Chapter 89 Kevin’s Disdain for Male Chauvinism
"I'm still writing. It's going quite well. The royalties are a bit better than a salary, so it's just enough to get by," Kevin responded flippantly, signaling the waiter to start ordering.
Since they were there for a late-night meal, Kevin would rather focus on the food. This afternoon, Evelyn nearly exhausted Kevin, leaving him with the sole desire to indulge in a hearty barbecue meal to recharge. Later, he planned to return home and engage with Scarlett once more, refining their intimacy and enhancing Scarlett's prowess in sex.
"That's typical of a novelist. You always have a big talk. Earning a salary by scribbling stuff online. You don't really think people only earn a salary of two or three thousand a month now, do you? Speaking of myself, disregarding any benefits, I earn a monthly salary of fifteen thousand. Do you have such funds?" Aaron scoffed, expressing open disbelief.
"Do you make fifteen thousand dollars a month? Then I misspoke," Kevin said, scratching his head somewhat sheepishly.
Kevin wanted to say that he really had misspoken, for he took in two million dollars this month, claiming to make a bit more than an ordinary salary was indeed an understatement. But it was earned through less than conventional means, and he didn't feel the need to brag about it. Talking with someone as hypocritical as Aaron was simply dull.
He decided it was best to shift the conversation to Hazel, planting seeds of discord between her and Aaron to lay the groundwork for his next action.
"Scarlett, isn't that a Cartier watch? It's even my favorite model, the Ballon Bleu. Is it real or a knockoff? When did you become so extravagant, buying such an expensive watch."
Just then, Hazel noticed the Cartier watch on Scarlett's wrist and, with a look of amazement, grabbed Scarlett's wrist to admire it enthusiastically.
"I couldn't bear to buy it. It was Kevin who secretly got it for me. I'm heartbroken over its cost." Scarlett confessed as she carefully unfastened the Cartier watch from her wrist and handed it to Hazel.
"If it was Kevin who bought it? Then it's likely a counterfeit. Hazel, if you fancy it, I can purchase one for you as well. I spotted a friend on Facebook selling a piece with diamonds for only three to five thousand." Aaron cast a contemptuous glance at the watch, already convinced in his mind that it was a counterfeit.
"This is genuine."
After inspecting it closely for a while, Hazel looked up in surprise at Scarlett and Kevin, exclaiming, "Scarlett, Kevin really spoils you. The watch is worth over forty thousand dollars, and he actually went through with buying it?"
Hazel, a watch aficionado with a penchant for luxury and branded timepieces, particularly Cartier, could distinguish a genuine piece swiftly. Several of her colleagues at the hospital had bought the same model in both authentic and replicated forms, and it didn't take her long to discern that Scarlett's watch was indeed authentic.
The surest difference between a real Cartier and a fake could be found in its watch hands. A genuine Cartier's watch hands were finely detailed, uniformly round, and polished smoothly.
Scarlett's watch was evidently of impeccable craftsmanship. Even the typography on the back of the dial was finely executed.
A counterfeit simply could not achieve such detail.
"Crazy! Spending over forty thousand dollars on a watch? Wouldn't it be better to save for a nice car?" Aaron, seeing envy and jealousy on his wife's face, couldn't help but retort cynically.
The opportunity had arrived. Seeing a flicker of displeasure in Hazel's eyes, Kevin's lips curved into a slight smile. He quickly countered, "Aaron, you're wrong to say that. Everyone has different pursuits. You love cars, but you can't force others to feel the same way. An item's value isn't determined by what you think but by how one's spouse sees it. Scarlett loves watches, so I buy her watches. If she desired a car, I'd work my tail off to earn enough to buy her one. Whatever Scarlett likes is right, is valuable."
Kevin's behavior embodied the core disdain for male chauvinism that he learned during the fierce battles of despising masculinity on Twitter. Now, it seemed quite fitting to use this to disrupt the relationship between Hazel, who opposed deeply rooted male aversion, and the rather unrefined Aaron.
Nevertheless, there was a plethora of articles on Twitter. Kevin had delved into this genre extensively in preparation for writing a satirical novel.
Upon hearing Kevin's words, a spark of agreement immediately ignited in Hazel's eyes, and in her gaze towards Kevin, there was a newfound warmth.

"Nonsense! How can you spout such twisted logic? A watch doesn't hold the value of a car. No matter how expensive your watch is, it's just forty thousand dollars or so. My BMW cost 380,000 dollars." Aaron, provoked by Kevin's defiant look, was growing agitated.
