Chapter 76 A Surprise for His Mother-In-Law's Birthday
Once back home, Kevin found his mother-in-law, wife, and two sisters-in-law waiting for him, and he was suddenly filled with warmth.
"Kevin, why have you just come back? Where did you go this afternoon?" As soon as Kevin stepped through the door, Sofia teased him with a giggly inquisition.
"Where else could I have been? You all had a meal without me, so I went out and had some food. Unexpectedly, I ran into an old friend and ended up having a coffee and chat." Kevin offered a casual excuse, his voice tinged with guilt, as he stealthily glanced at Scarlett and Natalie. Seeing that his wife didn't show any sign of suspicion and the family didn't display any odd behaviors, he finally allowed his anxious heart to settle.
"Kevin, come sit down. Let me serve you with some food," said Lillian with a smile. He rose to serve Kevin's meal, which flattered Kevin into an immediate, earnest follow.
"Mom, I can get it myself." Kevin felt as if he were in a dream.
This was the first time Lillian had treated him so kindly. In the past, it was already a good day if she didn't give him a cold shoulder or scoff at him as useless.
Today, she had taken the initiative to serve him food, which seemed like a monumental breakthrough. His actions from the day before must have earned her considerable approval.
Indeed, in this world, it often took wealth to command respect and favor from others. When one had money, everyone indulged and sought to please him. Without it, one became the object of disdain, even in the eyes of his family sometimes.
"Kevin, tomorrow is mom's birthday; what gift are you planning to give her?" Sofia reminded Kevin with a smile.
"Yeah, Kevin, Dad will still be on a business trip and won't be back, so Mom's birthday plans are up to you to handle, okay?" added Scarlett with a laugh.
"At your command! I will make sure Mom's birthday is perfectly and meticulously organized." It dawned on Kevin that tomorrow was likely his mother-in-law Lillian's birthday. This time last year, his father-in-law took Lillian and the rest of the family out to a wonderful restaurant for a lavish meal and cake, leaving Kevin alone at home. Kevin was infuriated at the time but dared not voice his frustration.
This year, he was determined to regain some pride and vent his frustration.
"Mom, it's your birthday tomorrow, right? Please take a day off. I want to take you all somewhere to surprise you. Tomorrow is all about you," Kevin hinted, his voice lowered to a mysterious whisper, after accepting the bowl of food from Lillian.
Now, Kevin had over 1.8 million dollars in PayPal, more than enough to buy a Mercedes E300L sedan. Even two would be within his reach.
Kevin planned to secure the Mercedes for his mother-in-law tomorrow.
After triumphing over a married woman, Kevin was brimming with confidence and felt that winning over his lonely mother-in-law might be considerably easier than winning over Sofia.
And if he managed to win over his mother-in-law by engaging in an illicit affair with her, it would be to his advantage in the future. He could rely on it to train or manipulate Lillian to help him discipline two sisters-in-law and his wife, Scarlett. Even if things got out of hand sometimes, having the mother-in-law cover for him would certainly be beneficial.
"Ha, looks like you have had a plan. Why keep it a secret from us all?" said Lillian, a bashful flush coloring her cheeks as she gave her Kevin a coy glance, her heart racing uncontrollably, painting her cheeks with an immediate blush.
Kevin's words made Lillian speculate with anticipation, yet they also filled her with eagerness for tomorrow's plans.
"Top secret! If I tell you, then it wouldn't be a surprise, would it? Just listen to me. Take a day off tomorrow. I'll take you somewhere nice in the morning. I promise it will be a splendid surprise." With a secretive edge, Kevin confided gently beside Lillian's ear.
The warmth of his breath on her sensitive auricle sent a blush across Lillian's face and a tingle through her body.
"Okay! I will listen to you." Despite some embarrassment and fear about the intimate implications, Lillian found herself agreeing to Kevin's request.
Now that the family was treating him more warmly, the only exceptions were his sanctimonious father-in-law, who wasn't home very often, and his younger sister-in-law Natalie, who still seemed somewhat hostile toward him. As far as Kevin was concerned, his father-in-law's attitude was irrelevant. However, Natalie was always at home, guarding herself against him like he was a wolf, obstructing his access to Sofia, and trying in every way to undermine his status in the household. Under Natalie's sharp and spirited gaze, Kevin often felt uncomfortably exposed, as if his thoughts were transparent to her, keeping him constantly on edge.
This feeling kept Kevin anxious and slightly afraid of Natalie, always concerned that she might expose what he had done to her while inebriated.
After the family dinner, Kevin went straight upstairs to prepare for Lillian's birthday.
Firstly, a celebration wouldn't be complete without a meal and a cake. Now that he's more financially stable, Kevin didn't hesitate and promptly called up a nearby 5-star hotel to reserve a table. He also ordered a large cake to go along with it.
After arranging everything, Kevin picked up his phone and began browsing through Mercedes-Benz information on a car selection app.
