Chapter 55 Flirting With Evelyn

Understanding this changed Kevin's mindset instantly.
Upon seeing Evelyn's message, Kevin casually replied with a faint indifference: [Just woke up; you're quite early. I couldn't sleep last night.]
Then he promptly put his phone away without further explanation and got up to wash and get ready for the day.
After freshening up, Kevin checked his phone again.
Evelyn: [You are lazy. You are waking up so late. What were you doing last night?]
Evelyn: [Don't you have to work?]
Evelyn: [Why are you ignoring me again?]
Evelyn: [Aren't you working today?]
Evelyn: [Are you there? Talk to me.]
Observing the successive messages from Evelyn, Kevin smugly replied: [I'm self-employed.]
Evelyn: [What line of business are you in? How can you afford such freedom?]
Seeing Evelyn's prompt reply, Kevin didn’t rush to answer. Instead, he closed his phone and eavesdropped outside Natalie's room for a while.
Natalie's shoes were still in the stairwell, which likely meant she hadn't left the house yet, but no sounds were coming from her room. Probably, Kevin thought, she drank too much the night before and was still asleep.
Glancing at the clock and noting it was already 11 a.m., close to lunchtime, Kevin knocked on her door and called out, "Natalie, do you wake up? Let’s go have lunch."
Kevin was eager to see Natalie's current state and her closeness to himself. What he had done to Natalie last night was somewhat degrading, and he couldn’t help worrying whether Natalie would remember.
"I don't want to eat anything," came Natalie’s somewhat disdainful voice through the door.
Scratching his head awkwardly, Kevin felt embarrassed. Natalie's attitude towards him was still so hostile. Did Natalie have consciousness last night and remember what had happened?
But that didn't quite add up either. If Natalie knew about the despicable things he had done to her last night, she would've been furious, and given her fiery temper, she would have come out to slap him.
At that moment, Sofia heard the commotion and came upstairs. "Kevin, you finally woke up! If you had slept any longer, the lunch I made would have gone cold."
Sofia smiled as she approached Kevin, looking curiously at Natalie's door. She inquired, "Kevin, hasn’t Natalie gotten up yet?"
"Did you cook?" Kevin gazed at Sofia with a hint of incredulity. In Kevin's estimation, this was most certainly Sofia's maiden foray into culinary arts.
"What's the matter? Is there an issue? You know what? I made this for you with special care!"
Sofia prodded Kevin proudly. "Hurry up and go taste my cooking."
Kevin instantly felt a surge of warmth and happiness.
Sofia applied minimal makeup today and was wearing the new dress Kevin had bought her yesterday, looking even more fetching and lovely.
Recalling how Sofia had kissed him the night before, Kevin became bolder. Suddenly, he extended his arms to embrace her, pulled Sofia into his arms, looked deeply into her blushing and embarrassed face, and kissed her fervently.
"Kevin, no." But surprisingly, Sofia put her index finger to Kevin's lips, her lithe body smoothly dodging Kevin’s embrace.
"Kevin, remember that you're my brother-in-law. We mustn't do anything to betray my sister. Even if you like me, from now on, you must control your feelings! There's a saying that emotion arises from the heart but must be stopped by rituals. We must both restrain ourselves from now on. If you keep this up, I will have to avoid you."
Sofia playfully but seriously warned Kevin in a soft yet stern voice.
Kevin instantly understood Sofia's meaning. Sofia had feelings for him, and she was also attracted to him! However, because of their relationship, any overly intimate behavior would violate ethics and morality. Therefore, Sofia didn't want to betray her sister or disrupt the family. She had chosen to maintain a distance from Kevin, transforming her romantic feelings into familial affection.
As the saying goes, "Emotions start, but manners should end!" The moment Sofia embraced Kevin yesterday might have marked the final intimate gesture she decided to reserve for sealing off her innermost feelings towards Kevin.
With this realization, Kevin's heart sank.
This sense of gain and loss tormented him, more intense than the anguish of unrequited love for the school beauty he felt in high school. Naturally, Kevin was not willing to decidedly stop at his emotions and adhere to propriety.
However, now Kevin comprehended that in such circumstances, the more one found oneself in this situation, the more crucial it was to wait for a particular moment, a moment that allowed Sofia to set aside ethical norms, abandon shame and embarrassment, and seize the opportunity to act passionately without any restraint!
