked Lillian with concern, feeling the watch a bit heavy, yet the more she looked at it, the more she couldn't let it go.
"Of course, it's real, Mom; why would I ever give you a fake? Just wear it. Women should buy more jewelry; this watch suits you perfectly. You look noble, beautiful, generous, and elegant! Only when you wear it does it reveal its true beauty, as it's meant to accentuate your grace and beauty," Kevin said with a smile as he helped Lillian put on the watch, then nonchalantly said to everyone, "Let's not talk about it anymore. it's just a watch. Come on. Let's have some cake."
Kevin gestured to the waiter to cut and distribute the cake to everyone.
Everyone took their seats again.
This time, the atmosphere had taken a strange turn.
The previously warm mood shifted to surprise, disbelief, envy, and worry.
Everyone was deep in thought, weighing heavily on their minds.
After a brief silence, it was Marshall who stood up first.
"Kevin, I need to say something. You might not like hearing it, but as an elder, I must give you some guidance," Marshall said with an authoritative stance, standing up with a wine glass in hand to speak to Kevin.
"Go ahead, Uncle Marshall," Kevin quickly stood up with a laugh and humbly toasted with Marshall.
Even though Kevin was somewhat annoyed with Marshall, he didn't want to disrespect an elder in this setting. He behaved with extreme humility.
Seeing Kevin's respectful attitude, Marshall's expression grew even colder and prouder. After a light cough, he directly said, "You organized everything well today, and everyone is happy. You are a competent man, very nice to your mother-in-law, and we all see that."
At this point, Marshall's tone shifted, his expression turning stern. "However, you shouldn’t have spent so extravagantly on such things as this grand banquet hall and this abundance of dishes. They must have cost at least fifteen thousand dollars! As a business owner myself, I wouldn't even consider spending so much at such a place."
"We're all family; there's no need for you to show off to us. We would be just as happy with a simple meal."
"Besides, you still haven't bought a house, you're driving a little Toyota, and yet you've bought a watch worth over fifty thousand dollars for your mom. Your generosity for your mother-in-law is clear, but this is sheer recklessness with money. How much do you even earn? Are you getting carried away? I run a business and make hundreds of thousands a year, but I wear just a Longines that's over five thousand dollars."
"Am I unable to afford a better one? Am I poorer than you? What I know is that money should not be spent recklessly. If you have the capability, buy a car for your mother and Scarlett and get yourself a house. Buying a watch is pointless."
"I might have been quite blunt with my words today, but as an elder and a relative, I am genuinely looking out for your best interests! If I didn't see you as a younger one, I wouldn't bother offering you these words of advice. Do you understand, Kevin? If you can take heed of what I'm saying, it will benefit you for life. If you cannot, there will come a time when you regret not taking my advice."
