Chapter 31 A Change of Mentality

Does money truly hold such importance?
If he had a choice, Kevin would have preferred a family that didn’t care so much about money. He preferred one that valued kinship more.
However, in this era, everyone’s minds were preoccupied with houses, cars, and cash. What's left for family affection? If one had no money and no talent, everyone would ridicule him and look down on him.
Once one had money and achieved something, they all swarmed to curry favor with him, scheming to take advantage of his success.
Kevin was unable to feel the faintest trace of familial warmth. Instead, it was Scarlett who didn’t mind him being penniless and who didn’t show excessive pride or joy when he was rich. Instead, her face was always tinged with worry.
Watching Lillian boast endlessly about her son-in-law’s accomplishments, Victoria couldn’t help but feel sour. For many years, the Gomez family has always overshadowed the Foster family. Yet, unexpectedly, today, Kevin had brought the Foster family a moment of pride.
After dinner, Scarlett and Natalie helped Lillian clean up the table, then prepared a variety of fruits and snacks with coffee, sitting together again.
Because of the events that had just transpired, both families found the situation rather awkward.
In the past, the trio from the Gomez family would have typically berated Kevin, flaunting their sense of superiority and urging Kevin to find a job.
But today, when the two families sat together, they realized they had nothing to talk about. The atmosphere became somewhat uncomfortable.
"Where's Natalie? I haven't seen her," Victoria suddenly asked, perhaps to break the awkward silence.
It was only then Kevin remembered Natalie was on summer break. Why hadn’t he seen her all day, and why wasn’t she home yet?
“She went to a classmate’s gathering. Don’t worry about her. Nowadays, these kids are smart. I don’t even know if she can make it into Harvard or Cambridge this year,” Lillian waved her hand and said with a laugh.
"We won’t be staying much longer today. We still have some things to take care of at home, so we’ll be taking our leave," said Victoria, exchanging glances with Marshall, as they both got up with a smile.
"You don’t have to leave in a hurry. I’d like you to stay a bit longer. It's rare for you to visit us. Plus, Lily wanted to ask Kevin about writing," Lillian, experiencing a rare moment of vindictive pleasure, eagerly tried to convince them to stay.
"No, Lillian, Lily, and I are going out. We won’t impose any further.” Cody, who had been uncharacteristically silent during the meal, was so angry and eager to leave as soon as Lillian showed signs of holding them up and quickly refused.
"Alright. If you have things to do, go ahead. We’ll visit you some other time. Lily, you can always discuss writing with me." Kevin couldn’t wait for them to leave.
"Kevin, could I add you on WhatsApp? I could ask you questions about writing in the future," Lily asked with a naive and eager look as she held her phone out to Kevin.
"Of course," Kevin said, the words he had been waiting to hear. He immediately pulled out his phone and added her on WhatsApp.
Watching the family climb into their car dejectedly, Sofia couldn’t help but laugh, "Kevin, you were so cool today! Finally, we have had a moment to shine! Let's see how they show off their superiority now. I was absolutely delighted watching them being bested like that."
"Kevin, well done! When you said you'd buy me a Mercedes yesterday, I thought you were just pacifying me. I can’t believe that you earned so much secretly! Dad was still asking you to work at his company yesterday, but the annual salary there can’t even match what you make in a month! You silly boy, why didn't you say so yesterday? You must have felt so wronged."
Now, looking at her son-in-law, Lillian felt satisfied; the more she observed him, the more she liked him. She affectionately took Kevin’s hand and spoke with a warm smile.
"It's really not that much. I didn't want to say anything. I was waiting to buy you a Mercedes before I told you. I want to give you a surprise. But they said too much today. It's one thing to tease me, but when they started talking about you and Scarlett, I couldn't help but speak up. I don’t care if it would embarrass them, but I can’t embarrass Dad. How could I possibly contradict him in front of so many people?"
Kevin replied to Lillian with a sincere smile.
"You’re a good kid! Scarlett is lucky to marry you. Your father-in-law and I are blessed to have such a fine son-in-law. It's so lucky." Lillian, moved by Kevin’s thoughtful and filial manner, began to shed tears with happiness.
[Closeness with Lillian: +20 (80 closeness)]
[Closeness with Sofia: +2 (93 closeness)]
Not only did Kevin’s words greatly increase Lillian’s affection, but Sofia also gained an additional 2 points of closeness.
Kevin was overjoyed.
Ever since Kevin had the system, he felt that his entire mentality had changed. And now, with a reward of a million dollars and confidence surging, his manner of speaking had become much more polished.
