Chapter 139 Confrontation
"This is something I didn't want to say. In fact, Kevin hasn't been making any money. His book writing isn't bringing in anything substantial. The other day, he bragged about making 400,00 dollars, so I took the trouble to check, and it turned out he hasn't written any noteworthy books at all. Lily is also well-versed in ebooks; to make that amount of money, you'd have to be a very famous author online. Yet, Kevin won't even tell us his pseudonym or what books he's written. The currently popular authors on Kindle Direct Publishing are all on our radar, and there's no sign of Kevin whatsoever."
"So, we've all been deceived by Kevin. His money is all borrowed from credit cards, federal credit cards, online lending platforms, and perhaps even high-interest loans. He was just trying to show off, pretending to be wealthy when he actually didn't have the money. If he continued like that and failed to pay up later on, what would we do? It would bring bad luck to you, Aunt and Scarlett. Should the whole family end up paying his debts for him? By showing off then, he might have enjoyed a good time, but in the end, if he had accumulated a lot of debt and run away, it would have been Aunt and Scarlett who suffered the consequences."
"What? Is this true? Cody, you can't just spout nonsense like that." Before Cody could finish, Victoria immediately stood up, excitement flashing in her eyes as she sharply scolded Cody.
"Cody! You can't make such accusations without proof. If it's true, then Kevin would be putting Auntie's whole family in jeopardy." Marshall also stood up excitedly, glaring at Kevin as he demanded, "Kevin, is what Cody is saying true? Tell us! You have to answer honestly today. If you really dare do such a thing, I won’t let you go today!"
Marshall's tone was ferocious. Although he seemed to be seeking confirmation, his demeanor appeared as though he had already condemned Kevin as the debtor Cody described.
In Marshall's view, Kevin was exactly that kind of person.
So, Marshall had prematurely decided that Kevin was as Cody described. He believed Kevin must have borrowed a lot of money. Now, Marshall looked as though he was about to punish Kevin and rid the family of a menace physically.
"What? It is impossible! It can't be! It surely isn't true! Kevin is not that kind of person. Kevin, tell the truth. Is it true?" Scarlett was also thrown into panic. Her face went pale, and she trembled as she looked at Kevin with fear in her eyes.
Sofia, too, turned pale with fear. Cody's words did make sense, leading Sofia to entertain the possibility with a heavy heart. This caused her impression of Kevin to plummet instantly. She stared incredulously at Kevin, awaiting his confirmation.
"Kevin?" Lillian trembled, turning to pull Kevin aside firmly while scolding Cody, "Cody, don't talk nonsense! I'm very clear about my son-in-law's affairs; he has earned all his money from his own efforts. Today is my birthday, and we're all happy. I won't hold this against you. But from now on, you are not allowed to speak nonsense again."
After speaking, Lillian pulled Kevin, who was still composed and calm, to the side and, in a hushed tone filled with anxiety, asked, "Kevin, tell me the truth. Is what Cody said true? If it is, don't worry. Just be honest with me. Mom has some savings; I'll help you repay the money. We'll return the watch, too. I know you want to make me happy on my birthday, but we can't continue like this in the future. Promise me, okay? Can you do that? I won't push you to earn money in the future. Just live well with Scarlett, okay?"
Lillian, though outwardly resolute in front of everyone, had turned deathly pale. In her heart, she had started to believe Cody's words, thinking that Kevin had gotten involved in usurious borrowing and put on a brave face to hide the truth.
However, what deeply moved Kevin was that Lillian not only refrained from blaming him but instead fiercely protected him, even willing to use her years of savings to help him repay the debt.
During this time spent together, their bond had grown significantly, and Lillian had truly come to regard Kevin as her own son, treating him as a cherished member of the family from the bottom of her heart.
This sincere display of affection touched Kevin profoundly.
Seeing Lillian's face filled with care and concern and tears nearly welling up in her eyes, Kevin couldn't help but feel his own eyes moisten. His mother-in-law, who had once been so materialistic and vain, now stood ready to defend him with all her savings.
Such emotions were undeniably genuine. Throughout his life, Kevin had never experienced such warmth and familial love.
His biological parents had always favored his brother and showed little interest in him. As a result, Kevin's relationship with them was strained, which partly motivated his decision to marry into the Foster family.
"Mom, you're mistaken. I earned this money myself through hard work, honestly and cleanly! I have never borrowed a single cent, and Cody's accusations are baseless," Kevin reassured, embracing Lillian with care. He guided her back to her seat, calmly smiling as he addressed the situation, "There must be some misunderstanding with Cody. Firstly, I can assure you that I never borrowed any money. Secondly, I can confidently say that all this money was earned through my efforts, honestly and transparently."
