Chapter 32 Natalie Is Drunk
“Kevin, come here for a moment,” Scarlett’s serious voice pulled Kevin from his thoughts.
Having been together with his wife for over a year, Kevin naturally knew what questions Scarlett would ask.
"Kevin, is the money really from your book royalties?" Scarlett looked at him earnestly, her eyes filled with skepticism.
"Of course, they're my royalties. What else could they be? If only I were that lucky to win it in the lottery," Kevin replied playfully, squeezing Scarlett’s tender cheeks.
Facing his wife’s questioning didn’t bother Kevin; in fact, Scarlett’s concern warmed his heart.
"You’d better not be lying to me. It’s fine if we're poor. My salary is enough to support us. Don't you dare earn money through dishonest means," Scarlett said earnestly.
"Don’t worry. Am I a bad person? Besides, I’m always writing at home. Where would I find the chance to get involved in anything crooked?" Kevin reassured her with a gentle embrace.
"That’s good then. Don’t waste money now that you have it. We still haven’t bought a house, and about buying a Mercedes for Mom, we’d better postpone it. Don’t actually buy one. A car’s just a consumable; I think Toyota’s still good. Buying a Mercedes is just for vanity. It’s pointless." Scarlett continued to advise Kevin earnestly.
"Okay, I got it. We’ll buy a house first, then a car," Kevin replied with a chuckle.
At that moment, a phone’s ringtone broke their conversation. Sofia, who was about to press Kevin further, took out her phone and muttered, "It’s Natalie. She’s probably asking for money again."
Answering the call, Scarlett immediately said, "Natalie, when do you come home? It’s past eight already! It's not safe for a girl to be out so late."
"I have a drink and feel dizzy. Can you come pick me up?" Kevin heard Natalie’s slurred voice from the phone. She sounded intoxicated.
Background noises were loud, with the voices of a boy and several girls seemingly urging Natalie to drink more.
Kevin’s brow furrowed immediately.
"Natalie! How dare you drink alcohol? What on earth are you playing at? You've been way out of line today," Scarlett rebuked over the phone, irritation evident in her voice.
"Scarlett, I want to go home; come get me quickly." Natalie’s tone was impatient.
"Natalie, where are you?" Kevin took the phone from Scarlett, asking gently.
"Kevin, I’m at the Jade Lake Boutique Hotel, room 108. I don't want to drink anymore! Get away from me!"
Natalie’s response was hazy. Kevin could hear a boy's and several girls' voices. They continually persuaded her to drink, and the noise nearly drowned out her voice. Before Kevin could finish speaking, the line went dead.
With a frown, Kevin handed the phone back to Scarlett. "It sounds like they’re forcing her to drink. I’ll go over and get her."
"Kevin, what happened? Did Natalie get herself into trouble again?" Sofia approached with curiosity.
"Natalie's drunk. I'm going to get her."
Without further explanation to Sofia, Kevin rushed to the garage, drove out with urgency, and sped toward the Jade Lake Boutique Hotel.
Kevin knew what it was like; he had been through high school and college and had seen his share of such incidents.
Natalie was so beautiful and a good student. And most importantly, she was so naive. She would undoubtedly attract the attention of boys who liked her but couldn’t have her. These gatherings were prime opportunities for them to scheme.
Even her female friends and classmates, out of jealousy, could harbor ill intentions.
The more he dwelled on what he had witnessed back in high school, the more anxious he became, pushing the accelerator to the floor as he raced to Natalie’s aid.
