Chapter 54 The Pitfalls of Being a Fawning Admirer
"So comfortable. "
The genial sunlight filtered through the gaps in the curtains, streaming into the bedroom as Kevin stretched languorously and climbed out of bed.
He glanced at the clock on the nightstand; it was already past 10 in the morning.
After a night of vigorous passion initiated by Scarlett, Kevin woke up feeling refreshed and invigorated, as if he had been revitalized.
On the nightstand, there lay a heartwarming breakfast prepared by his wife.
Today, it was sushi. Kevin couldn't be bothered to get up and brush his teeth; he just grabbed a piece and chewed it contentedly. It tasted delicious, invigorating him with passion and novelty, just like his wife had last night.
Since acquiring the system, everything really seemed to be developing in a positive direction.
Life was like the weather transitioning from overcast to clear skies, suddenly filled with brightness and anticipation. Every day was infused with passion!
While savoring the breakfast Scarlett had prepared, Kevin glanced at his phone.
Evelyn: [Good morning!]
Evelyn: [What are you up to?]
Evelyn: [Why aren't you replying?]
There were three unread messages from Evelyn, all sent in the morning.
It was already past 10 a.m. Without a timely response, Evelyn was bound to be angry!
The moment Kevin saw the time, a wave of unease washed over him. His previous impromptu relationships, arranged through Facebook, were always marked by a pressing haste. As conversations deepened with the fall of night, he would quickly propose meetings, leading to after-midnight encounters — either secret meetings in a vehicle or directly booking a room in a hotel.
But now, after getting married, sneaking out at night was hardly an option. Thus, Kevin could only take the opportunity to arrange meetups during the day when Scarlett was at work.
So, Kevin thought it was imperative not to ignore Evelyn. He had to be fully prepared and ready to reply to Evelyn at any moment.
Kevin: [Sorry, Evelyn. I've just seen your message. I just woke up. You misunderstand me. How could I not want to respond to you?]
Kevin hastily typed a long explanation, preparing to send it when the system once again intervened, stopping the message, and offered a tip.
[Tip: The host has entered the trap of being an obsequious admirer. Times have changed; winning a woman's heart does not mean incessantly flattering and prostrating oneself. In the end, this only leads to becoming a willing spare tire and ATM for them. A little bit of pride, giving a sense of your worth and nobility, will make the other party respect and value you more.]
[After a heated chat, a touch of indifference can create an illusion of scarcity, even compelling the other party to lower their own status and cater to you to win you over.]
[When dating, the most taboo is to unwittingly fall into the trap of being an obsequious admirer. Reducing oneself to such only guarantees a complete loss in the end.]
Reading the system's prompt, Kevin immediately realized his mistake.
Contemplating past experiences and the disheartening reality of honorable men being deceived by unscrupulous women, one was left to ponder how rogues effortlessly captivate an endless array of beauties while virtuous individuals encounter betrayal and duplicity.
On the one hand, these women would spend the money of the men who loved them and enjoy their attentiveness and care, while on the other hand, they would offer their bodies unreservedly to the bad guys like thirsty dogs.
Kevin hadn't understood why this happened before.
But now, after being prompted by the system, he was enlightened! Just like the majority of admiring supplicants, he had been deceived by TV dramas and sentimentally angsty literature. The dramas of his time mostly depicted a good man with earth-shattering love and care for a goddess.
Initially, the goddess would look down on the male lead, but eventually, she would be moved by his unyielding devotion, leading to a happily-ever-after.
Even worse, there were dramas that went mad in showing the man doing everything for the goddess, even risking his life and giving up everything for her.
However, despite the man's devotion, the goddess would still cheat with another, and not just once.
When caught by the male lead, he wouldn't hold her accountable. Instead, he would cry and beg the goddess not to leave him, pretending nothing happened! Heartlessly, she would leave the lead to be with the bad guy.
In the end, once the bad guy had enough and destroyed her, she would turn back to the male lead, and the story would end with them happily getting back together. Reflecting on it now, Kevin realized just how preposterously melodramatic those dramas were!
Putting himself in someone else's shoes, Kevin realized that men also covet what they couldn't have; the easily obtained were the least treasured.
On the contrary, the unscrupulous women seemed to be able to capture the adoration of most men all the time, leaving them utterly infatuated. This was a reflection of human nature! Those fairy-tale endings in TV dramas were nothing but the fantasies of hackneyed scriptwriters and naïve, wounded literary artists. It's a complete contradiction to human nature! Those who blindly worship ended up with nothing in the end!
